I've visited Grand Cayman twice. Today is the fourth day of my second visit and I have yet to meet anyone actually from this small Caribbean country. The woman who gave me a pedicure this morning is from northern England; the hairdresser, from Georgia (I admit to a fair amount of pampering); our hired driver, from Jamaica; waiters from Tunisia and other distant lands, but none from Cayman, most not even from the Caribbean.
I live in Barbados, where Barbadians hold the majority of jobs at all levels of society. I've always felt that locals give a country a sense of place. If not for locals, I figure I may as well be in an airport, easily the most place-less places on earth.
However, after snorkeling the pristine Caribbean waters of Cayman, I really couldn't hold this place-less-ness against Grand Cayman. Each Caribbean island holds a certain magic, including Grand Cayman.
After two visits spent snorkeling, dining on delicious seafood, and walking the gorgeous and famed Seven Mile Beach, I take away the following knowledge and impressions of this small, English-speaking island:
About Grand Cayman
1. Grand Cayman offers some of the world's premier snorkeling and SCUBA locations. The draw? The graceful stingrays, sunken ships from its pirate days, and beautiful coral. The beaches are pristine and the Caribbean Sea are a pretty light blue, warm, very gentle, and as clear as a glass of water.
2. Grand Cayman is a fantastic place to do absolutely nothing. Hotels line the soft white sand of Seven Mile Beach. Five minutes on this beach and I enter lazy mode; on one day of my holiday, my greatest exertion was holding my hand out to take my next iced beverage from the waiter.
3. Grand Cayman is about 22 miles long and 4 to 8 miles wide and at sea level; like Barbados it is a coral island, not volcanic. My first impression was that it's a sandbar, so different from the varied geography of my home country of Barbados. The highest point on the island is the landfill.
4. Grand Cayman is the largest of the three islands comprising the Cayman Islands. The other two are Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.
5. Cayman is located in the Western Caribbean Sea, about 400 miles south of Miami. (In contrast, Barbados is in the Eastern Caribbean, about 1600 miles south and east of Miami.)
6. Cayman was first sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1503. He named the three islands Las Tortugas after the sea turtles. The name of Cayman, a Carib Indian word, came later, after a local species of crocodile.
7. Cayman never had slaves (unlike Barbados, which after 1650, imported thousands of African slaves to work the sugar cane fields).
8. Cayman and Jamaica were governed as a single British colony until 1962 when Cayman became designated a "British overseas territory," one of 14 territories under the sovereignty of the UK but not part of the UK and Jamaica became independent. (Barbados, also once a British colony, is one of the 53 member states belonging to the British Commonwealth.)
9. The Cayman Islands have more registered businesses than people (population is around 60,000). The government's primary source of income is indirect taxation: there is no income tax or capital gains tax or corporation tax. Based on income, the Caymanians enjoy the highest standard of living in the Caribbean. Locals complain there's not much to do on the island; they tell me it's a more enjoyable place for tourists (and corporations!) than people who live there.
10. The Cayman Islands have the dubious honor of having experienced the most hurricane strikes in history. Hurricane Ivan almost completely destroyed the unprotected island in 2004; within two years, the Caymanians had rebuilt their country.
Where to go for your next vacation? Do you want to travel to the top of the mountains or to dive to the bottom of the sea? Well, these travel ideas might only be interesting for the happy few with special interests. But anyway the World is offering a staggering number of fantastic travel destinations of which some are much more accessible than others.
This article will open your eyes for some of the best vacation spots in the World and also mention some of the best travel sites to provide further information before you book one of the vacation packages.
Whatever you are looking for one of the budget vacation packages or you are searching for true luxury holidays you should realize that you are not only spending money to go on vacation. You are also spending a part of your life during that time of vacation. We have a limited time living -we all know that.
We benefit from spending our time in such a way that we can look forward to our future travel destinations with pleasure, during the travel period we should experience a great time and - very important - when we get back from our vacation we should have nice travel memories from the holidays to keep for the future. It is human nature to live with the memories as an important part of our quality of life. The more different travel tours we experience compared to our daily life the stronger memories they will generate - often as travel memories for life.
