What's the best island in the Caribbean to visit?

My husband and another couple really want to take a vacation to the Caribbean but have no clue which island to visit. Neither of us has kids. We would really like to avoid areas with high crime rates. Any suggestions would be helpful.

For a romantic and peaceful friends vacation, try St. Barts island : many beautiful beaches, good restaurants very secure nightlife. Visiting Kilauea Volcano is one of the most scintillating and thrilling experience which remains in the memory for a long long to come. This very active volcano is located 30 miles southwest of Hilo and the opportunity of witnessing the primal process of creation and destruction make this place a major tourist attraction.

The volcano is part of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and is considered a very sacred place by the native Hawaiians and is considered to be the abode of Goddess Pele.

The park was founded in 1916 and encompasses 333,000 acres from the summit to the sea. It is a live proof of hundreds and thousands of years of volcanic activity, migration and evolution; processes that have converted a bare land from the sea into a haven for various complex and unique ecosystems as well as distinct Ancient Hawaiian culture.

In the park, Kilauea is the most active and Mauna Loa the most massive lava erupting beauties.

Climatic Condition & Weather System:

Given the fact the park is home to lava erupting mountains, it is very easy to presume that the weather at such a place must be surely very hot and sultry. But the most wonderful and unique feature of this place is that even though the island weather is unpredictable yet the weather conditions at the summit are varying. The local weather at Kilauea's summit which is 4000 feet in altitude varies daily. It may sometimes be rainy and chilly and the temperature also varies according to the elevation. The summit remains 12-15 degrees cooler than the sea level. The coastal plain at the end of Chain of Craters Road where the lava meets the sea is often hot, dry and windy with the possibility of passing showers.

Park Attractions:

The main attractions in the park are the eruptive sites that include the main caldera of Kilauea and a more active but remote vent known as the Puu Oo. The entry to the park is from the Hawaii Belt Road. The Chain of Craters is self-explanatory and leads past several craters from historic eruptions to the coast. It used to continue towards another entry point near the town of Kalapana but now it is covered by a lava flow.

Kilauea Volcano:

This volcano is sometimes also called "The World's Only Drive-in Volcano." On an average, 250,000-650,000 cubic yards of lava per day is produced here which is enough to resurface the 20-mile long, 2-lane road daily. The most beautiful aspect of this volcano is the meeting of the lava with the sea. One can only imagine this wondrous scene.

Outbound Activities in the National Park:

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers endless opportunities for great adventures in the Park. Over half of the park is designated wilderness and provides unusual hiking and camping opportunities. One can find 150 miles of hiking trails through volcanic craters, scalded deserts, and rain forests. Apart from this, the national park also features a museum, petroglyphs, a walk-in lava tube and most importantly two very much live fire erupting volcanoes; Maunaloa, which last erupted in 1984 and Kilauea which has been erupting since January 3rd, 1983.

International Recognition:

The park is rich in bio-diversity and the very uniqueness of this diversity has earned the park the proud position of the World Biosphere site; named as such by the UNESCO in 1980 and then in 1987 it was recognized as a World Heritage Site.

Cruise companies are currently marketing their cruise activities gradually for the upcoming winter season, but it does not mean those plans are fixed. Several cruise companies have been noticed to make some few revisions to their winter cruise itineraries for 2011. Here are some of them:

* Celebrity Cruises announced that their fleets would depart from Baltimore for 2011. However recently, they dropped their Baltimore plans and announced their ships will now have Australian itineraries. Cruise lines are trying to adjust to demands of the market, thus the quick changes in plans.

* Celebrity Cruises plans on three new 12-night round trip journeys with emphasis on different ports of call. These new cruise itineraries will allegedly be offered for September and October 2011. Celebrity's Constellation will reportedly sail all three journeys. The trip will begin with an overnight stay in Istanbul then will go on to sailing for Bodrum, Ephesus and Marmaris in Turkey. Then it will also call on Athens, Chania Crete, Santorini and Mykonos in Greece.

