1977 was the year of the Snake in the Chinese Horoscope. Certainly, was a good year for those people who were born in the years 1929, 1941 and 1953.Trinidad Tobago has been known as one of the most beautiful countries in the Third World, but the Caribbean Island is also the birthplace of the first black Miss Universe Pageant in the History. Her name: Janelle Penny Commissiong.

In 1953 Janelle "Penny" Commissiong, the daughter of Venezuelan mother and Trinidadian father, came into the world in Port of Spain, Trinidad Tobago, a country very famous for its music and athletes as Ato Bolton and Hasely Crawford. In the 1960s she moved with her family to the United States.

In New York City, she studied fashion designer at the Fashion Institute of Technology. But she returned to Port of Spain in 1976, year where Miss Trinidad and Tobago, Margaret Elizabeth McFarlane, won the Miss Congeniality Title. Next year, Janelle Commissiong had been selected to represent the Island at the 1977 Miss Universe Competition in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

During the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant Miss TT was very popular, but was not favorite for the title. Miss Austria, Eva Maria Duringer, was a big favorite until last second. She looks like Farrah Fawcett, an actress best known for her role on Tv's Charly Angel's in the 1970s.Other favorites were Miss Colombia, Aura Maria Mojica, an exotic girl from Cali; and Miss Nicaragua, Beatriz Lacayo Obregon, a spectacular Latin Barbie from Managua. But none favorite did not speak English very well.

Miss Trinidad-Tobago was elected Miss Photogenic 4 days before the final. She was the second black woman to win the award in the Miss Universe History. On July 16th, in the National Theater of Santo Domingo, Janelle Commissiong was awesome in the semifinal and final. It was a very good day for her. Miss Austria did not show the same talent compared to Miss TT. Minutes later Janelle Commissiong was crowded Miss Universe.

Miss Trinidad and Tobago attracted international attention in 1977 because she was crowded as the first black in the chronology of Miss Universe. At the end of the transmission, via satellite, the Trinidadian celebrated the triumph of Janelle Commissiong. Port of Spain was a carnival. Every newspaper had the same story. The New York Times said that "Miss Universe 1977 was a black bombshell". Certainly, the world did not have a black Miss Universe until 1977.

There were 12 judges: Oscar de La Renta (Dominican designer), Dionne Warwick (American singer), Gordon Parks (American photographer), Roberto Cavalli (designer from Italy), Marisol Malaret (formerly Miss Universe), Wihelmina (designer from the Netherlands) and other personalities. When Janelle was crowded as Miss Universe, Dionne Warwick said "I felt as If I had won".

After her reign, she had an interview with Joaquin Balaguer, President of the Dominican Republic (a fan of Miss Universe Pageant) in the National Palace. Like Miss Universe, she visited many nations around the world: from Iceland, Argentina, Hong Kong, Peru, Puerto Rico to the United States.

In 1978 Janelle went to Chile, where she was a special judge at the "Miss Beaches of South American". During her reign, she had been an advocate for black's rights and the world peace. She wants to meet with Idi Amin Dada, one of the worst dictators of the 20th Century.

Like Roberto Clemente, Mary Eugenia Charles, Marlene Ottey, Billy Ocean and Tim Duncan, She is an icon in the Caribbean...

omg!!! I need help! How has the geography of the Caribbean Islands affected their art?

The art is very unique from island to island and not as similar over the span of the islands. Basically when you are bordered by other places their art rubs off on you, bordered by water? Very few outside influences.

Perhaps now, more than any other time is the right time to take a Caribbean cruise. In the wake of some of the recent negative publicity about cruise lines and the frequency of bad weather, etc. cruising has never been more affordable.

The problems are mounting for cruise lines and to counteract the concerns, cruise companies are dramatically "cutting" prices, offering Caribbean trips for as little as $529 per person (traveling in August). If you prefer traveling in the fall, deals can be had for as little as $749 per person.

