What's the best island in the Caribbean to visit?

My husband and another couple really want to take a vacation to the Caribbean but have no clue which island to visit. Neither of us has kids. We would really like to avoid areas with high crime rates. Any suggestions would be helpful.

For a romantic and peaceful friends vacation, try St. Barts island : many beautiful beaches, good restaurants very secure nightlife. We stayed my wife and two other couples in Anse des Cayes area in front of Chevreau and Fregate Islands, in a virgin spot 5mn drive from St Jean's bay and Gustavia for nightlife, shops and restaurants. If you want to check some pic from Anse des Cayes sea view : http://www.stbartsluxuryvilla.com/amazing-seaview-from-the-hill-of-anse-des-cayes-st-barts/

Visiting Kilauea Volcano is one of the most scintillating and thrilling experience which remains in the memory for a long long to come. This very active volcano is located 30 miles southwest of Hilo and the opportunity of witnessing the primal process of creation and destruction make this place a major tourist attraction.

The volcano is part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and is considered a very sacred place by the native Hawaiians and is considered to be the abode of Goddess Pele.

The park was founded in 1916 and encompasses 333,000 acres from the summit to the sea. It is a live proof of hundreds and thousands of years of volcanic activity, migration and evolution; processes that have converted a bare land from the sea into a haven for various complex and unique ecosystems as well as distinct Ancient Hawaiian culture.

In the park, Kilauea is the most active and Mauna Loa the most massive lava erupting beauties.

Climatic Condition & Weather System:

Given the fact the park is home to lava erupting mountains, it is very easy to presume that the weather at such a place must be surely very hot and sultry. But the most wonderful and unique feature of this place is that even though the island weather is unpredictable yet the weather conditions at the summit are varying. The local weather at Kilauea's summit which is 4000 feet in altitude varies daily. It may sometimes be rainy and chilly and the temperature also varies according to the elevation. The summit remains 12-15 degrees cooler than the sea level. The coastal plain at the end of Chain of Craters Road where the lava meets the sea is often hot, dry and windy with the possibility of passing showers.

Park Attractions:

The main attractions in the park are the eruptive sites that include the main caldera of Kilauea and a more active but remote vent known as the Puu Oo. The entry to the park is from the Hawaii Belt Road. The Chain of Craters is self-explanatory and leads past several craters from historic eruptions to the coast. It used to continue towards another entry point near the town of Kalapana but now it is covered by a lava flow.

Kilauea Volcano:

This volcano is sometimes also called "The World's Only Drive-in Volcano." On an average, 250,000-650,000 cubic yards of lava per day is produced here which is enough to resurface the 20-mile long, 2-lane road daily. The most beautiful aspect of this volcano is the meeting of the lava with the sea. One can only imagine this wondrous scene.

Outbound Activities in the National Park:

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers endless opportunities for great adventures in the Park. Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities. One can find 150 miles of hiking trails through volcanic craters, scalded deserts, and rain forests. Apart from this, the national park also features a museum, petroglyphs, a walk-in lava tube and most importantly two very much live fire erupting volcanoes; Maunaloa, which last erupted in 1984 and Kilauea which has been erupting since January 3rd, 1983.

International Recognition:

The park is rich in bio-diversity and the very uniqueness of this diversity has earned the park the proud position of the World Biosphere site; named as such by the UNESCO in 1980 and then in 1987 it was recognized as a World Heritage Site.

Thassos is an exotic Greek island in the Aegean Sea and it is situated a few kilometers away from the continent, 20 kilometers southeast from Kavala. If you travel from the nearest, to the island link (Keramoti) it will be a cheap and quick ferry travel around 30 minutes. The season in Thassos is nearly 2 months shorter than the one in Keramoti - from the second half of May to the first half of September. During the peak of the season (July and August) there are sometimes cool winds and rains because the island is completely surrounded by water. There are many hotel houses you can rent.

