I"m looking to take a trip with my girlfriend in January to the Caribbean but I'm overwhelmed with the amount of choices. Here's what we're looking for:
Around or under $400 to fly to
Under $200/night for a hotel
A non-tourist/commercialized area that still has plenty of activites
I'm trying to avoid Jamaica and the Bahamas, even though they're cheaper, looking for an authentic island where can relax during the day and engage in some activities at night.
St. Maarten/St. Martin is great. You can check out the island for two days and then move on to other islands such as Saba, St. Bart's, St. Kitts, Nevis, Statia and Anguilla by jumping on a quick ferry or flight. Great place to discover the great variety of Caribbean nations and cultures.

Cruise fanatics (RCL), please help! Whats in the Passport to Savings Booklet? When to book shore excursions?
Traveling Royal Caribbean to the Bahamas in May, and will be receiving a Passport to Savings Booklet from the travel agency. Anyone know whats in there and if there's anything for shore excursions? Just wanted to know if I should book my shore excursions (looking at the one to Blue Lagoon Island Beach Day) in advance or wait till I get on the ship to book them. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
I have been on several RCL cruises. The passport to savings booklet is nothing to get excited about. The shore excursions are very spendy through RCL. Booking your own once on the island is much cheaper. The nice thing about booking through the cruise boat is that it is safe. The food is pretty decent. If you are wanting to do something that will involve heavy drinking, you may want to book with the cruise boat. If you are late to the boat, they w-i-l-l leave without you. If you want to have cocktails, bring your own liquor in disguised bottles. ( water, soda, etc.) You cannot buy liquor on the islands and bring it back to your room. The drinks are VERY expensive on the boat. It is nice to have your own liquor in your cabin. You can buy liquor on the boat for your cabin, but it is not cheap. Most of the ports you will visit are heavy on the tourist shops... go beyond that if you really want to experience the island. Hire a cab driver ( make sure they are certified) to take you around. You will have a great time... there is so much to do on a cruise!!!
Is there a cooler caribbean island - not so hot at this time of year?
I want to travel to the islands sometime between Dec. and March, but believe it or not my skin can't handle the sun. I love the beaches, the people and food, as well as the cultures but I don't like the oppressive heat. I went to Dominican Republic twice, found it too hot (27 celsius). Is there a cooler spot in the Caribbean?
The further you get from the equator the cooler the island will be. Bahamas will be reasonable as will Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire. Check the department of tourism for any island and it iwll give you average temps for this time of year. My guess is you could do weather.com as well.