Other reasons for lower cruise prices are the new ships that are taking bookings away from older, smaller ships. For example the Royal Caribbean's new mega "Freedom of the Seas" ship is the largest cruise ship in the world with room for 3,600 passengers. It has every imaginable amenity including a 1,215 square foot presidential suite. The popularity of sailing on this treasure ship draws passengers away from other ships; thus the prices go down on the smaller ships.

Also lending to lower rates, are the bizarre incidence that have occurred while cruise ships have been at sea. These include bad press about sanitary conditions aboard ship, strange viruses that have affected hundreds of passengers, passengers who have been murdered or simply disappeared and even a pirate attack on a Carnival cruise ship.

Of course, there are high-end cruises that you can indulge in. You can spend thousands by booking a space on the Royal Caribbean "Freedom of the Seas." When you spend more, you obviously get more in the way of room accommodations and extras that are included when you tour the many ports that are included in your cruise experience.

Whether you're trying to plan a honeymoon or a vacation for the whole family, the long winter months are a great time to go on vacation; it can offer a much-needed reprieve from the cold, gloomy days and give you the recharge you need to make it until spring (there's a reason they call it the winter blues!). Here are just a few of the many warm, tropical escapes you should consider for your next winter getaway.

DisneyWorld - The temperate year-round climate of Orlando, Florida makes it the ideal place to vacation during the winter months. In fact, from November through February, daytime highs are typically in the 70s and while you may need a light jacket for the nights (lows are usually in the low 50s), the weather is darn near perfect to explore the magic of DisneyWorld and the surrounding parks and attractions.

A Caribbean Cruise - Not only are the winter months one of the best times to set sail in the Caribbean, it can also be one of the cheapest. September through December (with the exception of Christmas and New Year's weeks) is considered the low season so you'll be able to enjoy the warm weather at a fraction of the cost!

Beach vacations. This one is a little bit more broad but aren't winter getaways all about getting some R&R? Beach vacations pretty much anywhere in the southern hemisphere (think Mexico, Aruba or virtually anywhere in the Bahamas) may just be what you need to beat your winter blues! A week lounging on the beach in the warm sun sipping margaritas is enough to revitalize and boost just about anyone's spirits.

Is there anyone going on a Crown Princess Cruise on December 23 2010? have you ever been on it? experince?

what was the cruise like? what did you do on the ports? where were the ports? what did you do on the boat? what is the library like? is there a Computer to go on for fun? when did you go on the cruise? What should I pack (its Christmas) i don't really know the weather because where i live (newfoundland, Canada) we get A LOT of snow and cold. It is a western Caribbean cruise (princess cays, grand cayman, Cozumel Mexico and Montego bay Jamaica are the ports). What do they do on Christmas? what was the food like? What else can you tell me?

Are you going on the same cruise? are you excited?

I am 16 going with my family (7 of us including me) in 4 days we leave i am SOOOOOOOOO excited!! it is my first cruise!! :D

I went on the Crown Princess this past Feb. The cruise was fantastic...I had no complaints whatsoever.
For the ports: Grand Cayman, we just got off the ship and walked around the shopping area (it was walking distance from the ship). Cozumel, we went to the Mayan ruins...I highly recommend (it's an all day excursion but well worth it if you've never seen the ruins before). Princess Cays, we just laid on the beach it was really nice (this is their private island so it's only people from your ship). They had a real nice lunch buffet too.
We also went to Roatan, this must not be on your itinerary....we went to a beach there, it was just ok.
On the boat, we just relaxed mostly by the pool areas.....went to the spa one day and got a massage. I did not check out the library. I do think there are computers to use for a fee.
You should pack shorts, t-shirts, etc....lots of sunscreen since the sun is much stronger there than where you are from. Bring a hat and sunglasses. Also bring comfy shoes, like gym shoes.
The food on the ship was great.....I did not have a bad meal.
You will have so much fun!

For people who love to travel, starting a travel agency specializing in cruises can be very exciting. Earning a living by talking about your cruise experiences and helping direct less experienced cruisers to the right vacation can be very rewarding. Many people are also attracted to the travel discounts you can receive by becoming a member of the International Airline Travel Agency Network (IATAN). Membership is available after earning $5,000 in commissions during the previous 12 month period.