The ancient Greek legend tells us that this place is one of the most erotic adventures of Zeus. The Phoenician king Aginor had three sons: Phoenix, Siliks and Cadmus and one daughter called Europa. One summer day, Zeus transformed into a bull and took away Europa to a cave in the island Crete. After the act, three sons were born - Minos, the famous king of Crete, Radamantos, the wise lawmaker and Sarpidon, the first king of ancient Litsiya. While hidden in the island of Crete, Europa was enjoying the caress of Zeus, her father Aginor sent his three sons and his only grandson Thassos to find Europa and told them to search until they find her. All head in different directions - Phoenix head south, Siliks head north, Cadmus searched over the islands. But even the advices of the famous oracle of Delphi didn't help them to find Europa. After searching in many places the young Thassos arrived on the island and charmed by the greenery and the nice climate, he decided to stay here and that how the island got its name.

Another legend tells us that this remarkable place was once home of beautiful creatures, half women half fish called sirens. Those mermaids were singing beautiful songs and thus casting a spell on the passing by sailors. And due to this legend Thassos is the place where the sirens tried to divert Ulysses from his path.

When you travel around the island you will see the many olive trees, the endless pine tree forests, various beautiful pictures where the green trees are mixing with the blue water. But there is some shortage of long beach - you can enjoy the many small ones. But when you travel around Thassos you will find the many remarkable bays which are sometimes hard to reach. It seems that, these hidden positions, has kept them natural and beautiful, because the bus with tourist can hardly reach these spots.

If you are looking for peaceful vacation on some exotic place, then the island of Thassos can offer you just what you want. It is a remarkable place surrounded by water, with nice climate and still preserved the magic from the ancient times. You won't be disappointed if you visit this wonderful place in Greece.

Best digital camera?

Hello,

I am looking for a good camera with professional results. I will be taking pictures in the Caribbean on a regular basis so it has to be great with landscapes and zooming. I will also be traveling in England and will be taking both landscape and close up pictures (people). I would also like to have one that keeps dust off the lens (vibrates) effectively because I will be spending a month in desert areas of Africa.

I know this is a lot of information but I really need this camera a soon as possible. As for the weigh, It does not really matter and my budget goes up to 1200$ CAN.

Thanks a lot!

If you're looking for professional results and weight isn't a concern, your best bet will be a decent lens on a consumer digital SLR camera. I mention the lens first because the quality of your shots will be determined by the glass in front of the camera, not the camera itself. For the most part, all DSLR's on the market from all the major camera manufacturers are going to take professional quality pictures if a good photographer is using good glass with them. When searching for a lens, a great website to check out is www.slrgear.com. Find the lens(es) that would suit you in both price and quality, and then choose a camera to go with it. I very very rarely used zoom lenses, I normally go with fixed focal lens (no zooming) for their quality, but I can attest to the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 as being a high quality piece of glass.

As for the camera, the consumer-level offerings of Canon (400D/450D), Nikon (D80), Olympus (E-510), and Pentax (K10D/K20D) will all be great choices. Canon and Nikon will be more readily available because these are the two biggest camera manufacturers. These are most often the systems used by professionals because of the huge selection of lenses and accessories available. Both Olympus and Pentax offer the most camera for your buck, but that's countered with the fact that you may have issues finding professional lenses to go with your camera if you ever decide to get into more specialized niches. One thing I do have to say for the Pentax K10D and K20D is that both have excellent weather sealing against dust and water, which sounds like that could be useful in your travels to distant lands. This weather sealing is available for other cameras, but the Canon and Nikon equivalents will cost more than your budget for just the camera. A great website that I always use for reviews on camera bodies is www.dpreview.com

Egypt has long been a country heavily dependent on tourism - a fact that is as much due to its great weather as the astounding and wondrous architecture of The Pyramids. Yet, over the past year the country has seen something of a resurgence on an international scale as the recession has caused many holidaymakers to avoid the Eurozone to get the most from their foreign exchange.

Data published from a recent Mastercard poll (at chroniclelive.co.uk) shows that Egypt came out tops among Mastercard users from across the Asia-Pacific, Middle East and Africa - and posited the notion that developing resorts such as Sharm el-Sheikh are also fuelling its popularity as a destination for cheap holidays. So what does Sharm el-Sheikh have going for it?

Sharm el-Sheikh is a city of more than 800,000 inhabitants on the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula around 80 miles south of Mount Sinai. Since the early 80s the city has been subject to formidable, but well controlled developments in order to maximise its capabilities as a tourist area whilst not harming the natural surroundings. In September and October the average high temperatures peak at around 36 degrees Celsius.