Personally I am a big fan of holidays on islands. Top travel destinations will include a number of island vacations in my future and also in my travel suggestions here.
So where are the best vacation spots: Let us divide the answer in some travel categories?
1. Travel to a destination with a relaxed atmosphere and enjoying a variety of leisure activities
Many of the Caribbean islands will live up to such a travel profile:
Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Montserrat, Netherlands Antilles, Puerto Rico, Saint Barthélemy, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Martin (France), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos, United States Virgin Islands (US Virgin Islands). These islands are all blessed with local beautiful sandy beaches, blue water, a tropical scenery and easy access to some sport facilities, water sports etc. And the food is usually delicious.
Especially the Spanish speaking islands for vacation will live up to the relaxed atmosphere.
I must admit that a few of these islands could also be included in the next category, for example Tobago, with its lush rainforest, unspoiled bird life and attractive nature in general. In US you should take a serious view on Sanibel Island in Florida and Padre Island in Texas. They offer great vacation packages to a reasonable price.
2. More exotic travel destinations
These more exotic travel destinations will provide you with extraordinary memories and open a new world for your understanding of the world and how people live and how nature is far from your homeland.
Greenland is such an exotic travel destination. You can go there all year round but with very different experience. The daylight during the night in the summertime gives you lot of time to experience this outstanding island - the biggest island of the world. You will never forget a travel to Greenland.
Madagascar is the big island east of Africa in the Indian Ocean - a huge island with extraordinaire nature and a very interesting culture of the local tribes. Many species of birds other animals and plants are only living here. I am sure you have seen some glimpses of these exotic animals on TV.
The Galapagos Islands - these unique islands are difficult not to mention in a list of some of the best vacation ideas. Most tourists come to The Galapagos Islands with one of the travel packages offered from local travel agencies through your travel agent in your country. A trip to Galapagos will always be a cruise trip as tourist will live on a cruse ship to be able to visit the different islands of the Galapagos archipelago. I prefer a smaller boat for a bigger cruise ship for the best Galapagos experience. Expect to come very close to breeding birds, reptiles and sea lions. A once in a lifetime experience.
3. Travel to a remote luxurious destination
The most attractive remote luxurious travel destinations I will reveal for you is Bird Island in The Seychelles Islands and Heron Island at the east coast of Australia, The luxury isn't that much the overwhelming provision of buildings, furniture and facilities but the outstanding place and atmosphere. You can find many luxurious travel destinations that boost much more an artificial setting - but before you decide for that, take a look at the Seychelles with Bird Island. Bird Island is a private island with no other hotel but the Bird Island Lodge - a true tropical paradise and a bird watcher's dream come through.
Don't forget Heron Island at Great Barrier Reef in Australia for your next luxury vacation. Heron Island has world famous diving and snorkelling in the most beautiful setting.
Have many of you done the shore excursions when on a cruise of the caribbean?
How safe are they?
Do you get hounded by hawkers?
Are the following considered okay for shore excursion's
St Thomas,
St Maaryen
San Juan, Puerto Rico
Labadee, Haiti
I have been to all of the places that you listed multiple times and I can tell you that they are all very safe as long as you do not go off the "beaten path" on your own.
St Thomas is a shopping mecca and now there are two places where ships dock there, on opposite sides of town. Each place has some shopping right at the port but you'll need a taxi to get to town where the major stores are located. You can safely walk out of the port areas; we did that last time there in Dec looking for an internet cafe. If you go on a tour from the ship or own that you book on your own you will have a tour guide who will not take you any places where you will be in danger. You'll also need a taxi to got to the beaches and the places that they go are also safe; been to Megan Bay Beach and Sapphire Beach.
St Maarten is also a safe place. There is/was more hawking there than in St Thomas but neither place was like Jamaica where people can really pester you. St Maarten is a beach and shopping stop also. You can, and I did, walk the streets in town there on your own.
San Juan is also safe in the pier and downtown area. The cruise ship pier is right downtown and you can get off the ship and go on your own to the forts and the "old San Juan" areas. I have done both on tour and on my own. I have also done the El Yunque rain forest tour and it is nice, safe, but takes a good amount of time to get there and back.