It takes a little while to build your business. Great customer service and knowledge of the business are key ingredients to a successful career. Cruise lines tend to specialize to certain types of people. Some appeal to older crowds, others have many activities for children, while look for more active cruisers by providing more daytime activities on the ship or nighttime entertainment choices. One of the best ways to gain a lot of customers quickly is to sell a group trip. Join local groups, religious organizations, college alumni programs, etc.

Cruise lines typically pay commissions of 12% - 15% of the base fare. This excludes charges for port taxes and government fees. Additional money can be made by selling travel insurances where commissions are much higher, selling tours while your clients are on land and booking airfare and transportation to the airport or port. If your clients take travel insurance, they will be covered in case of delays, lost luggage or sickness, which will reduce your chances of having an unhappy customer.

As with any upstart business, you need to control expenses. A cruise travel agency can be operated right out of your home with the majority of work done through the telephone or internet. Cruise tickets can be sent by messengers to your clients. One of your more important and higher expenses will be the Errors and Omission Insurance Policy. This will protect you from mistakes during the booking process or from errors in printed materials or advertising.

That kind of sentiment may be exactly what draws a lot of people to try out freestyle cruising where you can do almost anything you please, provided that you be on the ship by the time in departs the port ...

If you are a party lover who loves to party, party and party then taking a freestyle might be just what would please you ...

That, however, does not mean that a family with kids cannot a cruise vacation or that there will be party lovers will be wildly running up and down the ship at all hours of the day and night. Something that you might have been thinking about especially if you are a light sleeper ...

It just means that the ambiance on a freestyle cruise is a lot more relaxed than on a traditional cruise.

And there will be all the great amenities on board that people taking traditional cruises may have come to expect. There will be lots of fun activities for kids, babysitting, kids programs and more.

The food on board is just about as good as on any other cruise ship. And for people who grow a bit weary of the carefree attitude, there may also be some more formal eateries.

If you have never tried freestyle cruising, then maybe you would want to book one and see what the experience will be like.

However, it is always a good idea to do some research on the ship that you will be on. Before you buy the tickets, you might want to do some research on the ship and the destinations and see whether the atmosphere on board the ship and at the destinations will suit your personality. You could visit one of several forums and see what people who have already been on the ship have to say about the crowd on board and about the destinations.

Are carnival cruises stressful?

as silly as this may sound, I feel like they are more stressful than relaxing! I am going on a 7-day southern caribbean cruise with carnival January 2011. There are no fun days at the sea, every day there is a port. I feel like getting off and on the ship this many times is going to be crazy. And there are SO many people on the ship, it seems as though everyone will be getting off around the same time, total chaos, and i feel like the beaches will be so crowded and loud and yeah I don't know.. is that how cruises are? Are they crowded of strangers? I just want to enjoy the trip with my daughters!

No, cruises are NOT stressful!! Although a 7 day cruise with no fun days at sea will be tiring!! BTW, you don't HAVE to get off the ship at every port. If you want, you can spend a "fun day in port" on the ship. Certainly less crowded then.

Getting on and off the ship goes pretty smooth. If you are going on an excursion, they tell you to meet in a certain area of the ship, and when its time to depart, they take you right to the pier (or tender). They also spread out the excursion times so that not everyone is leaving at the same time. Returning is even easier because you can return at any time, so no lines unless you wait till about an hour before departure to return.

The beaches (that I went to) were not crowded, because not everyone goes to the beaches. There are so many excursions to choose from, that the crowd get divided up pretty good.

I think the only stress you will find on the cruise is looking after your daughters!!

What is the best resort in the caribbean that is all inclusive and has a nice casino?

I am going there for my 18th birthday with some people and would like to gamble/drink and have a good time. Where is the best place in the caribbean to do this?

The Westin Aruba Resort ( http://www.resideo.com/aw/palmbeach/08754867.hotel ) is probably one of the highest-rated. They've got a huge casino (1,115 square meter).

