Focus On St. Lucia Real Estate

Caribbean Real Estate is the new buzz for savvy investors looking for a second home abroad.

St. Lucia is currently poised on the brink of take off and now presents opportunities for those who are inclined to get on board without delay.

Five years ago St. Lucia was a quiet little island fairly far down the Caribbean island chain. St. Lucia has always been a more difficult island to get to compared to her northern neighbours Jamaica, the Bahamas or Antigua, just to name a few.

Then in 2005 Oprah Winfrey's Magazine, Oprah, listed St. Lucia and her Pitons as the number 1 place that everyone should visit in their lifetime, and St. Lucia suddenly sprung to life!

Literally overnight St. Lucia went from having one and a half golf courses to suddenly fourteen courses earmarked for construction as disclosed by a recent unconfirmed report.

And these are no ordinary golf courses, but instead signature greens sporting the names of Jack Nicholas and Greg Norman, among others. And as if that weren't enough, a number of these courses are just the anchor to the luxury properties that they are a part of. Properties such as Le Paradis, on St. Lucia's previously under-utilized east coast, Windjammer Landing's 'Private Resident's Club', Raffles, and The Ritz-Carlton St. Lucia, just to name a few.

So come with me as I share just a few of the reasons why the perfect time to buy Island Real Estate here in St. Lucia, just might be now:

1. St. Lucian real estate is still relatively inexpensive and set to appreciate significantly as a consequence of certain excellent initiatives undertaken by the previous government and now being continued by the current administration. Primary among these are St. Lucia's much improved road network, improved water distribution, especially to the north of the island and St. Lucia Electricity Service's recent strategic expansion of its electricity delivering capabilities.

2. St. Lucia is a very stable island nation practicing the Westminster Model of Parliamentary Democracy.

3. St. Lucia's laws allow for the easy acquisition of property by foreigners through the issuance of an 'Alien's Land Holding License' and property is available for FREE HOLD purchase.

4. The fact that such a diversity of massive projects has been undertaken here in St. Lucia is a clear indication that both the investors as well as both of St. Lucia's political parties are committed to St. Lucia's growth and development through this new wave of luxury accommodations.

5. It is important to note that the preceding points have all contributed to the creation of a climate of opportunity the likes of which has never existed in St. Lucia before.

6. With the American dollar losing value, St. Lucia has suddenly become a fantastic safe haven for capital relocation, as the appreciation of prime St. Lucia real estate becomes the perfect hedge against a weakening dollar.

7. And for the European, Canadian, British and Far Eastern currencies that have suddenly gained value, real estate in St. Lucia has never been as attractive, not to mention easy to acquire.

8. Suddenly it is clear that whether your currency is gaining or losing value, St. Lucian real estate is a perfect vehicle in which to park your money, not only to protect it from currency revaluation, but also to facilitate its easy and effortless appreciation.

9. And here are 2 added benefits - With all of the resorts being built in St. Lucia we will soon attract a class of visitor who wishes to stay at a private villa that's close to these world class resorts. And this, in and of itself will create an opportunity for you to build an income property that suddenly adds more value to your already well parked money.

10. And as if that weren't good enoug - How about purchasing 2 adjoining properties and building one villa that will be your private residence here in Paradise, then building a second one that will be rented. By utilizing this strategy you could, quite literally have Free Residence here and so make St. Lucia truly your Paradise Island!

On our cruise up the coast of Alaska we visited Haines which is a short trip north of Skagway. It is one of the prettier towns and one with a road connection to the Alaska highway. It is next to the coastal mountain range and lies on a wooded peninsula. Here we were to go on the Bald Eagle Preserve Float trip through the Chilcat valley. We were kitted out with boots and life jackets and seated eight to an inflated raft. "Where is the outboard engine?" I asked. In fact the water is too shallow and we were guided down the swiftly flowing river using oars. The shallowness of the river causes the salmon to be visible to the eagles, which are present in large numbers. Soon there was one at the water's edge. Personally I think "bald" is an uncomplimentary description of such a splendid bird. The white feathers over its head and neck give it a majestic appearance. They stand out in contrast to the black feathers over the wings and body.

Every so often the raft would ground on the pebbles and our guide became very energetic; heaving us off onto deeper water as we jumped up and down on the raft to release it. We passed under an eagle sitting 10 metres above us on a branch. The raft was anything but still and rotated here and there giving everyone a 360 degree view of the magnificent scenery.

