The Moroccan city of Marrakech, also known as the Pearl of the South or the Ochre City, is the third largest city in Morocco and lies at the foothills of the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains. As one of the five Imperial Cities of Morocco, Marrakech has a long and fascinating history, dating back to its foundation by Princess Zaynab in 1070. The city not only has the largest traditional market or souk in Morocco, but also offers a variety of astounding architectural sites that are not to be missed. Among the many charms and jewels of Marrakech, here is a list of 5 of the finest ones:
The Bahia Palace
The construction of the Bahia Palace was commissioned in 1880 by the Grand Vizier Sidi Moussa and is said to be the fruit of his folly. Successively at the service of Sultans Moulay Hassan and Moulay Abd el-Aziz, Sidi Moussa was the actual master of the Kingdom of Morocco.
The Grand Vizier commanded the erection of this palace, which consists of no less than 160 rooms, for one of her official concubines, thus the Bahia Palace meaning "Palace of the Beautiful Woman".
The estate consists in a succession of luxuriant apartments and courtyards. The sumptuousness and elegance of the interior gardens are incomparable, and the ornaments and decorations are simply sublime. Moreover, the property is surrounded by an 8 hectares garden.
The beauty of the Bahia Palace is a remarkable testimony of 19th century Eastern architecture.
Saadian Tombs
The Saadian tombs are the sole remains that wear witness to the power and refinement of the Saadian Dynasty, which ruled over South Morocco during its Golden Age, from 1554 to 1659.
At the dawn of the 18th century, Sultan Moulay Ismail had already decided to make all the traces of the magnificence of this dynasty disappear by commanding the destruction of all the remaining vestiges. But he did not dare committing the sacrilege of destroying their burial places and commanded that a wall be erected at the entrance of the necropolis. It was only in 1917 that the secret location of the tombs was unveiled.
The most stunning and prestigious mausoleum is the Hall of the Twelve Columns. This hall houses the tomb of the Sultan's son, Ahmad Al Mansur, where the stele is in finely worked cedar wood and stucco work. The tombs are made of white and blue-grey Italian Carrara marble. Some of the tombs bear poetic epitaphs, such as that of Princess Zohra's, where one can read: "Here is the tomb of the noble dame, new moon, marvel of virtues".
El-Badi Palace
Dar el-Badi, the Palace of the Incomparable was erected in 1578. It was the Saadian sovereign Ahmad Al Mansur, son of Sultan Moulay Ismail, who decided to build it as a celebration of his victory over the Portuguese Army after the battle of Ksar Al Kebir or Battle of Three Kings in 1578. It took 25 years, from 1578 to 1608, to complete the building of this sumptuous palace, and the richest and finest materials were used in the decoration of its 360 rooms of the princely estate.
The magnificence of the El Badi Palace is now ancient history, since it became one of the many victims of the will of the Alaouite sovereign Moulay Ismail, the "Warrior King", of destroying any trace of the Saadian heritage. But you will certainly be amazed just by exploring the immense esplanade dug with basins and surrounded by fortifications, a design inspired by the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. Also, you will be able to admire the skill of Moroccan craftsmanship in the wooden work on the Koutoubia minbar exhibited in one of the refurbished pavilions.
Jemaa El Fna Square
The Jemaa El Fna square is the biggest square in the African continent and remains the geographical, social and cultural centre of the medina of Marrakech. For centuries, this square has been, and still is, a meeting and exchanging point of the populations of the North and South of this part of the country.
Nowadays, despite all cultural erosions and mutations, the Jemaa El Fna square is the meeting place of Berber merchans, travelers, peddlers, writers, and artists, and brings together all the traditional trades and crafts - public scribes, fortune tellers, storytellers, tooth strippers, herbalists, etc.- and entertainers -snake charmers, acrobats, musicians, dancers, fire-eaters, etc.
Ben Youssef Madrasa
The Ben Youssef madrasa or « school » is one of the jewels of the Arab-Andalousian architecture of Marrakech. The current structure of this Islamic college was erected around 1570 during the rule of the Saadian dynasty and was refurbished in 1950. At the peak of its splendor, the Ben Youssef madrasa could house up to 900 students in its 150 cells arranged around a courtyard richly carved in cedar, marble and stucco. The carvings contain no representation of humans or animals as required by Islam, and consist entirely of inscriptions and geometric patterns. Due to its characteristic architecture, this sacred building is the largest madrasa in the whole Maghreb.