Drupatee Ramgoonai & Alison Hinds - Roll up de Tassa ( REMIX )
My new longdistance friend asked me to buy him a sweater - how weird is that?
He is an American guy (air force captain) that I met when he was on holiday in the Caribbean where I live.I'm not in the habit of 'picking up' tourists but .. it happened..he's coming back in March and we are in touch with texts..nothing deep and meaningful or heavy..He asked me to hook him up with a dive fleece..the thing will cost around US$120 to send to him..we only spent 1 long weekend together.I'm wondering if its 'cos hes used to getting parcels when he's overseas with the military or he's wealthy and thinks I am (I am so not)..is it cultural..is it normal for Americans to 'request' gifts?
Am I the one weird? What do you think?
I've just text him and said
'Hmm, not sure if you think I'm a rich sugar mama did you see my car!?
Will wait to see what he says..dont want to be a fool here..
perhaps he means to reimberse you just ask him ... p.s. i love your part of the world ..PARIDISE.. your rich in soul just to live there!
Has the Royal Caribbean Cruise company got a good reputation?
Is there service good and are the staff friendly on board most of their ships?
Thanks Sal....
Thanks Brittany
What crusies have you done? with Royal Caribbean please?
RCI is a great cruise line. The ships are nice, the staff is friendly, the food is delicious and there's a ton of activities. There are usually rock climbing walls and sport courts on the ships, and some even have ice skating rinks, roller rinks, and mini golf. There are also normal activities like TV trivia and bingo. I went on Majesty of the Seas last year and I loved the food, the ship, the activities, and the friendly people. RCI is also good for kids/teenagers and families in general because of the good kids program and the teen club.
An added bonus is the Crown and Anchor thing, which rewards repeat cruisers.
I am leaning towards Disney cruise (over Royal Caribbean), because it seems better for kids. I would like to go in December 2012. The girls will be almost 4 and almost 2 years old. I have cruised both royal and carnival, for 5 and 7 nights. I kind of thought a 5 night cruise would be good to start the girls with. I can only find 3, 4, or 7 nights (in December and not over the holidays). Is 4 nights long enough? Is 7 to long? We plan to have 1 more child, so this will be our last big vacation for several years. I really don't want to regret going with 4 days and feeling like it ends to soon. I also don't want to go 7 and be counting down the days until we get off the boat! Has anyone gone on Disney and can give me their opinion?
four nights definitly not enough i went on a seven day cruise and now i loved it so much and thought it went by fast that now i only go on world cruises. I've been on my first cruise when i was two years old and now i have been on forty-nine cruises my entire life. I only go on princess cruises and i adore their cruise line and their master suite I suggest you get the family suite with the balcony it has a spacious view on the emerald deck and every day they give you magnificent chocolate covered strawberries or you can pick from whatever else you want and they keep the lobster coming till you can't take anymore. The deserts are amazing the love boat dream is delicious it is a brownie with chocolate mousse and their chocolate cake is the best cake i've ever ate. Speaking of deserts at the main staircase where they have the piano players they have free deserts and they have tiramisu, cake, brownies, cookies, strawberry shortcake you name it. They have a kid's zone and my friend that i brought with me had one seven year old and she loved the kids zone so much that she didn't want to leave they get amazing prizes too such as a Princess teddy bear or pelican (their choice), tee shirt, hat, or ice cream they also get to decorate their own tee shirt the prizes and tee shirt are no cost to you. My favorite was the lotus spa absolutely glorious they do a amazing job on haircuts and cut, color, trim and high lights. I agree with the woman above your toddlers won't remember at all and If you have been on forty-nine cruises on the same cruise line and same ship you know your way around it after twenty times it took me that long. Their is free pizza, free ice cream and free deserts! EVERYTHING IS ALL INCLUSIVE!!!!

I have never been on a cruise before. I am going on a cruise in March to Mexico, Belize, and Grand Cayman on Royal Caribbean. I was wondering if anyone who has been on a RC cruise could give me an estimated price range for cocktails, and other alcoholic beverages on the ship.
Also... Am I allowed to purchase a bottle of liquor in one of our destinations, and bring it back on the boat with me to my room?
please and thank you
On average, $8 per drink. (Maybe as low as $6 for some of the less fancy quick drinks, as high as $12 for the large specialty drinks)
In theory - booze in your room not allowed.
In practice - it can be done. Here's how I've pulled it off before - buy at least 1 large bottle of liquor, and one or more smaller ones. Put the smaller ones inside another bag (with other souvenirs, inside your purse, etc.) and when they check all the passengers & the stuff they're carrying back onto the ship, surrender the large bottle. Most likely, they'll not check through everything else and leave your smaller bottles alone.
One exception to this rule: Bottles of wine are allowed (although they'll charge a hefty corkage fee and require you to drink them only in the dining room!)
WARNING. Be prepared to happily surrender all of it if you are caught. Do not attempt to smuggle anything more illegal than alcohol. Drugs, weapons, pets, don't even go there.
Has anyone been to Trinidad and Tobago? Its one of the best Caribbean spots to vacation; especially Tobgao!?
I was born and raised in Trinidad but I now live and work in Tobago. Trinidad is quite nice for shopping and night life, the best beach is Maracas Bay and the bake and shark, is a must along with pineapple chow! You can visit the Bird Sanctuary, The Pitch Lake are all places of interest in Trinidad.
Tobago is more a "tourist destination" great beaches all ove the island, nature trails, bird watching, water sports, trip to the "little Tobago", diving, fishing, snorkelling, great restaurants, fantastic people, and the "Sunday School" is a must. Presently we are celebrating "Heritage Festival" here on the island, every night there are different activities in the villages. Tobago is alot more laid back than most of the other islands in the Caribbean. Hope this helps! If you do visit, please try Carib Beer, our curry, cerole food and Tobago's 'crab and dumplin".
