I live in a cold climate, so I always cruise in the winter, usually in February. As a result of this consistency, I have a kind of ritual that I always observe when I am preparing for a cruise.
First, I always select my clothes in the Autumn, that way, I do not have to put away as much for the winter. For example, instead of putting my summer clothes in a box, I put them into my suitcase. I also have specific garments that I wear a lot when I cruise, so I already know what goes in the suitcase and it takes much less time.
In addition, I have a permanent list that I keep safely filed away, and it gets pulled out after Christmas.
Which brings me to my second point. I like to have all of my paperwork settled between Christmas and New Years Day. Christmas is a busy time for everyone so I do not fight it. A day or two after Christmas I will search for my passport, get some cash and put it in an envelope (since I refuse to use a credit card for a vacation!), book my shore excursions, if any and complete my cruise registration online.
Which brings me to my third point. I always complete my registration online. I still believe that this speeds the embarkation process. It certainly makes me feel better knowing that all of my paperwork is in order even before I leave home. I also have a certain bag that I use for my carry-on all the time, and that is all I use it for. That way, I have a place to put all of my paper work where I know it will be.

I have questions about Jamaica for our 25th Anniversary.?
We recently celebrated our 25th Anniversary. We never had a real honeymoon and would like to take one in the Caribbean at the beginning of June. I have looked at information about Jamaica but it's a little overwhelming. We are 45 & 51. I am disabled so hopefully these locations are handicap accessible. This is what we’re looking for;
-Timeframe (first full week of June)
-All inclusive resort
-Snorkel, Kayaking & Golf
-Entertainment such as; Shows or a Casino
-Shopping nearby
-Not too far from the airport if possible
-Safety is a MUST!!
-NO Nudist areas!!
Any feedback you can give would be most appreciated. I'm looking forward to hearing about your experiences in Jamaica. Thanks!
Thanks everyone for the feedback!
Sandals resort is Jamaica would be your best bet.
Here is why:
-It's couple's only and caters to couples looking for an idyllic romantic vacation.
-Super all-inclusive (and by that I mean EVERYTHING is included... see link below)
-Snorkeling included (you can snorkel up to 4 times a day on planned snorkeling excursions that leave from the resort on the resort's boat... at no extra cost).
-Kayaks are available, and included in the room price.
-Golf is included in the room price (see link below)
-Sandals Montego Bay or Sandals Royal Caribbean would be your best bet if you want close to shopping and close to the airport. Sandals Royal Caribbean is great because it has a private island included too (see links below)
-Safety is a given since the resort won't let anyone just wander in. The beaches are private and there is a guard on either end of the property keeping people who aren't guests out and keeping track of guests who leave.
-Sandals does not allow nudity.
-They have handicapped accessible rooms on the ground floor.

Thinking about going to the Bahamas- other choices?
Want to go to the Atlantis, might stay (1/2 the price) at the Comfort Suites Paradise Island across the street as you can still use all the facilities of the Atlantis. I've been reading about some violent crimes lately targeting tourists (Machete and Shot gun!)- targeted the Segway riders from the cruise ship. Is it safe to go to this place- and wonder into Nassau to check out the markets. If not, are there any other Caribbean destinations that are better? We are leaving from the East Coast- near NYC around June. We want that tropical paradise type of place with great snorkeling- going for a week.
THANKS!
Yes, Crime has been increasing in the Bahamas due to the recession but the segway stuff was an isolated incident. It really has never happened before..... You would be on Paradise Island which is totally safe. Venturing into Nassau isn't really dangerous for tourists, just don't go too far east on bay street( the main street in Nassau, it gets rougher the farther you go.) especially at night. besides that, you'll be fine. If you really want tropical paradise you should go to the out islands of the Bahamas( The exumas are great) Nassau really is like the New York city of the Bahamas and full of cruise ship people and lots of tourists, while the out islands are rural and have way better snorkeling and scuba.)
However, if you really want an awesome tropical paradise and are fine with a 4-5 hour flight from New York, I would go to Dominica in the eastern Caribbean. The most untouched island in the Caribbean and no tourists unlike Nassau... St. Lucia is a little more touristy but as pretty.

Good book for my Boyfriend (based on his interests) to read on vacation??
We're going to the islands in a few days and I know that if he doesnt have a book to read he'll get bored on the beach. Problem is, he really doesn't read. I know that he read some mafia books and enjoyed them. These are his interests:
- Mafia, old gangster stuff
- Pirates (loves Pirates of the Caribbean)
- Restaurant Stuff - Hes a chef/owner (read Kitchen Confidential and loved it)
- Fishing/Hunting
- Loves comedy - Will Ferrell, etc.
Any ideas?? I want to surprise him with something good!
We are huge work-aholics. This vacation is to relax on the beach. We're staying on St.Johns in the Virgin Islands where my parents live. The vacation will be a lot of swimming, snorkeling, hiking, sailing and yes.. laying on the beach and napping/reading! (and some beach scrabble) lol
If he's into fishing/hunting... Patrick McManus

Kid Camping from Aaaaaaaaaiiiiiiieeeeee to Zip!

