caribbean cruise thomas cook

In 1994 we retired to living on a sailboat...we did so for 8 years, all in the Caribbean.

I first stepped foot on a sailboat in 1989 on a shore excursion in St Thomas, USVI. We spent 4 hours on a 36 foot boat owned by a nice young couple. That evening as we left St Thomas we looked down from the cruise ship on the sailboats bobbing in the harbor and stated." We are going to be sitting in the cockpit of one of those watching the cruise ships leave in 5 years". We did just that in 1995. I was hooked on the sailboat cruising lifestyle.

We started by reading all we could find on cruising...it is a lot different than sailboat racing, which we never did on our boat. We then took some sailing lessons on Clear Lake south of our Houston home.

We next took sailing vacations in the BVI (British Virgin Islands), the best place to go to start sailing. We went with a captain and cook... 6 to 8 passengers to a 50 foot boat... the crew will let you sail and do boat stuff as long as it was safe. They were bombarded by questions by yours truly. We were living on a sailboat...not ours but on a boat.

After a crewed trip from St Lucia to Grenada...we started taking boats out by ourselves, 36 to 40 footers. This is called bare boating. We were green but we absolutely loved it. These trips were a week in duration...hey we were working.

In January 1994, we took a 3 week bareboat trip in the BVI. We did not get bored and we thought...Hey we can do this sailboat thing. We came home and started looking for a boat and planning our escape from working.

In May of 1994 we bought our only boat, a 5 year old 35 foot Island Packet, we named her Shadowtime. From May until November we spent our weekends on the boat at a nice marina in Kemah, Texas. In November 1994 I set out for the Virgin Islands with 2 friends, 1 with offshore experience. Went from Kemah to Key West Florida...from Key West to Marsh Harbor, Bahamas...then Marsh Harbor to Jost Van Dyke in the BVI. The entire trip took 22 days, 18 at sea.

Once in the Virgin Islands, I returned home to Texas for Christmas. My bride quit her job in January and we flew back to the boat. That started an 8 year adventure living inside the songs of  Jimmy Buffett.

That is our short story. See more on my website below.

Does living on a sailboat take a lifetime of having sea salt in your blood? No, we are living proof that anyone with a desire to try this wonderful lifestyle can do so. You can too if you really want to. Enjoy.

I need to cancel my Royal Caribbean cruise which is about 45 days away.?

I got the insurance with my travel agent. How much can I get back at this point? Can I get money back for my deposit and non-refundable flights since I got the insurance?

Contact your travel agent. It depends on the reason you are canceling.

You better do it soon. Sometimes even with insurance there are penalties that can't be recovered from the insurance company.

Good Luck)

Interested in finding a good vacation spot or idea for your family? Choosing a vacation that is safe and fun for children without being boring for adults can be a difficult proposition. Here are five ideas for family travel destinations that will keep children busy and entertained all day while still providing a relaxing or entertaining vacation experience for their parents.

1. Try A Cruise

Many cruise ships offer basic amenities that children will enjoy, but some cruises are designed specifically for providing something for the whole family. A cruise vacation will let your family explore many of the cruise ship's destination, while allowing you to relax and enjoy your vacation without wondering where your kids are going to wander to. Look into the Royal Caribbean Voyager class cruise ships to get something with stuff for the whole family like rock climbing, ice skating, and a wide variety of programs that will encourage children and teens to meet other kids and hang out.

2. Williamsburg, Virginia

If you are trying to work a little bit of education into your vacation plans, Williamsburg is a great place to go to combine historical interest and fun. The area has a colonial recreation that you can take your children through to find out what life in the 1770's was like from actors pretending to live it. Williamsburg also has a great theme park, a water park, and a wide variety of nearby historical sites and museums to keep a family busy for days.

3. Family Oriented U.S. All-Inclusive Resorts

Many areas in the U.S. have all inclusive family resorts that provide activities for children as well as a great vacation experience for adults. Smuggler's Notch in Vermont offers a great mix of outdoor camp style activities for kids and teens that will suit any temperament, as well as childcare for younger kids so adults can get some time to themselves. The Hyatt Regency resort near Scottsdale, Arizona also has a great program for keeping kids entertained while teaching them about the area and culture, as well as a wide variety of great family activities the hotel will arrange to help everybody have a great time.