A closed-loop cruise refers to a cruise that begins and ends in the same city. Since the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative now requires U.S. citizens traveling by land or sea to Bermuda, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean region to possess a valid passport, there is some confusion as to whether a passport is required for a closed-loop cruise. This article seeks to clear up the confusion.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection does not require American citizens on closed-loop cruises to present a passport. However, they do require passengers to present both proof of citizenship and proof of identity in order to depart and enter the country. Examples of acceptable proof of citizenship include an original or certified copy of a birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization or a passport card. Acceptable photo ID could be an enhanced drivers license (EDL).
This does not mean that a passport is not necessary. It only means that you do not need one to exit or re-enter the United States. You may still be required to obtain a passport if the countries you plan to visit during the cruise require that visitors have one.
Just as the United States government has waived this requirement, many countries that are popular destinations for cruises have also waived the requirement. For example, cruise passengers do not presently need a passport to visit either Belize or the Honduras as long as their cruise does not end there.
While a passport is neither required to visit most cruise destinations nor to enter the United States, it is highly recommended by both the U.S. Department of State and major cruise lines.
Many cruise passengers have reported confusion at ports both in the U.S. and abroad when they attempted to enter or exit without a passport. Apparently, not all port officials are aware of this exception.
In summary, you are not required to present a passport in order to exit or enter the United States if you are a passenger of a closed-loop cruise. You should check the foreign entry requirements for the countries you plan to visit during your cruise. Even if you are not legally required to have a passport, you may want to get one just to avoid any possible confusion.

A Caribbean cruise provides you with the option of true relaxation, both with the slow pace it takes and the host of lavish facilities available on board the Cruise liners that have been designed to pander to your every need. In addition to being pampered aboard these luxury liners, there is also the opportunity to explore the virgin islands of the Caribbean and imbibe its rich culture while being surrounded by some of the best natural beauty this world has to offer.
Caribbean cruises come in a huge array of cruise packages with variations in destinations and pricings as well as duration of stay. You can choose almost any sort of duration as per your convenience ranging from a two day package if you just wish to sail off on the weekend or even one that involves over fourteen days of blissful sailing.
The Caribbean cruise liners make many stops during their travel at various Caribbean islands allowing you to truly experience the beauty of the Caribbean. The ports of call of course depend on the particular Caribbean cruise chosen as the routes through the vast territory vary.
Grenada is one of the ports of call and is known as the spice island, like most of the Caribbean islands it is lush with beauty and offers a number of secluded harbors to be enjoyed.
Guana Island on the eastern Caribbean is a beautiful place to relax with its soft sandy beaches and tropical waters. Snorkelling on Dominica can be an amazing activity, especially near the bubbling volcanic activity of Soufriere. The beautiful islands of St. Bart's, Antigua, St. Thomas, the French island of Guadeloupe, the Dutch island of Saba and many others are ports of call on various cruises. The Grand Cayman Island is one of the most popular stops in the western Caribbean as it is very popular because it has some of the best shopping in the Caribbean.
A Caribbean Cruise is a most spectacular way to explore the Caribbean and enjoy all it has to offer.

Shortest runway in the world?