If you are going to Labadee then you just be doing a Royal Caribbean or Celebrity cruise. Labadee is a Royal Caribbean/Celebrity crusie line private island stop. Its not like a stop in Haiti where you can go off on your own. The ship will dock and you'll be tendered to shore for a day at the beach. The island is huge and has multiple beaches and there is a tram that will take you from one side of the island to the other. There is a water park called Arawak that you pay a fee to use and basically enjoy the ocean jumping off floating platforms and using a slide. You can also do a zip ling tour there that's fantastic. The ship will bring food ashore for lunch. There is also a shopping area where you can buy all manner of souvenirs. But the sales people are restricted to that area and do not bother you at all on other parts of the island. The only people on Labadee are the passengers, the crew, the service people and the people in the market area,. Its completely safe there.

Yacht security has never been more important to luxury yacht owners and users. The world is an increasingly uncertain place; high net-worth super yacht owners face special challenges due to their wealth, connections and ownership of an expensive asset that always attracts attention - and not just from admirers on Monaco's Quai des États-Unis.
The special challenges of super yacht security
Because of their special characteristics and the lifestyles of their owners and users, super yachts pose special security challenges including the following:
They are an expensive asset associated with wealth.
Owners and users may face greater than average security threats.
They are particularly vulnerable to covert approach.
Users often visit remote places for privacy - which increases their vulnerability.
Their valuable contents demand special yacht security measures.
Fortunately, yacht owners can easily go online to find reputable maritime security consultants offering a wide range of services designed to protect them, their guests and property. From dissuading annoying paparazzi to maritime bodyguards who protect against hijacking and hostage taking, expert professional support is only a few mouse clicks away.
Yacht security begins with a maritime risk assessment
Appropriate yacht security begins with a thorough assessment to identify the level of risk facing a vessel and its owner. For instance, a UK-domiciled company director who spends weekends cruising the English Channel will face very different security risks to a high profile billionaire industrialist whose guests include Middle Eastern royalty, and whose nautical passions extend to global cruising and visiting known high risk ports. An initial risk analysis will consider all these factors.
Appropriate maritime security solutions
Whether the assessed risk is a yacht break-in or hijack by Somali pirates, the challenge facing security specialists is to deliver appropriate protection while minimising disruption of the principal's lifestyle. The risk analysis (or 'maritime security risk assessment') will enable the appropriate level of response to be calculated and deployment of bespoke security measures - a carefully designed combination of yacht security systems, smart home technology, intelligence, manned guarding and training for the owner and crew.
Taking the next step towards better marine security

Under 21 cruising alone on RCI?
I was looking into booking a cruise for Spring Break on Expedia, but it looks like most of the cruise lines require you to have at least one person 21 or older in your stateroom (I'm 19 and my GF is 20). However, for Royal Caribbean, Expedia states that "Royal Caribbean requires that passengers under 18 years old must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old. Some exceptions are made for married couples and families traveling in multiple cabins. Please call a Cruise Specialist at 1-888-249-3978 if this applies to you." Elsewhere I have read that you need to have at least one person 21 or older to book a RCI cruise, but Expedia says you only need to be 18. Which is correct?
You have to have at least one person who is 21 in the room, but if you are married and call that number you will be given permission to go without someone who is 21. Otherwise they will not let you book. If you're going for spring break my suggestion would be to ask 2 friends (that are also a couple and one at least 21) if they'd like to go, you can all get a room together (rooms hold up to 4 people) and then you won't have to worry about trying to book a vacation with your age.
But just to let you know cruise lines have also changed the rules and you must be 21 the day the ship sets sail to be able to drink (so if you turn 21 while on the ship you are not considered 21), even in non American waters. I found that out the last cruise i went on when they handed me a paper that explained the new rules as i was boarding the ship.
good luck and i hope you can figure something out for your spring break

The Canary islands are an excellent choice if you would like to enjoy a wonderful beach vacation with your family, but don't want to spend an exorbitant amount of money just to have some fun while you're on vacation. Due to the economy, more and more people are hoping to save money by taking economical vacations as opposed to spending money on the lavish trips that they might have been accustomed to taking. Don't think that just because you are working within the confines of a fixed budget that you won't be able to have much fun on vacation; instead, look into how villa rentals might be an excellent choice in lodging that will allow you to save some money. Contrary to what you might think, you can actually find a number of appealing Canary Islands villas that will suit your needs and also fall well within your ideal price range.
