While most visitors to this large Caribbean island associate Port of Spain as the “tourist attraction” with all it’s revelry surrounding Carnival – truly the islands largest party (called limin’ in trini-speak). But stray off the beaten path and you will find a wealth of natural attractions. We found one such place at the Point-a-Pierre Wildfowl Trust – a wetland habitat and peaceful haven where visitors may relax and enjoy bird watching. This unique situation of industry and conservation working side by side can also be utilized as an educational resource for clubs, schools and nature groups. It encompasses over 60 acres and two lakes within a large petrochemical complex – debunking that age old myth that where’s there is oil there can be no natural beauty!

Some species of waterfowl which you may see as you leisurely stroll the grounds (which also has an easy access ramp for the handicapped) are the Wild Muscovy Duck, the Blue-winged Teal, Silver Pintails and Hooded Mergansers. Among wading birds you may spot a Wattled Jacana or a Purple Gallinule sprinting on the large and ample lily pads. We were fortunate enough to see a large Anthinga (snake bird) regally basking in the afternoon sun. This species has recently been found to be nesting at the Trust.

While the sites were impressive, the numerous songbirds serenaded us with their delightful chirps. Frequent visitors to the Trust include the Red-capped Cardinal, the Yellow-hooded Blackbird and the truly golden Saffron Finch – so aptly named.

Not an avid bird watcher? Baffled by these strange names? The trust, thanks to the efforts of president Molly Gaskin and various other sponsors, provides an educational center with local guides to answer questions as well as an illustrated brochure for reference.

Our guide that day explained the conservation and breeding program in place for the Scarlet Ibis – truly a sight to behold. If you’re thinking Pink Flamingos – think again! We were told that these glorious creatures get their beautiful red color naturally from the red crabs that they eat in the wild. The Trust feeds them a combination of foods found in their natural habitat as well as a Carrotene supplement to achieve this look.

After your nature walk you can cool off in the Learning Center that houses information dealing living organisms and their habitats, a unique shell collection and a small comprehensive Ameridian Museum. All this for $8.00 TT (around $1.35 US) per person.

Make the trek south and enjoy this natural resource. Experience this conservation effort and you will understand the Trust motto – “To know is to love, to love is to preserve.”

caribbean vacations all inclusives

caribbean vacations all inclusives

Many people choose to book vacations at all-inclusive resorts because of the convenience and money it can save as opposed to doing things ala cart. While in most cases, this is true, be sure you know what is included before you book a vacation as you don't want to have an expensive surprise bill waiting for you at the end of a vacation.

There are some general things that most all-inclusive resorts include in their pricing. So, what should you expect when booking an all-inclusive vacation? First of all you will more than likely have access to transportation to and from the airport. Before you depart on your trip ask the resort where you need to go when the plane arrives to get this transportation.

Food and drinks are typically provided as well. This could be anything from breakfast, lunch and dinner off a particular menu for guests who have paid for the all-inclusive vacation to midnight snacks and afternoon teas depending on where you are staying. Some resorts will give you all the non-alcoholic beverages that you want, but if you want a drink with alcohol you have to pay for it. You might also have complimentary drinks and snacks in your room, but make sure that you won't be charge extra as mini bar prices can be high.

There are usually activities and programs that are included at all-inclusive resorts. This could be anything from children's programs and activities to dinner shows to snorkeling and scuba diving. Of course there are always other tempting activities that you have to pay for, but you just have to decide if it is worth skipping the included activities for something else.

Because each all-inclusive resort has its own set of guidelines, you will more than likely have more things included at some places than others. It's all in what you are looking for, where you want to go and what you want to experience. No matter which vacation you choose, you will no doubt save money and hassle by booking a vacation at an all-inclusive resort.

Where to have Caribbean Vacation?

I am trying to decide what resort to go on a all inclusive vacation? I have been to Ocho Rios, Jamaica and Punta Cana, DR both at RIU resorts. Where would be good to go nice, I have heard of many nice ones but think I may be addicting to RIU since I know there are good and have great entertainment throughout the day. I see the majority are in Mexico but am looking for a good beach vacation for $1200/person.