Mention the word "Bahamas", and immediately you will think of a dream vacation or a paradise getaway lined with powdery-white beaches and crystal clear blue waters. You will also probably conjure up good thoughts about the Bahamanian people, what with their friendly smiles, warm, ready-to-please hospitality, and interesting culture. Even if you have never been there, you probably have heard a lot about this wonderful place in the Caribbean, just a few hours away by yacht from the harbors of Florida.
The Bahamas is a 100,000-square mile archipelago consisting of some 700 islands that line up along more than 500 miles of crystal clear seawater (some say the clearest in the world). You have to see it and judge it for yourself, of course, but you will not be disappointed. Scuba divers will delight in the fact that the Bahamas has the world's third longest barrier reef where close to 15% of the world's coral may be found and, as a result, a wide variety of underwater denizens may be found for their viewing pleasure.
For the adventurer, there are islands that are largely uninhabited that encircle the fourteen main islands that just beckon for a visit and discovery of its untamed beauty. Of course, for the "regular" visitors who still need their air conditioning and cable TV, there are several vacations spots much closer to civilization so that they can "get away from it all" without really getting away from it all.
The Bahamas has a year-long tropical to subtropical weather so any time is a good time to visit from a climate perspective. This is why Bahamas is called the "Isles of June" because of its great weather all year round with a 24-29degC temperature in both winter and summer.
Let's talk about how to make the most of your vacation regardless of which season you plan to go.
The peak season is somewhere mid-December to mid-April. During this winter season, many tourists from the much colder countries escape to the islands. Being peak season, hotels will be crowded so make sure you make your reservations at least 3 months in advance. And you need to book much more in advance if you plan to go there on Christmas time. But I guess, it's worth the investment if you come from the cold regions. Bahamas will definitely be your paradise.
Mid-April to mid-December is considered "off season". The winds are favorable during these months and expect a cold breeze in the early morning and evening. The temperature will be comfortable enough even on non-air-conditioned accommodations. The accommodations and packages are cheaper around this time (expect a good discount offer) so it's the best season to go for cost conscious travelers or for those traveling in groups. The hotels will be less crowded and you will have more quality, private time with your whole family.
March to mid-April on the other hand is the spring break. Expect a lot of vacationing students. It's a good time to go for young adults, as there will be lots of partying and sports events.
I have to note that June to November is a hurricane season. Most travelers are not really bothered but it will be good to check the weather forecast if you are planning to go during this time. With the advanced technology, the satellite forecasts are pretty accurate and adequate warning is given to the public incase of any danger.
I guess, if you want to escape from cold winter, then December to April is the season for you. If you are traveling as a group and wanting to have private moments with the whole family, then you might as well go during April to December where you can also avail of huge discounts. And if you prefer to party, spring will be a good alternative.

What is the best Caribbean Island for late December travel?
Would love a winter vacation in the Caribbean and can't decide which island to go to - I want one that isn't rainy and cold in December (I want to swim and lie in the sand) AND has reasonable prices!! Aruba is great, I know, but, it's a bit pricey for us!
I'm looking for an inexpensive island that has tons of sun in Decmeber - I don't want to be rained on! When answering, can you let me know why you think it'll be great in December. Thanks!
Definitely Barbados. I've been there in December 2004, and it was sun, sun, sun.
Trust me, it was paradise, escaping from the cold where I live, and I was able to enjoy the warmth!
Try comparing prices online and from travel agency to another, and do this until you find a fare that's a lot cheaper than most, then you grab it. For cheapest accommodation, and you don't care about luxury, but at least clean, then try Pegwell Inn Guest House.
This guesthouse is close to amenities, beaches, even of walking distance to fast food restaurants, especially post office, and there's public transportation right near that place - you could take a big bus into its capital, Bridgetown or even further Speightstown!
Hope this helps.

Apple Vacations Has It All!