The Breezes Puerto Plata Resort Spa & Casino All Inclusive ( http://www.resideo.com/do/cabarete/17527478.hotel ) just finished some extensive renovations, so that might be another "good bet". ;-)

Good luck!

When considering power yachts and sailing yachts it is realized that there are so many different models and designs of charter yachts. Consequently there will be so many different layouts of the cabins and living quarters on yachts along with the feel and ambiance that different designs generate. It is not possible to cover every option here so it will be better to state the basics that every yacht will have and to familiarize you with the terms that you need to know when booking your vacation to make sure you explain what you want.

What ever the yacht the following terms are the same. The largest and nicest cabin on board is the master cabin, and in most cases has an attached en suite bathroom and will have the largest bed and fittings such as closets and drawers. On larger yachts that might well be a VIP cabin which would be the next nicest cabin. The next level of cabins would be the guest cabins, with double or twin beds. The twin beds might in fact be bunk beds so you must clarify this point when booking to save any disappointments later on. Bunk beds are ideal for kids but may not appeal to adults.

The beds will typically be arranged 'fore and aft' in the yacht. It might mean that you will roll around in your bed as the yacht moves in the sea but this is the best arrangement. If the sailing yacht is heeled over under sail then you will gravitate to one side of the bed. This is not uncomfortable, just different to what you are used to. The alternative arrangement is athwartships which is not so comfortable because as the ship rolls your head is one moment above the level of your feet and the next moment below them. Please keep this in mind when looking at the bed arrangement on any yacht you are thinking of chartering.

Smaller yachts mean smaller cabins and smaller cabins mean smaller beds. The size of yacht that you will charter as a bareboat charter will be at the smaller end of the market and so will have less space and features than a larger crewed charter yacht. The master cabin on a bareboat yacht will often have a three quarter size double bed with two or three sides open to access. The bed could be of a step up island design where it is raised a step up from the cabin floor. This is due to the design of the yacht as the space under the bed is used for other functions of the yacht. The island bed looks grand but can be difficult for taller people who may need to bend more to avoid touching the ceiling when stepping up to get into bed.

The master cabin should have a full length closet, but possibly a half closet and adequate drawers for your clothes and possessions. In the guest cabins with bunk beds be aware the height above each bed may be restricted and more suitable for children than tall adults. The bunks will be quite narrow but you will soon get used to them and in fact they will be quite comfortable if the yacht is rolling as it is easy to brace yourself. In some twin cabins such as the 'vee' cabin in the bow of the yacht the length of the bed might be restricted and a tall person will be unable to stretch out completely. This might also be the case with the bunk beds. This will not be a problem with the master bed as the bottom of the bed will be open.

The closet and draws in guest cabins will be limited in size so do not pack too many possessions. However there will be enough space if the space is managed sensibly. Some yachts have the facility to convert the dining table and couches into a bunk but it is not a good idea to hire a charter yacht with a view to this bed being used by members of the party. This is inconvenient and can cause tension with late risers or untidy guests. It might seem a good idea in the first instance to save money on your sailing vacation but you really should have a fixed bed for every guest.

4 people in 1 cabin... any advice please?

Ok I was so excited about going on this Caribbean cruise next month that I wasn't that concerned at 1st. But I've cruised before & know how small cabins are (we're in an outside quad) and I'm kinda concerned about how uncomfortable we'll be. First we all have to shower before dinner & only one shower? Will we ever make it to dinner on time? Also it's 3 girls & 1 guy (we're all friends) but we don't wanna change clothes in front of him. So that's going to be an issue. If you guys have any tips to make things a little easier we'd luv to hear them :)

Remember to pack a power strip. There is only one outlet in the room.

You might want to select the late seating for dinner so you have plenty of time to get ready.

Caution everyone to pack light. There is only a small amount of closet space.

Everyone should take a duffle bag for dirty clothes so the room does not get too clutter or smelly...

Consider taking 2 swimsuits...who likes putting on a wet swimsuit and with so many people sharing the same bathroom, your suit will never dry just by hanging up.