4. Southern California

The area around L.A. and San Diego offers one of the best sets of family parks and vacation destinations in the country. Popular destinations like Lego Land near San Diego and the movie themed Disneyland and Universal Studios parks in L.A. are some of the great theme parks grouped reasonably close together, and the family has the option of doing something lower key like going to San Diego's Apple Hill or simply visiting the beach when the lure of the parks starts to fade.

5. Caribbean Resorts

It can be difficult to find a good place for children abroad, but with the right research it is quite possible. There are a wide variety of all inclusive family centric resorts in the Caribbean that can keep kids entertained with water sports and fun programs while allowing their parents to enjoy a relaxing vacation on the beach. These resort packages are designed to appeal to all budget levels and vacation ideas, so finding one that will suit your family and your budget shouldn't be hard.

Timeshare presentations are tricky animals. They can either be an excellent method of obtaining expensive vacations for nothing more than a couple of hours of your time or they can turn into pricey burdens on your budget. Depending on your approach, timeshare presentations can either work for you or against you - the trick is making it worth your time.

Many travelers find themselves in a budget situation where they have more time than money. Before you plan your next vacation, seek out timeshare presentations in the area. Often, these companies offer hefty incentives for attending their presentations. These incentives can range from free nights at luxury resorts to expensive electronics or gift certificates. Many families choose to attend these presentations to offset the cost of expensive attractions, such as Walt Disney World theme parks or Universal Studios. Quite often, timeshare companies entice attendants into their presentation with free or deeply discounted attraction tickets. Others choose to take long weekends at luxury resorts, often within driving distance of their homes. When choosing timeshare incentives that deal with free or discounted hotels or resorts, think carefully about your proximity to the property. If the gift is four nights at a Caribbean resort in exchange for sitting through a timeshare presentation and you live in New England, the freebie may not be worth your while. However, evaluate your need or want based on your desired vacation spots. If you are planning a vacation to Hawaii, then the presentation that offers a free weekend in a beach-front hotel may prove quite interesting.

Before you embark on your vacation, search out interesting timeshare presentations that offer incentives appropriate to that area and your interests. Many timeshare companies require reservations or only offer presentations certain on certain days of the week. For this reason, you should contact the company and let them know of your interest in their property and the dates you will be in town to attend the presentation. This is an excellent opportunity to find out exactly what the presentation entails, an estimated time of the presentation, and the details of the incentives. The best way for you to escape unscathed with a positive experience of your timeshare presentation is to know what you're getting before you attend. Be leery of incentives that revolve around sweepstakes or contest entries. The best timeshare presentations to look for are ones that will provide you with something more than a chance to win a prize.

Other people choose to use timeshare presentations as a way to view properties they may be interested in purchasing. Usually, the presentation gives you an in-depth tour of the grounds, amenities, and properties available. Many individuals interested in purchasing a timeshare may wish to attend these presentations as an introduction to different types of properties in the area of interest, and the incentives are perks of the deal. The salesmen will be proficient in their job and may weave a convincing tale. Be warned before you sign any paperwork - these timeshare companies often grossly overcharge for their properties. If you are genuinely interested in purchasing a timeshare, take the time to review the secondary market. Often, timeshares can be purchased from a current owner for thousands of dollars less than buying the same timeshare at the presentation.

The most important way to make sure timeshare presentations are an opportunity instead of a scam is to discuss your options before attending a presentation. If your main reason for sitting through the sales pitch is the incentive at the end of the talk, then keep that in mind. The salesmen are often talented individuals who can convince all who sit through their pitches that the best way to vacation is a timeshare. Far too many people feel pressured into a purchasing a timeshare when they have no need nor budget for a timeshare. If you are interested in purchasing a timeshare, remember the consequences of purchasing from a high-pressure salesman. To find more information about timeshare presentations, just log on to the Internet and visit locations such as http://www.atimesharesz.com/timesharepresentations to do a thorough search. If you conduct the proper research and remember your expectations and budget, you can easily turn a timeshare presentation into an excellent opportunity for budget-friendly vacationing.