Many travelers looking for a tropical holiday worry that they will not be able to afford the luxurious accommodations for the Caribbean getaway they desire. However, that is simply not the case! Many Caribbean hotels are the ultimate destination for cheap Caribbean holidays that are comfortable, beautiful, and relaxing. Hotels that are more affordable for the thrifty traveler offer simple rooms with refreshing swimming pools, a hotel bar, and a fantastic restaurant with a great sample of local cuisine. Throughout the Caribbean, in exotic destination like Grenada, St. Lucia, and Tobago, travelers can enjoy a fantastic holiday on a budget.

The island country of Grenada is a choice destination for many travelers. Known as the 'Spice Isle' this tiny island produces an impressive amount of nutmeg, cloves, and mace. There are incredible spice markets to visit, and many wilderness attractions. These include the beautiful Concord Falls, the rainforest around Grand Etang Lake, and many spectacular trails. For the tourist on a budget, enjoying these natural wonders is free! Grenada hotels are varying in price. A thrifty traveler can stay in a simple room and enjoy cheap food from local markets, instead of an all-inclusive resort. This choice may also allow the traveler to see and enjoy more of the local culture than staying in an all-inclusive resort.

Another popular holiday choice is the splendid island of St. Lucia. This lovely mountainous island has beautiful scenery and is an excellent choice for people interested in hiking, trekking, outdoor adventuring, and nature. Most St Lucia hotels are on the Northwest coast, and a wonderful way to explore the whole island is to take a jeep tour across the island. As in Grenada, an excellent cheap choice is to pick a room-only hotel instead of an all-inclusive resort to save money and explore the culture of St. Lucia.

The peaceful island of Tobago is the ultimate destination for tourists on holiday looking for relaxation and calm. It has incredible reefs, perfect for avid snorkelers and divers, and the oldest protected rainforest in the Western hemisphere. Nature buffs can enjoy a multitude of species, birds, plants, and more. Tobago hotels are peaceful and calm. If a traveler is seeking some adventure to go along with the calm of Tobago, they can make a trip to the neighboring island of Trinidad known for its incredible nightlife.

Consider making the Caribbean islands a relaxing budget destination.

Another question about Dominican?

sorry to keep asking questions but hey this is what this site is for.
How safe is the Dominican republic for british Tourists please? Is it safe to go odd resort and do some of your own exploring or are you generally advised to stay within the grounds of the hotel unless on organised tours>
I ask this as have heard many of may mates that have been on Caribbean holidays say that stayed on hotel site as unsafe to go out.
Am thinking of going to Punta cana

It’s completely safe, I know the media tent to portray us with some violent issues (now a days news is all about violence anywhere pretty much) when in fact we are very friendly and we welcome tourists. Of course you always need to be careful when traveling to another country but for the most part is safe. Try to be alert at all times because the same way we have good people we also have bad but always trust your judgment. I have known people who have gone for the first time and rented cars for their stay with no problems but like I say use your judgment, see whom you ask questions, analyze where are you stopping, always look around for public offices/stores where you can ask questions or get shelter for any reason. If its your first time in the country its better that you take resorts’ tours because they know where to take you and where is safer. But this doesn’t mean that you don’t feel free to ask people for directions but make sure you carry one of those translator device with you just in case because the majority don’t speak English.

Unforeseen events may alter your financial circumstances. You may find that you are in a financial bind. Your priorities may be reassessed in this context. Surrendering life policies when finances are stretched takes place for two major reasons:

1) Inability to continue paying premiums

2) Need for a cash lump sum immediately

It often happens that people view insurance premiums as a luxury when income is stretched. However, surrendering a life insurance policy should be a last resort. This is because there are many other options with cash-value plans if one cannot afford to continue paying premiums. With a term insurance plan, surrender due to inability to pay premiums is less avoidable. The non-forfeiture options available with cash value plans include:

1) Automatic premium loan: If your policy has a sufficient cash value to cover subsequent premiums, the premium would be automatically deducted as part of a premium loan or withdrawal. This is not such a viable option if the insurer treats this as a loan that must be repaid with interest.

2) Reduced paid-up policy: The cash-value of your policy can be used as a single premium to purchase a reduced amount of permanent life coverage. This would preclude the need to pay additional premiums although the coverage may be greatly reduced, based on the cash value.