A cruise can be a great way to spend time with family or loved ones, and a wonderful opportunity to unwind and experience new and exciting adventures. The key to ensuring your cruise lives up to your own unique expectations is to understand the basics of cruising and all of the opportunities and experiences it can offer.
If you've never taken a cruise before - or even if you have, and just want to know a little more about them - this article will help identify some of the tips and strategies you can use to help make sure your cruise turns out to be a trip of a lifetime.
Consider the Destination
Cruises travel all over the world, from the Caribbean to Alaska waters to Europe, and many, many more locations worldwide. Take some time to consider where you'd like to visit - remember, there will be shore excursions - and then look at the cruises offered in those areas.
Your travel agent can be an invaluable resource in helping you identify the cruises that are most popular in the areas you'd like to travel to, and can also point you in the right direction for locations that have proven especially popular for those cruising for the first time, or for those seeking specific types of locales.
Consider the Length of the Cruise
Especially if you've never gone on a cruise before, you may want to select a cruise of a shorter duration. Also, you'll need to consider the amount of time you have for your vacation. If all you can spare is a week, your choices will be determined by that time, and your travel agent can steer you toward the best value for the time you have to spend.
If you have a longer period of time - say, two weeks - your options will be broader, but you should consider whether you want to visit a lot of ports, or select a more leisurely cruise with fewer destinations but more time to unwind onboard.
Consider the Atmosphere
While many cruise lines used to require passengers to dress for dinner, for instance, or set structured times for meals and other on-board activities, many of today's cruise lines are much less structured. Be sure to ask, though, when booking about the general on-board atmosphere.
Consider the Size of the Ship
Many cruise lines offer both huge ships that can accommodate a couple thousand vacationers, as well as smaller ships. Since much of your time will be spent onboard, it's a good idea to consider which type of atmosphere is most attractive to you. Be aware, though, that smaller ships often offer fewer amenities than their larger cousins.
Consider Family-Friendly Activities
If cruising with your children, ask your travel agent about the best cruise lines for families. Some offer activities to appeal to families, with special kids-only activities, while other cruise lines or specific cruise venues may be more appropriate for older children, couples, singles, or even seniors. Because families may often have specific travel needs or expectations, your travel agent can be a great source of information about cruises that offer all the adventures you and your family could ever want.
Find the Right Travel Agent
Take your time to select the best travel agent for your needs. Be sure to choose a travel agency that has established ties to the cruise industry, to get the best prices and ensure the best experiences for your vacation dollar. Travel agencies are tapped into the cruise industry, and can guide you to the best deals, as well as identify the perfect experiences for your vacation needs.
Determine the Specific Price
Ask about what's included in the price. Most cruises offer meals and some onboard amenities, while others are all-inclusive, which means your drinks, snacks, and even tips are also included. Other cruise lines offer package deals that include the cost of airfare or shore excursions at discounted rates. When booking your cruise, be sure you understand what is included and what is not.
Inquire about Food
Also ask about meal options. While some cruises offer specific meals at set times, other offer all-day eating options that can allow you to feel less locked in. Additionally, some cruise lines offer both formal and casual dining options.
Speaking of snacks... some cruises offer packages for wine, soda, or other beverages that involve a flat fee per day or per cruise, and allow you a specific amount of wine - or sometimes an unlimited amount of soda and other beverages - throughout the cruise. These discounts can result in substantial savings over the cost of buying each drink separately, so ask your travel agent about these package deals.
With a wide range of activities and exciting, often exotic shore adventures, cruises can be an ideal choice for any age group, from families with young children to couples and singles to seniors. Choose a good travel agent and pepper him or her with questions to be sure you get the most enjoyment from your next cruise vacation.

can you cancel the third person in your room on a cruise?
We haven't paid our balance yet on royal caribbean, and our third person backed out at the last minute. The only thing they paid for was their airfare, not even a deposit, only the first two in the room can. So can we just cancel the third person and continue with our reservation and just pay for the first two? How does this work?
You shouldn't have any problem, as long as you are far enough away from the sail date, there shouldn't be any penalties. Don't hang about, get it cancelled as soon as possible. If you booked with a TA, do it through them. if you booked direct with RC call them.

