Anyone out there an expert on islands in the Pacific?
Am thinking about moving to the area permanently, and looking for several specific features. Can you help?
1) Low cost of living.
2) Plethora of fresh fruits and vegetables.
3) Political stability and peace.
4) Hopefully, a spot less subject to monsoons and quakes.
In the Caribbean there are pockets considered to be out of the hurricane belt - Panama, Barbados, T&T, the Grenadines. Are there places in the Pacific that can be characterized in this way? Any helpful tips will be appreciated.
well since i lived on guam i would reccomend guam.
1. no, i dont think any place in the pacific has a low cost of living unless you move to a continental island. a volcanic island has little resources so everything has to be shipped and is therefore added to the price of the item.
2. its the tropics every island has a plethora of fruits and vegetables. on guam theres also a plethora of grocery stores with a plethora of fruits and vegetables and also a plethora of other processed crap.
3.politically guam is not stable, we still don't know if we want to seek out to be an independent, a commonwealth, or a territory of the united states, i think guam is fine with being a territory, and the US knows that they rely on Guam because of the military and they know culture wont get in the way because there is no culture on guam. It is however peaceful, somewhat
a lot of the other islands also deal with this stuff, whether to remain a territory or whatever to the country that posses the island.
4. its the pacific. you're going to get rain, earthquakes, heat, humidity, too much sun. a spot less subject to those would be an island in the doldrums. around the pacific known as the ring of fire is where there are earthquakes and volcanic action.
Guam's weather is one of the constants and is why they dont have a weatherman. 86/77 80% humidity and a chance of rain, i just gave the forecast for the entire year on guam.
if your american, just move to hawaii. Guam is in a panic mode right now, they're getting ready for a military buildup from okinawa. so the population of guam today is about 176,000 people and guams expecting a 20 year growth in the span of 5 years.
No place is actually out of a hurricanes reach, New York is out of a hurricane's reach but it has recieved some hurricanes in the past. Mother Nature is unpredictable, Guam and most of the pacific is typhoon resilient, though. Concrete houses, steel window shutters, etc.
hope i helped.