* Furthermore, Constellation will also go on a 12-night voyage from Amsterdam to Istanbul on September 7, 2011. It will then go on a repositioning cruise on October 25 from Istanbul going to Barcelona on an 11-night voyage. * Princess cruises will be presenting trips to Asia on 2011. Ocean Princess, in particular, will sail from Rome to Singapore on a 28-day cruise on October 25, 2011. The ship will stop over Sorrento, Kusadasi and Athens to pick up passengers after which, it will continue to the Suez Canal then proceed to El Sheikh, Dubai, Aqaba, Safaga, Mumbai, Muscat, Kuala Lumpur and Cochin.

* Brilliance of the Seas, a ship owned by Royal Caribbean will commence sailing to Dubai in January 2011. Extra winter season cruises are being studied and will set sail on November 2011 in United Arab Emirates.

* Royal Caribbean will also add two 12-night voyages beginning March 2011. The trip will start in Dubai then will proceed to Muscat, Oman, Goa, Cochin and Mumbai. It will also visit Mangalore Port in west India. Repositioning cruises are also featured from Barcelona to Dubai and vice versa on board Brilliance of the Seas.

* Carnival Magic will return in Europe summer of 2011. Carnival Magic is sister ship to Carnival's Dream. It will sail both nine-day and 12-day cruises out of Barcelona. Nine days will be allotted to visit ports of call such as Florence or Pisa, Monaco, Rome, Messina, Naples, Marseille and Palma de Mallorca. On one hand, 12-day cruises will touch ports in Rome, Livorno, Marseille, Messina, Naples, Dubrovnik and an overnight stay in lovely Venice.

* Norwegian Epic will also journey from Caribbean to Barcelona for summer next year. The trip will feature seven-day voyages with stopovers in Rome, Naples and Florence or Pisa.

At present, cruise activities for next year have already been set but it does not mean that all these plans will push through. It will still depend primarily on market demands.

Have you traveled on the Carnival Fascination, Sensation?

We are planning a cruise to the Bahamas for November. We have found mixed comments about the Carnival Fascination and Sensation cruises, so we're wondering if anyone has traveled on either one of them, even more so if you have done so with children. We have a four-year old.

Also, if you know much about any of the the Royal Caribbean International cruises, I would appreciate any comments.

Wife and I went on our first cruise for our honeymoon on the Sensation I believe. It was okay for the money, but from what I hear the Royal Caribbean line is far better. My experience was that while the decor was very dated and in bad need of some revamping, the staff was excellent, especially those down in the cabin areas. The on board entertainment was awful and not at all what is pictured in the commercials. Basically there was dumb stuff like fake game shows, bingo and the world's worst magician. The food was great in the dining room but the cafeteria areas were a little lacking and only some section were always open for snacking, and god help you if you wanted a calzone. You would literally have to stand there and wait while they thawed one and heated it. If you walked away to come back after they said it would take 15 minutes they would just stop making it for you.

As far as kids, they did seem to have a good setup for that. There were dedicated camp counselors types who had activities every day for the little ones and they had their own section of the ship where only they could go. A lot of the parents I talked with said the kids were never bored and they gave parents pagers so they could be reached at any time if the kids needed them.

So, I think if it's in the budget to go Royal Caribbean, from what I've been told it's worth it, but Carnival is okay too, just lower your expectations a bit.

Caribbean Cruise aboard the Celebrity Constellation - November 2008

The magnificent twin ships from Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, are about as similar as two ships can be! Same length, same breadth, same tonnage, amazing public spaces including seven distinct neighborhoods, heavenly staterooms and soothing spas. Yet there are certain areas in which these twins show their individuality, namely in some new shopping and dining venues.

One of the outstanding changes is the addition of a Brazilian-style steakhouse called Samba Grill on the Allure of the Seas. By day the area is a cafe in the adult only solarium. By night, the Solarium is transformed into a true churrascari with both indoor and outdoor seating, authentic Brazilian meats and seafood offerings carved table side, as well as lively music and specialty drinks. There is also a buffet with soups, appetizers and salad. The charge is $25 pp to eat at Samba Grill, and this does not include any beverages or alcoholic drinks.