If you need to obtain a lump sum immediately and have few sources of wealth, you can withdraw or borrow from your cash-value policy without necessarily surrendering it. Some companies treat policy loans as interest-free with no requirement of repayment. Those policy loans effectively become withdrawals. More consideration is necessary if the policy loan requires repayment and with interest as well. If you have no option but to surrender the plan, you would receive the net cash-value. The net cash value is the cash value with adjustments made for dividends, paid-up additions, advance premium payments and policy loans.

Surrendering your policy within the first few years of issue would cause you to receive much less than you contributed. Insurers sometimes structure plans so that no surrender or administrative charges are levied after a certain period. The amount of your loss should be considered even if you really are in need of cash. All your non-forfeiture benefits with cash-value plans should be considered before you decide on a complete surrender. It is important to remember that the life insurance plan was acquired to cover a need. If times are difficult and the need for life insurance is still there, the burden on your beneficiaries would be even greater.

caribbean island of hispaniola

caribbean island of hispaniola

The Bahamas are an archipelago southeast of Florida and northeast of Cuba. It comprises about 700 islands and many more islets. Of the vast number of islands, only about 30-40 are inhabited. The geography of The Bahamas is mostly quite flat with only a few hills above 100 feet. The highest point is located on Cat Island at 206 feet. Since there is so little change in topography, the influence is minimal on weather effects.

The Bahamas are occasionally affected by tropical storms and hurricanes. The most likely chance of experiencing a tropical cyclone would be during the height of hurricane season. This generally is mid August through early October. The strongest hurricanes usually move in from the east around the Bermuda - Azores high. There are also no land masses to disturb the circulation from that direction. Any tropical cyclones that move north from the Caribbean Sea usually weaken over the high terrain of Cuba or Hispaniola.

In the northwest Bahamas, where most travelers visit (Nassau, Paradise Island, Freeport), there is a wet season and dry season with temperatures varying slightly over the year. The wet season runs from May through October and is due to the increase in tropical waves and other tropical weather. Rainfall ranges from about 10-18 days of rain (.01" or more). Rainfall averages from 5 - 10 inches. Afternoon high temperatures are in the mid to upper 80's and morning lows in the low to mid 70's. The dry season runs from November through April. The dry season is the result of cold fronts bringing dry stable air from North America. Rainfall averages 1.5 - 2.5" each month. There are only 5 - 8 days of rain. High temperatures are comfortable in the upper 70's to low 80's and morning lows in the low - mid 60's.

The southeastern Bahamas have a considerably drier climate especially toward Great Inagua. The wet season runs from September through December and is the result of tropical waves as well as cold fronts that stall in the region during November and December. Rainfall is on the order of 2 ½ inches to 3 ½ inches. The dry season lasts from January through August where only 1 - 3" of rainfall occurs. Temperatures are also quite uniform throughout the year since the effects of cold fronts are minimized. Highs are in the upper 80's during the summer and low - mid 80's the rest of the year. Morning lows are in the 70's all year, with close to 80 during the summer.

In summary, The Bahamas have a tropical maritime climate with a distinct wet and dry season. Generally, the southeastern Bahamas have a drier and milder climate than the northwestern Bahamas such as Nassau and Freeport. There is a threat of tropical cyclones, especially in August and September.

Shiver me shattered timbers; Do Ya Think It Really Is....?

The wreck of a treasure ship captured by the British pirate Captain William Kidd 309 years ago has been found in the Caribbean.
Lying in just 10ft of water, the Quedah Merchant is on the seabed off the island of Hispaniola, which is split between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Marine archaeologists are amazed that the wreck, which was scuttled in 1699, has lain undiscovered for so long.

Yes, it is a most exciting find. Let's hope that it doesn't get ruined by too many sightseers imagining that there is still treasure here and not realising that the true worth is in the history of the vessel! The treasure was removed hundreds of years back.
As a child my favourite book was entitled "Captain Kidd's Gold".

If you have been on a cruise before then you have a good idea of what you need to pack. If you have not then you need to put some thought into this. Do not forget a cruise is different that an air flight. You will be on the cruise ship for several days and will need to have a variety of clothing for the activities that take place here. Then you will need your wardrobe for the various ports you will be visiting. So try to think of it and plan for two mini vacations being one on the ship and the other on land.