The city sits on the Red Sea coast and boasts a famously rich underwater ecosystem. There are more than a thousand different species of fish evident in the Red Sea, as well as over 1,000 miles of coral reef to be explored. Subsequently, alongside scuba diving, Sharm el-Sheikh is home to a host of other water sports, including wind surfing, canoeing and sailing.

Sharm el-Sheik, and a number of other resort areas such as the Sinai's Nuweiba, as well as El Gouna and Soma Bay on the East Egyptian coast, are collectively known as the Red Sea Riveira. This ensures that each of the areas, much of which is National Park land, is subject to a number of laws to ensure marine life and the surrounding desert is protected and not poorly managed.

Aside from all the city has to offer, Sharm el-Sheikh is also in close proximity to Mount Sinai - a mountain of great geological and religious significance for tourists. The mountain itself is 2,285 metres tall and is situated by the highest peak on the Sinai peninsula, Mount St. Catherine. Its religious history is evident with the Monastery of St. Catherine, and both a mosque and Greek Orthodox chapel can be found at the mountain's summit.

If you're planning a vacation in Barbados you may as well go all out and plan a luxury Barbados vacation. After all you're going to the tropics, so why not get the whole experience and take the Caribbean vacation of your dreams.

Chances are you don't get down to Barbados very often, so when you do go make sure you have everything planned out accordingly so you can maximize your luxury and enjoy your stay. No one wants vacation regrets, so put in the time necessary to ensure a great trip.

For starters a key element of a luxury Barbados vacation is staying at a luxury hotel. If you're looking for luxury this is not the time to cheap out and by staying in a guesthouse.

Now, you don't necessarily need to get the super deluxe suite to have a luxurious vacation; but you do need a nice hotel room. Obviously if you can afford it oceanview is best and will offer you the most relaxing of experiences. There is nothing quite like waking up in the morning to the bright tropical sunshine and opening your room doors out onto a beautiful balcony that overlooks the waters of the Caribbean Sea. Indeed, if you can do nothing else to ensure a luxurious time you should try your best to get a beachfront hotel room.

Great dining is also a key to a luxury Barbados vacation. You're in the tropics, don't eat at chain restaurants like Chefette. Instead spend your time and money at places that offer uniquely regional food prepared well by expert chefs, such as Champers and The Cliff.

For the ideal experience you will probably want to enjoy a combination of both fine dining and local dining. After all you're not going to get the complete experience of Barbados by only sticking to fine dining establishments. Feel free to switch it up a little bit and dine with the locals every once in a while. One of the best and easiest ways to experience this is by just spending a Friday night at The Oistins Fish Fry.

To round out your luxury Barbados vacation you may wish to consider the mode of transportation you'll be using to get there. Although we would all love to take our own private jet to the Caribbean, if you can afford a first-class airline ticket then you're all set for luxury. If you find first-class airline tickets to be cost prohibitive, especially on top of the cost of the beachside hotel room, you may wish to consider taking a cruise to Barbados instead. This isn't always cheaper than a first-class ticket however you'll get to explore an entirely new dimension of luxury as you will spend time on a cruise ship as well as explore the island.

At the end of the day Barbados is in and of itself a luxurious location, so planning a luxury Barbados vacation shouldn't be too much of a problem. What really matters is that you get into the spirit of planning a vacation that is perfectly suited to your unique likes and dislikes and from there include luxury where ever you can. Even if you don't have a lot of money affordable luxury is something that everyone can aspire to, and vacationing in Barbados you will find many opportunities to explore this concept and make your vacation truly luxurious.

The magnificent twin ships from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, are about as similar as two ships can be! Same length, same breadth, same tonnage, amazing public spaces including seven distinct neighborhoods, heavenly staterooms and soothing spas. Yet there are certain areas in which these twins show their individuality, namely in some new shopping and dining venues.

One of the outstanding changes is the addition of a Brazilian-style steakhouse called Samba Grill on the Allure of the Seas. By day the area is a cafe in the adult only solarium. By night, the Solarium is transformed into a true churrascari with both indoor and outdoor seating, authentic Brazilian meats and seafood offerings carved table side, as well as lively music and specialty drinks. There is also a buffet with soups, appetizers and salad. The charge is $25 pp to eat at Samba Grill, and this does not include any beverages or alcoholic drinks.