How is the Caribbean Beach Resort in Disney?

I am staying at the Caribbean Beach Resort in Disney tomorrow and I am interested in suggestions and reviews.

I absolutely loved staying at the Caribbean Beach. My family and I stayed there the last time we visited Disney, and had a blast. Of all of the moderate resorts, it is my favorite. As everyone else said, it is a bit large, so try to get one of the preferred rooms. It has a pretty good food court, as well as a sit down restaurant. The pool is large, has a slide and waterfall, and is usually pretty crowded. Each section also has a small pool that is usually not as crowded, but if I remember correctly does not have all of the fun stuff with it either. There is a beach to play on, and you can rent the bicycles and water sprite boats to go sailing around the lagoon. You should have a great time when you are not at the parks!

Have a great trip

In 1978, Jamaican dancer/choreographer, L'Antoinette Stines, founded Miami's first, primarily black dance company, L'Acadco. Returning to Jamaica in 1982 she continued to grow with her company and together they have become dynamic ambassadors for Jamaican culture. L'Acadco's mission is to present the rhythms of the Caribbean people on the world stage.

Next week, L'Acadco - A United Caribbean Dance Force has a diverse membership which includes dancers, drummers, stilt walkers, and fire blowers from across the Caribbean. week L'Acadco will be hosting PASSION:fruits, a celebration of timeless L'Acadco works. This show will be held at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, U.W.I Mona from Thursday April 30th 2009 to Saturday March 2nd 2009.

We talk to the company founder and artistic director L'Antoinette Stines...

YE: Why are you an artist/dancer and when did you first become one?

L'Antoinette: I regard myself as both having danced with many dance companies. I am a choreographer, creator of L'Antech the first Anglo Caribbean Modern Contemporary Technique and I sometimes perform with the company, so I guess I am an artist.

YE: How would you describe your work?

L'Antoinette: Innovative and eclectic, an exciting blend of Jamaica, Caribbean and Europe which is the reality of Caribbean culture.

YE: What type of dance do you do?

L'Antoinette: Jazz, classical ballet, traditional, contemporary and African dance.

YE: How did L'Acadco get started and what was your vision for the company?

L'Antoinette: L'Acadco had two beginnings. The first was in Miami, Florida. The vision was to bring together the tri-ethnic communities of Spanish, African-American and Caucasian. The second was in Jamaica with a totally different intention to present contemporary dance with a new voice, fresh and valid interpretations of the Jamaican landscape.

YE: What artists/dancers have influenced you and how?

L'Antoinette: The Cuban Contemporanea and Eduardo Rivero have had the most impact on my artistic identity today. Through their work I came to realize that we can perform contemporary dance remembering who we are as a people so that when the curtain opens there is no confusion that we are Jamaican.

YE: What other interests do you have outside of dance?

L'Antoinette: I am an avid reader as a PhD candidate at the University of the West Indies in Cultural Studies. My interest is doing intense research on the cultures of people especially the Caribbean.

YE: What inspires you to keep motivated when things get tough?

L'Antoinette: I am inspired by the Divine Energy of the Universe the "Godhead" as I strongly believe we are given our talents to reach people and to testify about being given that talent. Not using it is abusing it.

YE: How would people who know you describe you?

L'Antoinette: I am told that I should give up dance and become a comedian. Some would say I am intense, others would say I am fun loving and others might say she is a "Hitler" when it come to discipline and hard work.

YE: Who are some dance companies and or dancers that you admire?

L'Antoinette: I admire Phoenix dance company in Liverpool, Alvin Ailey Company, The Cuban Contemporanea, The Eduardo Rivero Caribbean Dance Company, Kariamu Welsh -Tradition.

I love many dancers it is difficult to name them. I always however admired and still believe that Jamaica's divas are Patsy Rickets and Barry Moncrieffe.

YE: What have been your greatest challenges? Rewards?