You may or may not have an itinerary for the activities that are on the ship. There will be many wonderful things to participate in and you want to be sure you have the appropriate clothing. There will be many casual events as well as free time. You will want basic pants, tops and shorts for these occasions and a comfortable pair of shoes. Remember you are not going to have the luxury of going to a fully loaded closet of clothes everyday like you do at home, so you want to do some careful planning. If you pick neutral colors, you will find that you can make one outfit work for several different occasions. For example, let us say you have one black skirt, one black pants, and one white jacket and one black jacket. Now add two or three brightly colored tops to this selection and look at the numerous variations that you can do with it. You could almost coordinate for a whole week just with items. Then you will want a formal outfit or two. Again you could do something similar here but with less items. In this case, take two outfits and that should be enough.

The weather will vary somewhat from being on the ocean as to that of being at the various ports. Take at least one heavier outfit with you as well as one warm sweater, and a spring/fall jacket.

Take a few very light and airy outfits to wear when sunbathing. Do not forget your swimsuit most likely you will want to take advantage of the beautiful swimming pool you are most likely to find onboard. Some other activities may be more active such as tennis. You will want a cool outfit for these occasions.

You will want some accessories, such as hats, sunglasses, scarves and jewelry. Then make a list of incidentals that you will need as well along with some toiletries. Be sure not to forget important documents, such as your passport, and boarding passes and some identification.

It is important that you take any medication that you are going to require so check that you have enough of a quantity. It would not hurt to take some reading material as well, for those moments of basking in the sun. If you make a list of all your requirements then you will not forget anything.

Not for sure about going on a caribbean cruise in January.?

Normally my husband and I cruise during the summer but we decided to go Jan. 2011 to celebrate our 15th anniversary. However, I'm not sure we would have a lot of fun because its doing the winter month. I want to know what the weather would be like and I also want to know if anyone could recommend a cruise doing that month and why?

I have been on cruises to the Caribbean in December, last year, and January, a few years ago and in both cases the weather was great. On the first cruise which was about January 30, the weather in Miami when we departed was not as warm as usual and so it was kinda cool until we got further south to the Bahamas. But it was pleasant on the deck of the ship and by the time that we made our first stop in St Thomas the weather was good enough/ arm enough to go to the beach and get in the water. It was the same in St Maarten and in the Bahamas when we stopped for the beach party.

On my last winter cruise we stopped in Cozumel and it was as hot there as in the summer. It was the same in Grand Cayman and I had a great day at the beach in the water. Then our ship stopped at Haite and we got in the water again. Clear skies and great water for swimming and/or sunning.

On both cruises we did sail through a light shower but that's typical of the Caribbean any time. It lasted about half an hour and then it was sunshine again. There was no rough seas and there was smooth sailing the whole trip.

I already have another cruise booked for this December to the Caribbean again. You will have a great time and enjoy your cruise.

Is there a way to find out who will be performing on my cruise?

I will be on the Caribbean princess(princess cruise line) and i want to know who will be in the theater.
Like what comedians or shows? Sailing. June 14, 2010

Probably not that far out. At least not exactly who it is or for sure. I was talking with a guy who did a comedy show on a cruise I was on and he found out about the booking at the last minute. They actually flew him out to meet the ship at a port of call and he just finished out the cruise with everyone else. So, if he doesn't know in advance, how would you find that out?

However, sometimes there are specific cruises that have a specific entertainer on it that they advertise a while out. This is usually some band or something that does a number of concerts and parties throughout the cruise, so fans of that band will all want to go on the cruise.

Any Caribbean islands good for bicycling?

Looking to spend 5-7 days on either Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Aruba or Antigua. Would like to spend part of that time cycling, either around the island or from a home base. I don't hear much about cycling in this part of the world. Any suggestions/experiences? Open to other islands, but not to a "all-downhill" or super touristy experience. Prefer road to mountain biking. Would also appreciate any ideas on bike rentals.

I can only tell you about Puerto Rico because I have never been to the other places. But Puerto Rico would be great for cycling. Puerto Rico is beautiful, the whole island is beautiful. The outer edges are tropical beaches & the center is all lush green mountains. I think the mountain terrain would be good for cycling b/c u will go up & down & you can discover beautiful things along the way. PR is a US commonwealth so you will find the roads all paved & smooth & safe to travel, other islands might not be this lucky. Also there are alot of 'off the beaten path' type of trails through mountains & junglesas well. Puerto RIco has its on cycling federation. I included the website, however it is in spanish, but the first website about PR is in english. Spanish is the main language in PR but majority of people speask english as well.