Replacing the Seafood Shack from the Oasis, the Allure offers Rita's Cantina, a vibrant new Mexican restaurant in the Boardwalk neighborhood. The offerings include ceviche, chips with salsa and guacamole, as well as fajitas, tacos and flautas, a veritable fiesta on the Allure of the Seas. Let's not forget the margaritas. There's a selection of more than 15 different flavors to choose from, of course these have to be purchased separately. The charge to dine is $7.95 per person, and you can order as much as you'd like. Rita's also offers evenings of Latin delights with live guitar music, dancing and delightful libations. At least once per 7 day cruise, Rita's will have a Fiesta package available. For $20 pp you get 3 margaritas, tastings of various foods, party gifts and live entertainment.

Not to be outdone by the south of the border crowd, the Boardwalk area will also sport a new snack bar called the Boardwalk Dog House. It's pretty obvious what this venue will have to offer, but you get more than a variety of hot dogs including the ever popular Coney Island dog. Also available are brats, sausages and lots of toppings. This Dog House will occupy the space held by the Donut Shop on the Oasis of the Sea, but fear not, the Donut Shop has not been displaced, just relocated next to the Ice Cream Parlor right across the way.

Also unique to the Allure of the Seas are several venues that are a first on any cruise ship. Enjoy Starbucks at sea open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, shop at the new Guess store selling accessories including watches, belts and purses or shop for paintings and sculptures at the Romeo Britto store.

The Oasis of the Seas offers their rendition of the Broadway play, Hairspray. The Allure of the Seas cast performs the musical Chicago. The ice shows are different, with the Allure using the cast of the film How to Train Your Dragon. Comedy club, jazz and piano bars, a sports bar and various lounges can be found on both ships.

The Allure of the Seas was also the first RCI ship to feature a 3D movie screen at sea. The picture quality and sound are excellent. Various movies are shown during a 7 day cruise. Sorry folks, no popcorn but you can go grab a slice of pizza or cookies on Deck 5 before heading over to the movie. For the best view, enter through deck 4.

Last but not least, the Allure of the Seas was the first ship to feature characters from various DreamWorks movies including Shrek, KungFu Panda and Madagascar. Characters participate in a sail away party, parades and are available for pictures and a character breakfast as well. Dreamworks characters will also be featured on the Oasis of the Seas beginning in April 2011.

So much to do, so little time! You'll never find so many outstanding dining, snacking, noshing, nibbling, grazing and feasting experiences as you will on the Allure of the Seas, unless you're sailing with her twin, the Oasis of the Seas.

Where should I go on my honeymoon?

I will be leaving on Sept. 14 or 15 from Louisville, KY. I want to take a two week, international vacation for less than $5,000 including air, accommodations and most of the rest. I don't want to go to the Caribbean or Mexico--spending 2 weeks on the beach sounds far too boring. Western Europe is out as well, I've traveled most of Western Europe before and my fiance wants to go somewhere that is new to both of us. I want adventure travel, not deluxe travel. Anything is an option--Peru, Thailand, Morocco, Croatia, etc. Where should I go? Any links to particular trip options or vacation packages will be greatly appreciated.
Repeat: Western Europe is not being considered.

South Africa is amazing!!!! Especially along the Cape (Western Cape/ Garden Route)! Not only is it gorgeous, but there is so much too do! Especially if you're into adventure! The highest bungy jump is there, cage diving with sharks, etc. Not sure of packages from the US, but it should be cheap, as the South African Rand is not very strong!!! Good luck!!!!! Enjoy!

Taking a winter cruise can be a fun adventure for college students on break. This is a good time to get away from cold, snowy weather and thaw out with time in the warm sun. A cruise can not only be the answer to a much-needed vacation, but a chance to experience other cultures. A college cruise with friends is a chance to visit several ports of call, make new friends and become closer with travel mates. Winter destinations include Mexico and the many Caribbean islands.