Vacationing with your kids sounds like a great idea to create more meaningful family memories and engage in activities that can increase the amount of quality time you spend together. But in reality, finding a venue that keeps kids engaged and active - and lets parents enjoy the vacation experience, too - can be daunting.
Fortunately, today's cruise lines offer a wealth of vacation opportunities for families of all sizes, and for kids of all ages, from distracted and energetic preschoolers to hard to please teens. With a predictable pricing structure, exciting on-board activities, and unique shore excursions, cruise lines that cater to families and their individual and group needs abound.
Whether your child loves art, lives for video games, or enjoys movies, videos and music, there's something for everyone on today's cruise lines. Onboard swimming pools and other activities keep kids engaged - many cruise lines even offer water parks, surf pools and rock climbing activities, all without leaving the comfort of the ship.
Cruise lines that cater to families also offer a variety of food and drinks, and usually have flexible dining schedules and all-inclusive package deals that keep kids satisfied without emptying mom and dad's wallet. In addition, many kids' activities are supervised, age-regulated, and for kids only - meaning mom and dad are free to enjoy other activities while knowing their kids are being cared for and watched over.
For these reasons - and a lot more - many families are turning to cruises when planning their family vacations. If you think a cruise could be ideal for you and your family, consider the following tips when selecting and booking your cruise.
Check the Cabin Layout
Some cruises offer large rooms that can accommodate up to five or six people, while others offer adjoining rooms, allowing both kids and parents a modicum of privacy. If you're traveling with teens, ask your travel agent about cruise lines that offer discounts on separate rooms for them. Many cruise lines today are offering family suites, which feature sleeping rooms and a common living room area, all in one suite layout.
Ask about Cruise Lines that Are Specifically for Families
While Disney Cruises may be best known for catering to younger kids, Royal Caribbean and Carnival go all out to please kids of all ages, especially teens, with Internet cafes, dance clubs and video game arcades that encourage socializing. Other cruise lines may be less well known for their family themes, but may still offer a strong component of family activities, and may also feature specific cruises featuring family-themed fun and activities. A travel agent with strong cruise connections can be an invaluable resource here.
Find the Right Travel Agent
Speaking of travel agents, be sure to choose one that is familiar with family cruises and all they can offer. You want to choose an agent or agency - online or in person - that can find you deals specifically tailored to the entertainment needs - and budget needs - of your family. Choose an agent that is well established and has a good reputation among travelers.
If you're working on expanding your family - that is, if you're pregnant - ask about medical restrictions. Many cruises will not book to parties including a woman in the third trimester of pregnancy.
Also, be sure to ask you agent if your kids need a photo ID? Even if it isn't required, it can be a good idea. Also be sure to have proper identification for all members of your family for international border crossings.
Ask about Cancellation Policies
Unfortunately, kids are prone to illness and injury, and it may be that just as you and your family are packing to go on a fabulous cruise, your son or daughter breaks out in chicken pox. Be sure to ask your travel agent about possible cancellation penalty fees, and consider purchasing trip cancellation insurance (your travel agent can help you get the best rates for this invaluable service, too).
Research the Fees
Unexpected or inflated costs and fees are one of the prime factors parents worry about when embarking on a traditional land vacation. Many cruises offer all-inclusive - or nearly all-inclusive - package deals that take the financial worry out of the picture, and are one of the major reasons why cruises have become so popular among families in recent years. Ask about what's included in the cost of your cruise, and be sure to ask about tipping policies. Some cruises include gratuities, and some do not.
With a full array of on-board activities and shore excursions, coupled with predictable pricing and exciting experiences for all, it's no wonder cruises have grown to become one of the most popular vacation options among families today. A little preplanning and an understanding of the options available to you and your family will ensure your cruise is the best it can be.
Well, I just got off my 3rd cruise with Carnival. I think I want to try something new. Im still kind of pissed how I booked a suite and got a balcony cabin only. For all of you RC cruisers out there I have a few questions before I book.
In Carnival pretty much everything less beverages, and souvenirs is included. On RC is there the same amount or more inclusion?
How personable are the crew?
How is the food ?
Thanks for the help; as I don't want to book in the dark.
Ive been on one carnival cruise and one r.c. cruise. I liked r.c. better. The food was alot better, more activities, more variety, better cabins, the staff was great, no complaints ! RC didn't charge you for anything that carnival didn't. I must say though, on carnival they had a gift basket with goodies for us when we arrived in our suite, rc didn't have anything waiting for us ! But still i prefer rc. Only thing carnival had that was better were their veggie burgers lol. RC had johny rockets (free of charge), they had a pizzeria and bakery (free of charge) open 24/7, the food was good i really have no complaints, we had a ton of entertainment to keep us busy too way more than carnival. I just liked the interior of rc better, the decorations, the lighting, the promenade, just really nice ! I love the balcony in the suites, when you walk out, its' covered so you have way more privacy, you also are looking out into the ocean with no obstructed view.