Replacing the Seafood Shack from the Oasis, the Allure offers Rita's Cantina, a vibrant new Mexican restaurant in the Boardwalk neighborhood. The offerings include ceviche, chips with salsa and guacamole, as well as fajitas, tacos and flautas, a veritable fiesta on the Allure of the Seas. Let's not forget the margaritas. There's a selection of more than 15 different flavors to choose from, of course these have to be purchased separately. The charge to dine is $7.95 per person, and you can order as much as you'd like. Rita's also offers evenings of Latin delights with live guitar music, dancing and delightful libations. At least once per 7 day cruise, Rita's will have a Fiesta package available. For $20 pp you get 3 margaritas, tastings of various foods, party gifts and live entertainment.

Not to be outdone by the south of the border crowd, the Boardwalk area will also sport a new snack bar called the Boardwalk Dog House. It's pretty obvious what this venue will have to offer, but you get more than a variety of hot dogs including the ever popular Coney Island dog. Also available are brats, sausages and lots of toppings. This Dog House will occupy the space held by the Donut Shop on the Oasis of the Sea, but fear not, the Donut Shop has not been displaced, just relocated next to the Ice Cream Parlor right across the way.

Also unique to the Allure of the Seas are several venues that are a first on any cruise ship. Enjoy Starbucks at sea open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, shop at the new Guess store selling accessories including watches, belts and purses or shop for paintings and sculptures at the Romeo Britto store.

The Oasis of the Seas offers their rendition of the Broadway play, Hairspray. The Allure of the Seas cast performs the musical Chicago. The ice shows are different, with the Allure using the cast of the film How to Train Your Dragon. Comedy club, jazz and piano bars, a sports bar and various lounges can be found on both ships.

The Allure of the Seas was also the first RCI ship to feature a 3D movie screen at sea. The picture quality and sound are excellent. Various movies are shown during a 7 day cruise. Sorry folks, no popcorn but you can go grab a slice of pizza or cookies on Deck 5 before heading over to the movie. For the best view, enter through deck 4.

Last but not least, the Allure of the Seas was the first ship to feature characters from various DreamWorks movies including Shrek, KungFu Panda and Madagascar. Characters participate in a sail away party, parades and are available for pictures and a character breakfast as well. Dreamworks characters will also be featured on the Oasis of the Seas beginning in April 2011.

So much to do, so little time! You'll never find so many outstanding dining, snacking, noshing, nibbling, grazing and feasting experiences as you will on the Allure of the Seas, unless you're sailing with her twin, the Oasis of the Seas.

Where should I go on my honeymoon?

I will be leaving on Sept. 14 or 15 from Louisville, KY. I want to take a two week, international vacation for less than $5,000 including air, accommodations and most of the rest. I don't want to go to the Caribbean or Mexico--spending 2 weeks on the beach sounds far too boring. Western Europe is out as well, I've traveled most of Western Europe before and my fiance wants to go somewhere that is new to both of us. I want adventure travel, not deluxe travel. Anything is an option--Peru, Thailand, Morocco, Croatia, etc. Where should I go? Any links to particular trip options or vacation packages will be greatly appreciated.

South Africa is amazing!!!! Especially along the Cape (Western Cape/ Garden Route)! Not only is it gorgeous, but there is so much too do! Especially if you're into adventure! The highest bungy jump is there, cage diving with sharks, etc. Not sure of packages from the US, but it should be cheap, as the South African Rand is not very strong!!! Good luck!!!!! Enjoy!

Know Thyself 242 - Bahamian Clothing & Accessory Line by Erykah Monique

Living on a sailboat is a very cheap way to live. We did so for 8 years in the Caribbean. We stayed in the Windward's and Leeward's, going no further east than Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela.

Once the boat, Shadowtime, a 35-foot Island Packet, was in the Virgin Islands she never left the warm Caribbean, until we sold her 8 years later.

What do I mean by cheap living? Sailboat cruisers are the tightest people on the planet. The answer to why they are so cheap is they will do anything, legal of course, to avoid going back to work.