Mexican Riviera

For those on the Pacific Coast, try a cruise from Los Angeles, California down the coast to Mexico. Several cities are stretched along the coast in what has been dubbed the Mexican Riviera for its popularity among cruisers and tourists. Twenty cities and lagoons steeped in tradition and filled with celebrations make up this region known for its beautiful beaches, with a backdrop of cliffs, caves and rugged jungle-like terrain. Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas are three popular ports of call.

Western Caribbean

For those at school in the chilly Northeast, the Western Caribbean Islands make for a relaxing and enchanting vacation. Week-long cruises in the warm, tropical climate of the Cayman Islands or the Bahamas, with perhaps a stop in Cozumel, Mexico, will make frost, snow and school books seem a world away. There is plenty of fresh sea air, lots of entertainment, fine food and beverages, and a festive atmosphere on board the cruise ships. When stopping in port, travelers can enjoy the sights of palm trees and beautiful beaches. Guests can dine locally or go shopping while experiencing the Caribbean culture.

Eastern Caribbean

Winter break from classes means returning from trip with a sun-baked tan and a sunny disposition. With many islands to choose from, the Eastern Caribbean is a popular choice for a college student cruise. Ships leave from a number of different ports in the Southeastern United States that are easily accessible by plane or by road trip. One fun way to start off vacation is a visit to southern cities of Charleston, South Carolina; Mobile Alabama; or a number of ports in Florida where the cruise will begin. Depending on the cruise line, sailing dates and traveler's preference, the possibilities for Eastern Caribbean ports of call are many. They include St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles; Guadeloupe; Barbados; Fort-de-France, Martinique; St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands; and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Following an article I wrote on learning to sail with a spinnaker, I thought it may be worth introducing to the beginner and sailors that have not had the pleasure of using a spinnaker chute.

Designed in America for the Flying Dutchman class it has proven it worth in many sailing races that allow the use of a spinnaker chute. Its is fast to hoist and lowering the spinnaker so in a race with light airs it can be a major benefit on time when hoisting around the mark.

All sailing yachts are different in size therefore each spinnaker chute can be slightly different in setting, but generally the basic setup is as follows.

This description given is when the spinnaker is hoisted, if you can imagine a continuous loop from the spinnaker halyard to a mid point connection on the front side of the spinnaker sail, for a down haul connection. The down haul leads down to the spinnaker chute and then horizontal to the stern of the yacht on exiting the spinnaker chute to the stern there is a free board length that allows for pulling on the down haul rope. At the end of this is a roller block returning the down haul forwards, which in turn becomes the spinnaker halyard, going horizontally forward through a jammer to the mast base and then up the mast and connecting to the spinnaker sail head swivel.

The function to lower the spinnaker is to on skippers instruction; un-jam the spinnaker halyard and release the spinnaker sheets in a controlled manner, then pulling in on the down haul which will allow the spinnaker to collapse down into the spinnaker chute until fully stowed and jammed off.

To hoist the spinnaker un-jam the halyard and hoist the spinnaker at the same time pulling in on the spinnaker sheets and allowing the spinnaker to fill with wind, jam off the halyard and adjust the spinnaker sheets for optimum sailing.

If your sailing yacht has a jib furling system it is advantages to furl the jib away when learning to use the spinnaker, enabling the crew to concentrate on the spinnaker, especially when sailing a yacht with a large overlapping Genoa.

Spinnaker Stowage

Provisions should be made to stow the spinnaker to either port or starboard sides of the yacht. The spinnaker should be stowed clear of the floor of the yacht and kept as dry as possible. When initially fitting a spinnaker chute to a yacht is should firstly be positioned for free running of the spinnaker when hoisting and lowering, not applying extra load on the spinnaker in this operation. Then the deck fittings should be positioned and fixed in the correct places bearing in mind the crew's position in the yacht. Care should be taken to reduce the friction in the sheeting system and the use of large diameter blocks is preferred. Bulls- eye deck fitting should be used where you have long runs of sheet to lift the sheet clear of the deck, especially when the sheets are wet.

Training

After practice, it will be obvious that certain timings of the hoisting and lowering of the spinnaker can be considerably reduced and the crew becoming more efficient.

After initial training, each crew can develop their own version of these systems which will differ from yacht to yacht, but basically improve sailing technique and hopefully help win the race!