L'Antoinette: My greatest challenge is my greatest reward and that is bringing up my children to be successful, functional citizens. My first son graduated from NYU with a Bachelors degree, did his four years in the U.S Army and received many accolades and will graduate from law school in December. My second son Aaron Vereen graduated from Noyam Institute in Ghana Africa as a master drummer, dancer and now performs with Roots Underground and teaches children and adults and is the musical director of L'Acadco and my daughter is now about to sit her CSC exams and is a Senior dancer in L'Acadco. They are my challenges and my successes.

YE: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

L'Antoinette: I intend to travel the world and teach about the rich culture of Jamaica as an ambassador. This is why I have pursued a PhD.

YE: How would you describe the state of the dance world in Jamaica?

L'Antoinette: Rich, vibrant. This is the dance capitol of the Caribbean in competition with New York. There are many dance companies, junior companies, kids who dance for JCDC festival competition. Dance, however needs to be funded by government.

YE: Tell us about the season this year...what can we expect?

L'Antoinette: L'Acadco has brought to the stage memories of the 25 years. Three of the dances HIGH, SATTA AND HAVE YOU EVER BEEN THERE? were staged 25 years ago. The others Divine Unity had it's world premier in Canada to rave reviews. New choreography just for this celebration are Step by Step, Killing me Softly and Passion.

Exciting guest choreographers are Barbara Ramos-Caballero- Lead dancer for the Eduardo Rivero Company Santiago Cuba, Onaje Bell known for his interesting jazz and hip hop flavour, Arsenio Andrade from Havana, Cuba who is known as a principal dancer with the NDTC and Kysha Patterson, a young choreographer whose cutting edge choreography audiences find very exciting.

Our guest dancers are the real divas of dancehall, Mad Michell, Borisha, Pinky, Donagaona and more.

caribbean resort florida keys

caribbean resort florida keys

There's really something unique about the Florida Keys. Visit once and you'll know there's a reason Ernest Hemingway lived in the Keys.

The Keys are an incredible place to spend some time if you want to hit the beach but you don't want to deal with huge tourist crowds. They're also a wonderful place if you want to spend some time at gorgeous old bars and inns, without having to worry about getting a headache from the legions of noisy weekend revellers.

In terms of culture and climate, it's somewhere between a charming, rustic American town, and the relaxing, scenic appeal of a beach resort destination in the Caribbean.

Sounds like a great place, doesn't it? For adults, anyway.

It's not exactly Disneyland, but fear not! You can totally take a trip to the Florida keys without boring your kids to tears. The Keys are definitely a laid back part of the country, but really, a lot of the attractions strike a perfect balance between relaxing and fun. You won't get bored, but you won't get a headache, either.

So here are just a few of the cool things you can do in the Keys without boring your kids half to death.

Mallory Square

Something of a Key West tradition: At dusk every day, visitors and locals alike gather at the seaside Mallory Square to watch the breathtaking sunset and enjoy the entertainment of street performers. The beauty of nature, some entertainment, and nobody walking around with a giant Mickey Mouse head on their shoulders.

Charters

There are a lot of charter tours in the Keys, in fact, far too many to ever list here. You can take Danger Charters and take a look at the sharks and wildlife of the area, or you can take Easy Day charters for fishing, snorkeling, and even, hopefully, some dolphin sightings.

Hemingway Home and Museum

Your kids might not be so into The Old Man and the Sea just yet, but you can go to appreciate all the stories and artifacts that really bring literary history to life, and your kids can enjoy the six-toed cats, descended directly from the cats owned by Hemingway himself.

When your kid is asking for Six Flags and you tell him that you're going to some place in Florida he's never heard of, he probably won't be too thrilled at first, but rest assured, the Keys really are a great place to take your whole family. You get the laid back atmosphere of a real grown up vacation, but with a degree of entertainment and excitement that the kids will love.

Taking a cruise vacation is fun and their are ways of making it even more enjoyable with a bit of preparation and knowledge. Before booking your cruise their are things that you should know.