Here are some specifics:

1) Use public transportation...no boat has a car onboard so to get around the islands you take the bus, some regular size; more common is the 14-passenger van or Maxi Taxi. They cost anywhere from 7 cents in Venezuela to $1.00 in St Croix. Having no car expense is huge. No gas, no insurance, no maintenance, no parking fees, etc.

2) Use the library...When people ask how you stay in touch, you reply I do email at the library. All free. Using the library eliminates magazine charges and buying books (not really an issue as cruisers do many book exchanges). It is also a great place to crash midday if it is extra hot.

3) Boat improvements are cheaper...We had major canvas work done very cheaply. Bimini, dodger, sail covers, sail bags, dinghy tube and engine covers. Embroidery work in Trinidad is very high quality and cheap. I still wear some T-shirts and caps that were made many moons ago in Port of Spain. Teak woodwork is also very reasonable in Trinidad. A real teak, no veneer, cabin floor, teak grates for the cockpit, solid teak cockpit table...all great quality at 30% of what it would cost in the US. That is cheap living folks.

4) Eating out was very cheap. If you follow the two golden cruiser rules for restaurant selection. First, you and your companions had to be the only non-locals in the restaurant...and second, the menu had to be on a chalkboard. Follow these two rules you will eat cheap, as the locals do, and you will be guaranteed the meal you eat is fresh...probably caught that very day.

Once in the islands we spent around a $1,000 per month...now, that is cheap living. The lifestyle was priceless, many times we enjoyed sunset drinks in the cockpit anchored (that is free) off a five star resort that charged $500 a night. We had a better view.

what are some good islands to vacation on?

my family and i don't know wheres a good place to vacation. im 13 and my older sister is 14. me, my sister, and our parents want to go somewhere tropical like in the caribbean but we don't know which island to go to. also it has to be somewhere cheap and somewhere where we can go snorkeling.
also it has to be close to chicago

Tobago, Curacao, Bonaire, and Roatan are all relatively inexpensive places with good snorkeling, the latter two have great snorkeling.

Island/In state vacation??? Plz help........?

In March my friend and I have some vacation time and wanted to go somewhere different from Miami(nothing against it but we've been going at least once every yr). We would like to go to the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico but everything seems really expensive(I believe we've waited too late). We would ideally like to go somewhere warm/tropical, nice party scene and a place where they have reggae clubs and Caribbean/African style food(which we love). Any suggestions will be nice???? Oh also..if we DO decide to go to Miami are there any places like above(due to peoples preference I have yet to find any). THANKS IN ADVANCE.

when do you plan on going?? ive vacationed to south carolina a few times and i seriously had the best time out of all the vacations ive taken. if you go to charleston they have a TON of things to do esp if the weathers nice like a bunch of huge and i mean HUGE houses that have actually been in a lot of movies and downtown is really awesome and you can take carriage rides and they give you tours. Then if you drive about 20 minutes you can go to folly beach which has a lot of bars and cool surf shops and things and its right on the ocean and they have a really nice pier. theres also a place called isle of palms around there that has lots of big old really odd colored houses plus the ocean and many shops. food wise im not sure what kind of caribbean/african food they have we would just go to the places that were on the ocean because the views it was so relaxing but i would think since it is oceanfront they would have various food.

its A LOT of fun you just have to go at a peak time like spring break or summer months because its warm and lot of people out and the bars are super fun at folly beach when its summertime. we went to myrtle beach last xmas and it was def great but it was their off season and a lot of things were closed and we couldnt reallly walk on the ocean because it was cold so def go during warm weather!

also im 23 so i did want a vacation where we could party and stuff and you def can there and i thought it was great everything was right on the ocean because you could walk right down there from the bar and theres actually a holiday inn right in the center of folly beach and right on the ocean and next to the pier so thatd be a perfect place to stay. i just think florida/mexico is so typical for vacations and spring break i like to mix it up. a friend of mine moved to virgin islands too and thats a great choice as well