If you want to find the best deals on villas to use while you are on vacation, the Internet is a great place to start your search. You will soon realize that a large number of websites advertise for these sorts of villas; it's up to you to determine which ones are actually legitimate, and which ones might not be a good idea for your to use. You should never give away your personal information or bank account access if you aren't completely sure if they are, in fact, a legitimate company. You will be quite upset if you lose a substantial amount of money just because you were trying to save a few dollars by dealing with a company that is not honest.
To avoid getting ripped off on-line, do some thorough research on the companies you would like to use before giving them any money or signing a contract to lease a property. Read some of the customer reviews that they should have posted on their website; if a company has lots of satisfied customers, its likely that you will also be happy with the services you receive from them. Additionally, you should make sure the on-line rental company puts you in direct contact with the property management or owners of the villa that you would like to rent. That way, if something goes wrong while you are staying in the rental property, you'll know exactly who to call if you need help or assistance with a problem in the building.
Staying in a villa while you're on vacation can cut costs because you will not have to pay the additional money it would take for your entire family to constantly eat out at restaurants. It can be quite expensive to eat quality food in restaurants the entire time you're away, but if you opt for fast food, you will not be eating a very healthy diet. As an alternative you should try cooking some of your own meals at home as a family. Cooking together can serve as a bonding experience; additionally, you can appreciate the fact that you are eating the exact food that you like. You can swing by a grocery store on your way to the villa to make sure that all your favorite snack foods are immediately close at hand.
The Canary Islands are a great choice for budget-conscious travelers because the cost of living in these islands is quite low when compared to other popular vacation destinations. You will definitely save lots of money by visiting this location because you won't have to spend as much as it would require for you to visit other European destinations. Its quite cheap to get around the island as well; both buses and taxicabs are available at very reasonable rates.
what are some unique foods of antigua and the cayman islands in the caribbeans?
Some of the Cayman foods I have sampled, rum cake soaked with local Tortuga Rum (yummy) You will find both Jamaican and English influences in Cayman food. Cayman fish (turtle, conch, tuna, eel, dolphin, mackerel) is served cayman style with tomatoes, peppers and onion. They make a very hot sauce called "hell sauce" You will find jerk, curry, coconut, plantain, breakfruit, rice and beans in the preparation of cayman foods. (Jamaican influence)
Antigua delicacies are mostly creole dishes. Pepper pot is a stew of beef, pork, dumplings, spices and vegetables (okra) Meals are served with Fungi (fun gee) a mixture of cornmeal, water and okra. I had this delicious goat stew and fish under a pastry cafe. I don't know the official name. You will find delicious pumpkin soup.
Hopefully, someone from these islands will jump in here and tell you more about the unique foods of these two islands. I mostly ate fish while on both islands.
Did you ever worry when traveling about the weather? Most people worry about weather and it can play a major role in making or breaking your vacation.

What is the cheapest time to go to an all inclusive resort in the Caribbean but not during hurricane season?
Had plans for February but heard that it's peak season. We are looking at Punta Cana or Jamaica. Any advice? Thanks!
Well officially, hurricane season in the carribean stretches from June 1st to November 30th. So February is perfect to go. & actually during hurricane season it is rare taht you would even meet up w/ a hurricane. Hurricanes rarely hit Puerto Rico & thats close to Jamaica. Just watch weather before you go, hurricanes are usually tracked much earlier than they hit. Also Feb is good b/c Christmas & New yrs are over. Holiday always causes more travel.. which then increases prices. Orbitz has great prices. Just click 'flexible dates' & you will do good.
Vacations are the perfect getaway. Holidays allow people to de-stress and face their daily routine with increased vigor. When considering a visit to the state of Florida, Orlando stands out as the perfect destination. Holiday trends reveal that travel agents and tours offer multiple senior vacation packages designed to meet the special needs of the elderly.