Are you going on a family vacation, a couples cruise or a singles cruise? Depending on the answer to this question, the type of cruise and cruise line that you choose will differ.

Families who do not gamble should seriously consider the Disney line. There are tons of things for the kids to do and there is a whole area for adults as well, as well as a spa area for relaxation. Every person that I talk to that took one of their cruises has said that their kids begged to be allowed to stay in the kids area. They were just having way too much fun to want to leave for even a minute.

There are also a ton of things to do together, like the Broadway style shows, amazing meals and on shore excursions.

Now if you are going on a family vacation and the adults want to gamble, try a Royal Caribbean Cruise. There is a kids area, as well as a kiddie pool but there is also a casino for the adults. On top of that you have excursions, as well, onboard shows, a spa, tons of activities and outstanding cuisine.

If you are more into the singles or even couples scene and you like to party a bit, go with Carnival cruise lines. They are typically less expensive and have a party atmosphere. You can lounge by the pool, dance in their clubs and mingle to your heart's content with hundreds of like minded individuals.

If upscale and quiet is more your speed go for the Princess Cruise line. In our opinion this is the least kid friendly. The kiddie pool on the two cruises that we went on began at 6 feet. This is a slightly older crowd that is being catered to. There are several amazing restaurants onboard like Sabatinis where for an extra $25 you get unlimited courses. There are pasta dishes, lobster, steaks, incredible desserts and more and you can have as many portions as you like. If you want to pamper yourself there is an onboard spa and an oasis which you can pay a small fee to reserve. Children are not allowed in this area and it is dedicated to peace and quiet. You can lounge by the pool certain that you will not be disturbed. Or you can go to one of the other pools and actually mingle and meet people.

All of these cruises offer treats like movie nights by the pool, snack bars throughout the ship, buffets, free classes, paid classes, spas, different dining plans depending on whether you want to eat with the same people night after night or if you prefer your own table and dining schedule. They all also offer onboard shows, art auctions, on shore excursions and more. Many even own or rent their own private island for you to enjoy.

Your first cruise vacation will amaze you and you will have fun. The only word of caution is to buy some Dramamine before hand just in case you hit slightly bumpy waters. It should help you feel great and enjoy your trip even more.

what is the best place to take a family vacation in the Caribbean(kids 12 and 14)?

looking for a safe- fun, beautiful beach, nice people vacation

I, my wife and three kids (16, 11 & 11) have been vacationing in Jamaica every year since May 2000. We fell in love with this beautiful tropical island from the first time we set foot there and decided that would be our annual vacation spot. I have conferred with friends and colleagues who have traveled to other Caribbean islands and they admit that Jamaica was the best of them all. Yes there is poverty in some areas but for the most places you go the scenery is so lush and pretty and the people are extremely nice and welcoming.

I have traveled in Kingston, Portland, Ocho Rios, Montego Bay and Negril and the best place we found to stay was Point Village in Negril. It boasts the most picturesque sunset and it is a great family resort. Another suggestion is FDR Pebbles in Trelawny which is another family resort with ample teen activities.

Both resorts are beachfront properties with Point Village having a slight bigger beach and it is also right next to the seven-mile beach stretch.

Holiday Inn in Montego Bay is also a great family resort that I stayed at and if you are not big on the bus transfers then this is the ideal spot with about a fifteen minutes ride from the airport. FDR Pebbles is about forty minutes from the airport and Point Village is about an hour and fifteen minutes (used to be two hours but there is a new wider road now).

Check it out and give me a feedback if you do go!

Have a nice family trip.. :-D

Punta Cana's airport is not only a welcoming structure to visitors arriving on the island, but also an environmentally-friendly building that gives back to the island's environment.

As the flight reaches the Dominican Republic, one cannot miss the thatched roof and the open air design of the Punta Cana International Airport. The airport was designed to both welcome visitors, and be environmentally responsible, using native design and materials.

There is a modern new air-conditioned terminal for passenger arrivals.