Passengers not taking the excursions would find the towns suitable for walking. Alternatively there was a full range of activities on board. Bingo; entertainers in the bar or wine tasting in the Lounge. The fully equipped gymnasium was open from 7 am to 8 pm. Enthusiasts were to be seen exercising before breakfast even if they had been at the Disco until 3 o'clock in the morning. Our evenings were often spent at the theatre, the song and dance revues were as practiced and polished as I have seen anywhere. The acoustics also were excellent, you could hear every word in any part of the theatre.

The Hubbard Glacier was the event in the afternoon of the next day. We ventured slowly up to the ice blue glacier. Around us were miniature icebergs caused by the ice breaking off the end of the glacier as it slid down over the rock. Some were large enough to float a human being. The glacier is six miles wide and 75 miles long. It glows with this pure mellow blue which is characteristic of the light reflected from compressed ice. The deck was crowded with people looking for the photo opportunity. The scene had its own particular kind of beauty not seen elsewhere on this cruise, or any other in my experience.

Kechitan was our last stop before returning home. We went on the Mountain Lake Canoe Adventure for two and a half hours. It was not an excursion for the keen canoeist but is well suited for the first timer.

We could have taken the cruise in association with a tour of the Rocky Mountains but for us that would be another time.

In the TV ad for Royal Caribbean cruises, what goup is singing the song in the background?

It sounds like the Stones and it sounds as near as I can tell like they are saying "love for life".
Wow I used to listen to Iggy all the time in the 70's.
Now to go grab the song.

The song is "Lust for Life" by Iggy Pop (1977)

caribbean islands facts

The top 10 vacation islands varies according to the individual's preference. The top ten vacation islands may also vary from one author to another. Before starting, ask yourself this question, what you really look for in a vacation island? As for myself, I like islands with good environmental landscape and have a variety in its scenery. Now let me start on my list of top 10 vacation islands.

My first choice would definitely be Hawaii because it provides spectacular beaches, amazing waterfalls, it has a rainforest and most of all seeing the erupting volcano nearby is a spectacular phenomenon to watch and who can forget the hola dance. I'm pretty certain that everybody knows it.

The next would be Bermuda of the Caribbean Islands. It has a creamy white beach with a touch of pink on it, amazing forest and its magnificent green waves that splashes in the seashore is amazing.

The third island on my list would be Phuket in Thailand. They have magnificent beaches and also they have an elephant for an added tourist attraction.

Fourth on my list would be San Juan in Caribbean. The architectural structure is an art in itself. Its Spanish influenced building and cobblestoned streets best complement each other.

The island that is on fifth place would definitely go to Palawan Island in the Philippines. It offers not only its beaches but it has miles Long River in one of its caves. They also have many resorts which is definitely world class.

The sixth place would be the Maldives of the Indian Ocean. Its blue clear waters and its beaches is magnificent to watch. It is somewhat unspoiled and fresh on the eyes. Being in the island makes you feel calm and at peace.

The island that is on seventh place would be Santorini, Greece. The sunset is definitely something to look forward. It probably has the best sunset. It has also its historical appeal which makes it even more interesting.

The eight place in my list would go to Bora Bora of French Polynesia. Including their beautiful beaches, one of their main attractions is their natives which showcase their ethnicity.

The ninth would be Sicily, Italy. Do you remember the God Father? Yes, the mafia started in that place. Moreover, they really do have good pasta, wineries and do not forget the spaghetti. The people there is very cordial and interesting.

The last and definitely not the least would belong to Fraser Island in Australia. It has a magnificent rainforest. It has also various exotic animals like the dingoes just wondering around and most of all, whale watching, is something the tourist are looking forward.

These are my personal top 10 vacation islands. You probably have your personal choice but I hope my list hit some of your favorites. Remember that the best island depends on your taste. Your decision should be based on your own needs and not because somebody says so. When you know what you want. It will be easier for you to decide on what and where your vacation should be.

Are all Caribbean islands considered to be in North America?

I have always been taught that all islands in the Caribbean are in North America.

I want to know if this the consensus among Geographers, or if this is still the topic of some debate. I understand that the borders between continents are often purely political. However, it seems to me quite silly to me that islands such as Curaçao and Trinidad are considered to be North American (at least according to Wikipedia and my 7th grade geography teacher), despite the fact that they lie just off the South American continent, and are to the best of my knowledge located on that plate.