Orlando senior vacations are organized to safeguard and uphold the interest of senior citizens, as they tend to be different in requirements and preference. These vacations are usually planed for a group of seniors and revolve around group activities and participation. When considering an Orlando senior vacation, it is possible for vacationers to find reasonably priced lodgings and other benefits as a result of the large group discounts that are widely available.
It is advisable to book accommodations in advance and inquire about lodging conditions in order to avoid any hassles upon reaching Orlando. People should determine a budget and choose a package that is affordable. It helps to have adequate funds for other activities and shopping without being financially strained. People may choose from star rated hotels, suites, apartments, cottages and motels. A number of villas and cottages are designed for group accommodations. They offer multiple bathrooms, spacious sitting areas and fully equipped kitchens. Rather than opting for trekking and strenuous physical activities, this special group of tourists can opt for relaxed recreational activities. Holiday planners understand these needs and design tailor- made Orlando senior vacations that are attentive to such requirements. This includes planned rides to Discovery Cove, Orlando's water parks, Sea World, Universal Studios, Walt Disney World and other popular theme destinations. Teeing, boat rides, sight seeing and shopping activities are also included in these packages. These vacations allow senior citizens to share their experiences amongst contemporaries and build everlasting bonds.

Spring still doesn't appear to be on its way in any particular hurry, so as the UK prepares itself for another spell of freezing weather if anyone is determined to see blue skies and feel the suns rays on their skin in the coming months, it seems as if one of the best options would be to book a holiday somewhere else. Holiday prices are still very low so now is a good time to get online and see what's available to break the winter blues.
But where can holidaymakers go and be confident of better weather than the UK? One of the best and closest destinations has to be Lanzarote. As the most easterly Canary Island it has good weather all year round and almost no rainfall. At only four hours flight time, it is the nearest thing Europe has to a Caribbean island. Lanzarote continues to bask in warm weather, with an average temperature of 20C even in the middle of December.
The island is well respected as a tourist hotspot, and it already has a well-developed infrastructure that includes a range of accommodation. At the cheaper end of the market, there is a wide choice of apartments in Lanzarote that have been designed with self-catering in mind.
Most apartment complexes are set within semi-tropical gardens around a communal swimming pool. None will be more than three storeys tall, as strict rules about construction mean that buildings can only be as tall as a palm tree. A good number of these complexes have been refurbished in recent years to bring the accommodation up to date, with modern style furnishings.
For couples who just want to laze on the beach and try the local bars and restaurants in the evenings, an apartment in Lanzarote is ideal. Most have good basic facilities, so that the odd self-catered meal can be easily thrown together. This style of accommodation is also ideal for the more active, sporty types, who spend all day surfing and cycling and crashing out in the evening.
Meanwhile at the other end of the scale there is marvellous selection of private villas available to rent throughout the year in all three of the main resorts, as well as plenty dotted around the countryside. Holiday villas in Lanzarote provide the kind of home-from-home comforts that many holidaymakers prefer these days including internet access, air conditioning and use of a private swimming pool.
Given the huge variety in decor, there are villas to suit every taste. Which in turn means that every visitor ends up with a highly unique holiday in Lanzarote, reflecting the experience they have from start to finish? Whilst many people come principally for the sun, a large majority of visitors to the island often find plenty of activities to keep them amused as well.
Whether that entails a day's sailing or golfing or visiting each of the centres of Art and Culture, Lanzarote has a lot to offer. Its tourist attractions are stylishly individual, having been created by the internationally renowned artist, Cesar Manrique who has left a legacy on the island that will remain for decades to come. These centres range from a Cactus Garden to a Farming Museum, with each detailing some aspect of the lives that many locals have lived over the centuries.
Some of the islands villas come equipped as a home-from-home, with DVD libraries and books to entertain their guests. Others have games rooms, with pool tables and PlayStations. Nearly all have built-in barbecues, as the weather allows al-fresco dining at all times of the year. Private swimming pools are also the norm, with most heated during the winter months to just take the chill off the water, and for garden enthusiasts, the wide range of semi-tropical flowers that thrive in this climate will provide splashes of colour throughout the winter if your villa has its own landscaped garden.