It's said you can drive around New Zealand in a fast car for eight or nine days and still see no more of the country's main centres and key tourist attractions than a cruise ship passenger would.
Even then you'd have to drive pretty well all night, every night.
It's because the itineraries of cruises to New Zealand from Sydney or Melbourne incorporate visits to more cities and other places of interest than cruises to just about any other single destination in the world.
In a little over a week, or just half of the total cruise, your ship will take you to eight major cities and scenic attractions at a rate of one new location every day.
Even the world's most popular ocean cruising destinations, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, can't top that.
A week-long Mediterranean sailing will usually feature five or six ports. Even fewer with Caribbean sailings of similar duration.
Only voyages along the coast of Norway, where passenger vessels deliver mail and supplies to 30-odd towns and settlements over a distance of some 1900km, offer a greater line-up of ports.
Whether by design or accident, New Zealand cruise ports and scenic attractions are spaced almost evenly along some 1200km of mostly eastern coastline, enabling them to be linked comfortably by overnight sailings.
Between the nation's No.1 natural wonder, Milford Sound near the bottom of the South Island, and the spectacularly scenic Bay of Islands at the top of the North, ships carrying 2000 or more tourists weave their way along the western edge of the South Pacific in a steady stream from October to March.
Pretty well all itineraries include calls at Dunedin (a city making much of its Scottish heritage), Christchurch (said to be the most English city outside England), Wellington (where brightly-painted timber house cling to hillsides steeper than San Francisco's), Napier (which recovered from a devastating 1931 earthquake to become a world-famous art-deco city), Tauranga (gateway to the geyers and boiling mudpools of Rotorua, the centre of Maori culture) and Auckland (the nation's biggest city and the biggest Polynesian city in the world).
Occasionally there are additions, like Stewart Island, off the bottom of the South Island. Holland America Line's 1450-passenger Volendam called there in the last days of 2009, stretching to the limit the resources of an island which has just 400 residents.
Australian cruise industry data shows that more than 195,000 Aussies cruised to New Zealand and the islands of the South Pacific in 2008. The figure is 22% up on 2007 and represents 60% of the total number of Australians who took a cruise that year.
Figures for 2009 are expected to show an even healthier rise because of an increase in the number of ships and more departures from Melbourne.
Travel agents say the Tasman sailings are popular with first-time cruisers because they see New Zealand as familiar territory, shipboard life is geared to Australian tastes and there's no language problem.
Seasoned travellers also make up a fair percentage of passengers, many of them attracted by the fact that they don't need to fly internationally to board a ship, regardless of where it's headed.
Counting the round-trip Tasman crossing from Sydney or Melbourne, cruises vary in length from 12 to 14 nights. There are also fly-cruise options which allow Australians to fly to Auckland and cruise home, or cruise to Auckland and fly home. Fares for both options start at around $2500 to $3000 a person.

Majesty of the Seas Cruise March 1st-5th 2010! L@@K
Fiji loves honeymooners which prompted a travel magazine to call Fiji "Honeymoon Heaven." Last summer, Forbes.com ranked Fiji among the lowest-priced countries for American travelers. If you are planning a honeymoon, anniversary celebration or vow renewal consider one of these three heavenly resorts.
Likuliku Lagoon Resort won, Best Overseas Resort, in Australia's Luxury Travel Magazine's annual 2010 Gold List with good reason. It was the first resort in Fiji with over-water bures (bungalows.) All 46 of Likuliku's thatched-roof bures feature lagoon views, but 10 of them are suspended over the Lagoon's reef edge. They are private, exclusive and beautiful. You can laze on your deck or luxuriate in your separate bathing pavilion with Lagoon views from your bathtub.
Although its most popular features are overwater bures, another good choice is a deluxe pool bure, right by the beach. There are only eighteen of these private sanctuaries on the beachfront, They feature air-conditioning, music systems, phones, flat-screen monitors and DVD player, secluded rear courtyard, outdoor shower, spacious deck, daybed retreat and personal plunge pool. They are surrounded by glossy-leafed greenery and brightly flowering hedges.
Likuliku Resort is also heralded for serving exquisite food, some say the best in the country. It could be so easy to stay cocooned in your romantic hideaway, and leave the drama of the world behind.
Likuliku is on Malolo Island in the Mamanuca group, within easy access of Port Denarau (a short drive from Nadi airport.) The resort has designed two very special wedding packages and a "renewal of vows" package to suit all needs. And certain times of the year, weddings are free. Rates range from $734 to $1233.
The Royal Davui Island Resort allows for no more than 32 guests on the island at any one time. Conde Naste magazine crowned them the most romantic island hideaway in the South Pacific and Caribbean. Set on a hillside, it has wonderful views of Fiji's finest lagoon. This is an adults-only, all-inclusive hotel and each room features a private plunge pool. If you want to elope, they are offering a free wedding package until March, 2011.
The Qamea Resort & Spa was selected as one of the top 10 hideaway resorts in the world by the Robb Report. This idyllic resort location is surrounded by jungle clad hills and white sand beaches. It recently opened the Qamea Jungle Spa which is perched on a cliff at the edge of the jungle. One of the resorts most unique features is the option to reserve a romantic afternoon on honeymoon beach-a totally private beach. They will whisk you away by ferry, supply you with a picnic lunch and bottle of wine and leave you totally alone on the island until you are ready to be picked up. You will possibly come back more in love than when you arrived at the resort.