What are your thoughts?

The Caribbean is part of North America, but not the United States. The only commonwealth of the United States in the Carribean is Puerto Rico, Guam and Virgin Islands.

The Cayman Islands are an archipelago in the northwest Caribbean Sea. It is made up of Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. Grand Cayman is the most populated of the three islands. The islands are situated south of Cuba and west of Jamaica. The Cayman Islands are noted for its beautiful beaches, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, and other attractions.  Occasionally, The Cayman Islands are affected by tropical storms and hurricanes, although a direct hit is rare.

Rainfall

The wet season lasts a little over six months. It usually begins in mid May and lasts through November. Rainfall amounts are generally between 5 1/2 inches and 8 1/2 inches during this period. The heaviest rain is the result of active tropical waves during the late summer and early autumn. Keep in mind that a tropical storm or hurricane can drop much heavier rainfall amounts.

The dry season runs from December through April with one and a half to two inches of rain on average. December is a little wetter with closer to three inches of rain. The Cayman Islands are affected by cold fronts which can bring rain this time of year as well as cooler weather. Rainfall in general is not as heavy with cold fronts when compared to the tropical rains of the summer and autumn.

Temperatures

Temperatures throughout the year are quite uniform and are tempered by the Caribbean Sea. The summer is the hottest time of year with highs in the upper 80's on average. This is not very hot compared with many of the Caribbean Islands where the average highs are in the low 90's at this time of year. The overnight lows only cool down to near 80 due to the fact that the water temperatures are usually in the low 80s or even warmer. The coolest time of year is the winter where average highs are in the low 80's. Low temperatures drop only to the low 70's.

Travel Weather Summary

The Cayman Islands are a delightful group of islands that have wonderful beaches and snorkeling. The weather pattern is controlled by a wet and dry season. Vacationers wishing to minimize their chances of seeing rain should plan to visit during the winter and early spring. Temperatures are warm and don't change very much for the exception of an occasional cold front during the winter where temperatures may be cool enough for a jacket. The Cayman Islands are in the Caribbean hurricane belt and travelers should stay informed on tropical weather information, especially during the hurricane season.

Central America or Caribbean - Best Place for Adrenaline Rushing Outdoor Activities?

A few of my friends and I would like to take a trip to some place in Central America or one of the Caribbean Islands or Mexico. Any suggestions for a fun, party place for university kids? What's the best place for parties and fun activities (like quading, zip line, rock climbing, surfing, jet skiing, rafting, bungy)?

South America--->>Colombia. Colombia is the most bio diverse country in the world per square kilometer. In Colombia you can do everything you said. Surf, Ski, Hike, go rock climbing, etc.

Cartagena is a very touristic city with gorgeous beaches and a great night life with lots of night clubs (if u are in that kinda thing)
Bogota is more like musuems and culture.
In Manizales you can take a drive to the "Nevado de el Ruiz" where you can go skiing since it is a snow mountain.

Santa Marta is a city which has beaches, a park where you can go hiking, and even if it sound crazy, there is a snow mountian nearby.

Colombia is a great idea, check it out. (and it has beauiful girls) ;)

good luck.

When looking to eat out in Antigua, you'll find menus and choices to suit all tastes and desires. You'll also find something to suit all budgets.

This is Stay-in-Antigua's mini-guide to our favourite restaurants and eateries on this beautiful Caribbean island.

________________________

Restaurants and eateries in Antigua offer a wide range of cuisine to suit most palates. Those located in tourist areas or hotels offer mainly European, American and fusion options, with a few local and traditional dishes thrown in for good measure. Dishes are made largely from local ingredients.

As with all of the Caribbean islands, seafood choices are plentiful, with Antigua being renowned for its Red Snapper, Lobster and Mahi-Mahi.

Outside resorts and tourist areas, restaurants are generally low-key and laid back. Service is friendly, but can be exceedingly slow. On the upside, you'll have lots of time to sample island life and mix with the charming locals while waiting for your meal to arrive.

Although variety is somewhat limited for vegetarians, the choices are growing and most menus will carry one or two vegetarian dishes, made from ingredients such as Okra, Breadfruit and Pumpkin. Just to be careful, it is advisable to ring ahead, or even stop in at your chosen eatery to check out the vegetarian options.