looking to go on a fun vacation! help!?
any suggestions for great vacations for young adults?
four girls in the their early twenties, we are looking to go somewhere fun! open to cruises, resorts, a beach house, anything really. could be caribbean, mexico, FL, cali, anywhere that has fun nightlife, a nice beach, good food and other people looking to party and have fun. we are looking to spend $1200-1700 total. i'd love to hear any suggestions!
last year when we were still in college and broke we went to myrtle beach for spring break which was a really great time, but we are looking to do it up a little better this year
also, is there a website or other resource that shows reviews/suggestions from young adults only? its been a hard search to filter through all the vacations that are aimed towards kids/families/older people. thanks!
I'm hoping that is $1200-$1700 per person.
There is a nice hotel in Pacific Beach. That's the most popular beach in San Diego, Ca. It's right on the beach facing the ocean and is only one block from Mission Bay. That gives you a choice of dealing with calm water or big waves.
Here is a link to the Best Western Blue Sea Lodge-
http://www.bestwestern-bluesea.com/
Get room 105 it would be great for the four of you.
The night life on Garnet Avenue is awesome. Pacific Beach is best party spot in San Diego. Some say the Gaslamp District is, but I find that a little formal because it's in the business section in Downtown San Diego. Pacific Beach is a sandals and shorts type of place. Research more info by checking zip code 92109 for interesting things to do.
Here's a video my wife took several years ago so you can get a feel for the area. Some of the original quality has been diminished, but it gives you a visual. Just wanted to give this answer a personal touch:)
I've been hanging out here for 46+ years.

A Little Bit of the Caribean in Myrtle Beach Oceanview Carefree Living
Picture this: As you enjoy lying on a sandy white beach and listening to the gentle waves roll up on the beach. You also begin to feel how warm the tropical sun and ocean are. You are served a delicious, fruity tropical drink and you are enjoying every minute of it. You are thinking why not this is my vacation. You spend most of the day on the beach, but the sun starts to get hot, you gather up all your beach equipment, and return to the cool Caribbean cruise ship. Where the rest of your day can be overwhelmed by the sights and sounds of the cruise ship. You can enjoy the delicious foods and great entertainment until you are ready to go to bed.
If this all sounds wonderful, the hardest part about your cruise vacation maybe planning it. There are so many place to go and many cruise lines that offer great packages today. With all the offerings from so many different cruise lines to the tropical Caribbeans, you can enjoy a cruise anytime you desire to go. There is no doubt an abundance of Caribbean cruises that you can choose from. You will find that each Caribbean cruise you take will be quite different and wonderful from the one before.
Caribbean cruises are differently a great way to take a vacation, to relax, and to see other parts of the world. Being on a Caribbean cruise means that you can take it any time of the year. Sometimes its knowing when is the best time to go.
The winter months can be the most ideal time to take a Caribbean cruise. Especially between the months of January and May, check with your Caribbean cruise line. It is a great way to get away from the cold and snow. The summer months in the Caribbean can be hot and humid and make it a less attractive for some people to want to take a cruise at this time of year. Much of the second half of the year is considered hurricane season and a lot of people do not like the idea of going on a cruise at this time. However, others enjoy the chance of getting lower prices and enjoy the season at this time of year. If you decide to take your Caribbean cruise doing the spring break remember that you will more than likely be sharing your vacation with more kids, teens and college age students than you would like.
Deciding on where to go in the Caribbeans can be just as difficult as deciding when to go. The Caribbeans are divided into three different areas. Some of the beautiful ports of call you might visit while you are on a cruise on the eastern side of the Caribbeans are Barbados, the Bahamas, and Antiqua. St. Marrten, the US Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts are also some of the most beautiful ports of call you could see on an eastern Caribbean cruise.
These cruises usually begin at Puerto Rico and ending there, giving everyone a chance to explore this lovely tropical island. Ports of call in the western Caribbean are Jamaica, Haiti, and Mexico. If you are looking for some great snorkeling you will find this in the southern Caribbean: the islands Curacao, Aruba, and the British Virgin Islands. This is just a small list of some of the great ports of call in the Caribbean Islands. Take the time to explore all that this area of the world has to offer, choose your date, your Caribbean cruise line and away you go. So relax and have a great wonderful Caribbean Cruise Vacation.