Upon arriving at the Punta Cana airport, each passenger is required to purchase a $10.00 tourist card before entering customs. After retrieving luggage and clearing customs, passengers are usually greeted by their tour company representative and directed to board the correct bus for transfer to their resort. The Department of Migration photographs United States citizens who enter the Dominican Republic with birth certificates and photo identification. This will not affect United States citizens who travel using their passports. This is being done to prevent illegal entry back into the United States. The computerized systems are in place at each of the international air and maritime ports. However, visitors in general are advised to confirm travel documentation with the nearest Dominican Republic Consulate.

There are direct flights to Punta Cana from a number of major cities throughout the world, including New York, Miami, Philadelphia, Paris, and Buenos Aries. There are direct flights from the following airports in the United States:

-Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport

-Charlotte

-Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airpor

-Manchester

-Miami International Airport

-New York John F. Kennedy International Airport

-Newark Liberty International Airport

-Orlando Sanford International Airport

-Philadelphia International Airport

-St. Louis Lambert International Airport

US Airways operates non-stop round-trip flights from Philadelphia every Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. The flight duration is around five hours. Other airlines like Continental also operate flights to Punta Cana. Flights from New York take around 3 hours and 15 min while flights from Miami take less than 2 hours. There are daily flights from Punta Cana to several domestic and regional Caribbean airports. Most hotels are within 30 minutes of the airport. Airlines can be contacted at their toll free numbers for updated flight times. While at Punta Cana, visitors can find more information regarding their travel from the Ministry of Tourism.

Anyone looking for romance on their honeymoon should consider a Caribbean Honeymoon Cruise. There are many possibilities to choose from, but we will discuss just two possibilities. Once you get aboard the larger cruise ships you will be amazed at how much there is to do to keep you busy on your Caribbean honeymoon cruise.

Some larger liners offer passengers a rock wall to climb about on, fitness trainers to work out with, pools to swim in, or masseuses to rub away the tensions that you and your significant other accumulated during the months prior the wedding ceremony. Dancing and small casino style rooms are often available to cruise passengers as well, with supervised activities for children available for those that are taking their second honeymoon.

Many luxurious cruise lines even offer LED movie screens. You can watch movies under the starts in a theatre style setting. Other great attractions on board are golf simulators and ice skating rinks! Almost all ships will stop to give you time for snorkeling and don't forget a favorite activity during any Caribbean honeymoon cruise: swimming with dolphins!

The ocean, ship deck and cabins won't be the only places you'll see on your Caribbean honeymoon cruise either. Most ships will drop anchor more than once along the course of the cruise, giving you opportunities to snorkel with tropical fish in the warm azure waters, go mountain biking along trails in Costa Rica's rain forests, or horseback riding along the sparkling white sandy beaches.

With shows, catered meals, dancing and pool-side fun and games available at almost any hour a Caribbean honeymoon cruise aboard a large liner could leave you wanting little more than extra time out at sea. Some ships even boast multiple clubs and lounges so you'll be sure to find at least one playing your kind of music where you and your sweetheart can chill out with a tropical drink during one of at least two different cruise tours.

Eastern Caribbean honeymoon cruise tours can sail by Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas, while Western Caribbean honeymoon cruise tours can include trips by Cozumel Island, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica to name just a few ports of call. Truly it would take more than seven days on any given cruise just to take in all the opportunities for excitement and relaxation.

Small Chartered Cruises

For the newlyweds, or second honeymooners, looking for a Caribbean honeymoon cruise with a more personal touch there are smaller boats available for charter where you and your sweetheart will be the only passengers aboard. Imagine cruising the caribbean on a private yacht? Can you imagine a more romantic honeymoon vacation? This just might be the perfect ticket for an unforgettable caribbean honeymoon cruise.

Since the Grenadines are split between two different countries you can usually expect your ship to be flying one of two flags at any given time. At Bequia, Canouan, Mayereau, Mustique, Petit St Vincent and Union you can expect the St. Vincent flag to be flying overhead, while the Grenada flag is required at Carriacou and Petite Martinique. There should be little need for you to worry about such technicalities, however, as the crew will be taking care of the details while you enjoy the calm blue waters and distant sands during your Caribbean honeymoon cruise.