If you're staying in a hotel or resort and want to try something truly different, why not ask the hotel staff where you can go to sample some local 'Ital dishes' - the traditional fare of the Rastafarians. Ital food is natural and vital, and very delicious. It is free from chemicals and contains no animal products. Ital dishes can contain rice, peas and beans, vegetables, sweet potatoes, coconut milk, soups, cabbage, cornmeal, pumpkin, cinnamon, bananas, okra and a multitude of other natural ingredients. They are ideal for vegetarians and vegans.

Most restaurants in Antigua open for lunch from noon, with dinner menus becoming available from 6pm-7pm. Many smaller restaurants operate based on how busy they are, and may close early if business is slow, so do bear this in mind. It is advisable to make reservations at restaurants, up to 2 days in advance.

In restaurants, you should tip between 10% - 15%. Service charges are not included on your bill.

Here is Stay in Antigua's personal recommendations for places to eat in Antigua.

Vyviens - The Blue Waters Hotel

For a wide choice of Caribbean and International dishes, try Vyviens restaurant, upstairs in the Blue Waters Hotel, St Johns. Offering an al a Carte menu, and some of the friendliest staff we've met, Vyvien's offers a truly elegant evening. The décor is nautical, with ship brassware, model ships and nautical equipment adorning the walls and ceiling, elegantly illuminated. You will also be treated to the chilled out tones of a live jazz band and singer, playing downstairs by the pool. You absolutely must try the lobster!

The Home Restaurant

Described as the 'Best Restaurant in Antigua' by BBC TV, Home restaurant, owned and run by Chef Carl Thomas and his wife Rita is on Gambles Terrace in St Johns. The restaurant is the converted childhood home of Chef Carl, and serves traditional West Indian dishes, made from fresh, local ingredients. Excellent choices are the Fish Cakes with Papaya-Pimiento Sauce as an appetiser, and the Snapper filet Stuffed with Crab Meat served with Lobster Sauce.

Calypso Restaurant - Amaryllis Hotel

The Calypso Restaurant, located within the Amaryllis Hotel, offers open air dining in beautiful gardens, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Calypso offers some of the best you'll find in traditional and contemporary Antiguan cuisine, as well as international dishes.

The Calypso Restaurant has received recommendations by the New York Times, Conde Nast, and also featured on the US's BET channel.

Sticky Wicket - Stanford Cricket Ground

The Sticky Wicket embraces and exemplifies the Caribbean passion for cricket. You'll find yourself surrounded in memorabilia from years of cricket tradition, history and sportsmanship, in this most excellent example of sports bars. Located at the attractive Stanford Cricket Ground, just across from the V.C. Bird International airport, Sticky Wicket offers barbecue, burgers, combos, seafood, sandwiches and pasta among its wide menu selection. Try the Beamer Crispy Jerked Wings with Antigua's own 'Susie's Hot Sauce', and the Batsman's Paradise Barbecue Brisket Sandwich. Sticky Wicket is a great place to eat, whether you're a cricket enthusiast, a lover of hearty dishes or simply waiting for your flight.

Pizzas in Paradise - Redcliffe Quay

Located in an old 18th Century rum warehouse in Redcliffe Quay, and popular with tourists, Pizzas in Paradise offers a wide variety of pizzas made from the freshest ingredients. As well as pizzas, diners can choose from sub sandwiches, fresh salads, fruit crushes and cocktails. Diners can choose from eating indoors with views of the traditional wood beams, archways and photo-portraits of musicians, or eating on the terrace enjoying the breeze off the nearby harbour. Thursday nights offer live entertainment and sports enthusiasts can enjoy the bar's gigantic satellite TV screen all week.

______________________

I hope that our mini review has whetted your appetite. If you visit Antigua, do indulge in some of the wonderful cuisine that the island has to offer. And don't just restrict yourself to your hotel's restaurant - go out and try some of the island's local restaurants to add a little home-grown spice and excitement to your dining experience.

Bon appetit, mon!

What species of bird is this?

I recently moved to the Caribbean island of St. Kitts from the U.S. I've been trying to identify the local birds (without the aid of a field guide) and I'm having trouble with one species in particular. The males are black with rufus colored breast feathers and the females are a sort of grey.

Here is a picture of a male that I took a couple of weeks ago: http://www.flickr.com/photos/imrahilnamonsul/4301276464/

It's a greater antillean bullfinch.