DR - School

My love of stringed instruments started over 40 years ago. I was first introduced to the sweet mellow sound of a baritone ukulele. Within 30 minutes, I was taught my first song consisting of 3 basic chords, G, C, D7.......it was "Catalina Island". After several months, I longed for a more full sound so I began a lifelong search for the best sounding acoustic guitar.
Simon & Garfunkel, Mama's & Poppas, Peter, Paul & Mary, Bob Dylan and Arlo Gutherie were shaping my taste in music at that time. Before long, I fell in love with the acoustic rock and harmonies of Buffalo Springfield, The Eagles, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
My journey took me through the following brands.....Kay(western style w/F style sound holes),Gibson, Martin D 28,Ovation, Alvarez Yairi DY 90, Takaminie cutaway, Guild, Yamaha Classic, Taylor, and Martin HD 35.
All of these guitars had a special place in my heart, because like a good friend, they gave me pleasure on my musical journey. I even had the privilege of playing a friend's HD-35 12 string for about a year. It was after this time that I started narrowing my search for just the right sound for my ear. Guitars can be very subjective because of the playability, tone and sound and even the volume.
After spending months playing the best handmade guitars, I settled on the guitar that I don't ever want to part with. It's like finding the woman of your dreams that you want to spend the rest of your life with. When you embrace her you never want to let her go. When you hear her voice, you know it immediately and it soothes you. She inspires you and comforts you.
So for me, it's the Martin D-35 acoustic guitar. The 3 piece bracing and back gives this guitar its full rich base notes but none of the higher notes suffer in the mix. The back and sides are made of Indian rosewood and a spruce top. The Martin acoustic is not fancy to look at but to me it leads all others in sound.
It is no wonder that Martin acoustic guitars are chosen by the majority of professional musicians throughout all genres of music for acoustic sound and quality.
If I'm to own just one acoustic guitar, it will be a Martin.
Well, I think its time to start playing....
I wish you the best on the search for your Martin.....enjoy!

Caribbean Islands--which one should I go to after a friend's wedding in the Dominican?
Hello! I have never been to the Caribbean, and I have the opportunity to go to the Dominican for four days in October. The hubs and I are looking to add on four more days somewhere else....so preferably somewhere not too far from the Dominican so we're not wasting too much time flying here and there.
I would love to see some white sand beaches. He will want to scuba dive and I probably will too. Any place you know of with a cozy, charming, kinda unique B&B that's right on the beach? We're NOT looking for a mega-resort.
Thanks for any suggestions!! : )
Bonaire has some wonderful scuba diving (or so I've heard). The waters all around the island are protected. I don't know how easy it would be to travel from DR to Bonaire, though. http://www.infobonaire.com/scubadiving.html
Also, Bonaire is out of the hurricane belt so that's one less thing to worry about. =)

Nice choice enjoyed my stay there as well.I am a frequent to the Caribbean.Headed there in under 30 days no better place to be to fall in love again for Valentine's Day than where you got married. My Favorite is Hedonism 3 Jamaica.(Don't tell anyone hehehe)But hubby books through our local agent we've had for years but we get discounts well never asked but for your question this is straight out answer.I know the time of travel does matter on price resort and/or airfare but in June to July 08 stay 7 night 8 day we paid close to 2,400.00 for total trip land, air, transfer.Just wondering how much have you paid in the past.