Use the space under the bed to store your luggage.

Barbados is not unlike other Caribbean Islands in the sense that it is not socially liberal towards the gay community. In fact, homosexuality is considered illegal in Barbados, however this law is not enforced if behavior is maintained as discreet. However, due to the advent and increase in popularity with gay cruise lines, Barbados and the nightlife in Barbados gay bars has become increasingly popular for the gay traveler.

There is no reason that the conservative stance of Barbados and the Caribbean Islands should deter you from a vacation in Barbados. This is especially true because cruise lines that cater specifically to the gay traveler will have an abundance of information on gay friendly activities and nightlife. Some cruise lines will even set up port in Barbados and open their own intimate gay bars for travelers on the cruise ship.

Activities that you can enjoy in Barbados are many, and this is why Barbados enjoys visits from so many return travelers, even from the gay community. You will enjoy surfing, windsurfing, and wreck diving. You will also enjoy a nightlife where you can choose from disco or jazz bars and openly enjoy yourself with the rest of the gay community.

If you are looking for accommodation in Barbados, you may be surprised to find that smaller locales that offer a more intimate setting will be more gay friendly than larger hotels and resorts. Small bed and breakfasts are located all over Barbados and offer gay travelers a welcome place to lay their head, and often in a much more affordable manner. Owners and operators of these establishments will also be able to direct you to the hottest Barbados gay bars on the island.

Travelers are looking to rejuvenate and invigorate their lives while experiencing relaxation and adventure. Purposeful pleasure is becoming increasingly popular. Cruise ships are catching on and riding the wave with their many enrichment programs. Some more than others.

Special interest speakers provide a series of original presentations on destinations and topics of special interest to cruise guests.

The Cruise Critic remarked of Grandeur of the Seas, launched in early 1996, one of Royal Caribbean's older vessels: "There's also no enrichment program (unless you count napkin folding and dollar origami), though that is fairly customary for Royal Caribbean in general."

To Royal Caribbean's defense their International cruises do offer enrichment programs on the following - "Fun and unique" topics with a broad appeal, Culture and topics that relate to the cruise itinerary, Billiards, Anything "Behind the Scenes," History presented in a fun way, Journalism, Art, Mardi Gras, Sports, Theater/Hollywood, Astronomy, Nature/Wildlife, Space Program, "British" topics, New Age, Men's topics, Seasonal and Holiday topics.

Celebrity Cruises offers - Art History, World Affairs, History, Culture, Maritime History, Celebrities/Hollywood, Theater, Music, Journalism, Nature/Wildlife, "Meatier" topics with a broad appeal.

Discovery World Cruises provides - Cultural, Current Events, World Affairs, Politics, History, Journalism, Art, Astronomy, Nature/Wildlife, "Meatier" topics with a broad appeal.

Princess Cruises give their guests - Destination/Port Related, Cultural, Current Events, World Affairs, Global Economics, Politics, Maritime History, Art History, American History, Science, Astronomy, Television & Radio Journalism. And on limited voyages, Hollywood & Movies, Creative Arts/Music & Writing, Self-Help, Culinary, Health & Wellness, Finance, Home Improvement.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises enrich travelers with topics covering - Cultural, Globalization, Current Events, World Affairs, Politics, History,Art, Astronomy, Nature/Wildlife, "Meatier" topics with a broad appeal.

Norwegian Cruise Lines entertain guests with - Digital Photography, Technology, Computers, Futurists, Gadgets & Gizmos topics.

When inquiring with cruise lines ask them about their enrichment programs and tell them what you specifically are looking for. If you can get through the telephone bureaucracy and patiently ask to be transferred through to the enrichment program director, your suggestions for new topics might also carry weight if you have enough passengers traveling to leverage getting your speaker or topic of choice on board.

Cruise lines and ships want to serve and satisfy their guests. Therefore if enough people request a program, topic, or speaker rest assured a good cruise line will bend over backwards to accommodate you and make you happy.
