Which English is Best?

With English continuing to develop as a principal world language, a question which often arises among EFL learners is, "Which English is best?" It can be confusing to new learners of all ages as to which one of the "Englishes" should be learned or studied. While the answer to this may depend on your needs and location, one consideration is the many varieties of English that exist and a re spoken world wide.

Here are Seven of the Most Distinctive Varieties of English

o American English

This category of English actually consists of several variations. There are recognizable variations in the spoken English of the South, the Pennsylvania Dutch, the New England region of the U.S., the Midwestern U.S. and the West coast. There is also "Black English" spoken as a distinct racial community variety of English across the USA.

o Black English

You won't have to go very far to hear this distinctive variety of English. Try the latest Rap or Hip Hop offerings or listen to interviews with black artists for the unique flair this English variety has. Grammar, lexis, idioms, expressions and vocabulary are all impacted by this and other varieties of English.

o British English

The origin of English proper, there are "common" variations of English spoken throughout the UK. The "Upper Crust" as it were, used a particular variety of spoken English known as RP or "Received Pronunciation". RP is what the royal family and those educated at Oxford, Cambridge and other high-level universities were taught to use and speak.

o Australian English

No question here, Steve Irwin popularized Australia's unique wildlife in a way like no other before his untimely, accidental death in 2006. Another character who brought Australian English to the forefront of public knowledge was "Crocodile Dundee" in a movie series bearing the same name.

o Jamaican English

Spoken English in Jamaica has always been an interesting variety for the many travelers, vacationers and visitors to this island. It's also used in movies, documentaries and films set in Jamaica. Singer Bob Marley also contributed not only his music, but interest in the culture and spoken English variety of Jamaica as have a number of other Reggae music artists.

o English Spoken in India

A distinctive variety of spoken English is used in India. The language is taught and applied there as a sort of "lingua franca", since there are hundreds of regionally and locally spoken languages and dialects across the Indian continent. Hundreds of movies, documentaries and other media are readily available in this variety of English.

o Varieties of Pidgins and Patois Spoken in a Number of Locations

There are unique, local or regional varieties of English spoken in a number of countries world wide. Places like Belize, the Philippines, several West Indies (Caribbean) islands like Barbados, Trinidad, the Cayman Islands and both the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Guyana (formerly British) in South America and African countries where English is widely spoken, each have their own particular brand of spoken English.

English Language Needs and Location

The question, "which English is best?" usually depends on the needs and location of the EFL learner, especially when one considers the many varieties of English that exist and that are spoken world wide.

who are Latinos, is it the people who speak spanish or live in Caribbeans islands. or below north America.?

Ok, my friend and I are arguing that Jamaicans are Latinos. is that true. who are Latinos, is it the people who speak spanish or live in Caribbeans islands. or below north America.

Though often used interchangeably in American English, Hispanic and Latino are not identical terms, and in certain contexts the choice between them can be significant. Hispanic, from the Latin word for "Spain," has the broader reference, potentially encompassing all Spanish-speaking peoples and emphasizing the common denominator of language among communities that sometimes have little else in common. Latino, in Spanish means "Latin" and as an English word refers more exclusively to persons or communities of Latin American origin. Of the two, only Hispanic can be used in referring to Spain and its history and culture; a native of Spain residing in the United States is a Hispanic, not a Latino. Spanish-speaking people from Caribbean islands such as Puerto Rico or Cuba can be referred to both as Hispanic and Latino.

Although Royal Caribbean is often considered to be a strictly Caribbean cruise line, this is definitely not the case. Royal Caribbean offers far more destinations of travel than simply the islands of the Caribbean and Alaska is included within this list. For anyone looking to breathe fresh air, stare out at endless mountains and watch wildlife survive and thrive within their own environment, there is no better destination than Alaska.

On the Royal Caribbean website you will find everything you need to help you prepare for your Alaskan cruise. You can find detailed information and deck plans of their two ships that currently cruise to and from Alaska, Radiance of the Seas and Rhapsody of the Seas. Both are approximately the same size, holding a maximum of about 2,500 passengers, but each offers different amenities. It is worth spending some time examining what each ship offers in order to make an informed choice.

What to pack is one of the most common questions associated with an Alaskan cruise and Royal Caribbean has answered this for you. They recommend casual wear for during the day and on excursions but this casual wear needs to be warm. Although you are traveling during the spring months of the year, in Alaska it will feel like a brisk winter day. Be sure to include warm sweaters, jackets and thick socks to keep you warm and comfortable enough to enjoy the sites.

The most popular city of interest for a Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise is the city of Juneau. It is often said that Juneau is one of the most majestic and scenic cities within America today and this is all that needs to be said to spark the interest of travelers. The other highlight of this Alaska cruise is the Hubbard Glacier which is one of the most active glaciers in the world. It is a 1,350-foot Alaskan natural wonder that is both breathtaking as it is incomparable.

If you are looking for a bit more adventure within your Royal Caribbean Alaska cruise, there is plenty to choose from. Just outside of Juneau is one of the most popular shore excursion adventures Royal Caribbean offers. Here you can actually hike through glacier waterfalls and rain forests and enjoy scenery that can be seen nowhere else in the world. If you are looking for more you also have the option to take a helicopter ride above the ice fields of Juneau and see what only the birds have the privilege to view.

During the warmer months of the year, you can engage in a high speed catamaran ride to see wildlife in their natural habitat. This can be done preferably during July and August for best weather. The Royal Caribbean also offers 19 different cruise tours which is a combination of your cruise passage and an expert guided land tour of Alaska. These combine what many people are searching for within their cruise experience and can be viewed on the Royal Caribbean website to find the exact combination you are looking for.

Plan, research and book your entire Alaska cruise through the Royal Caribbean website. They tell you how to choose the right duration, the right departure city and of course the proper room accommodations. There is little they do not allow you to choose yourself and even less they do not assist you with through this process. Although it does take time to organize an Alaska cruise, it is almost as much fun planning it as being there.

Cruise Vacation 101--Part 4

caribbean sailing holidays

caribbean sailing holidays

The Caribbean is one of the world's favorite cruise destinations and there is always a rush to book suitable vacation packages. The most popular cruise times are Christmas, just after Easter, and the summertime. Planning a vacation several months ahead and getting suitable bookings done early enough would be a wise move. Early bookings often get competitive rates.

It is always good to gather some general information about a proposed vacation destination. Cruise liners offer their best rates during the months of January, May, September, October, November and first two weeks of December. If you want a smooth sailing experience, then June is the month to plan your vacation in as the Caribbean sees the smoothest seas in June. February is the month for the roughest seas and is best avoided. The general forecast for the Caribbean is that the most likely time for hurricanes is in the month of September.

All inclusive Caribbean cruises are a wonderful way to unwind and relax. All inclusive is a concept that refers to all the expenses of the vacation paid in a lump sum usually upfront. Once this is done one can just sit back and relax, without having to worry about paying for each and every thing.

Your all inclusive Caribbean cruises could be a Western Caribbean cruise starting from Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, or Port Canaveral and going on to New Orleans or Galveston, and sometimes Baltimore and Charleston. Typical ports of call on this route are Jamaica, Cayman Islands, Cozumel, Costa Maya, Cancun (Calica), Belize, and Key West.

The other route is an Eastern Caribbean route where the ports of call would include San Juan, St. Thomas, St. Maartin, Nassau, or Labadee. Many cruise lines have access to private islands. These islands are used for barbecues and water activities. An all inclusive cruise would entitle you to the use of all on-board amenities.

If the cruise is along a Southern Caribbean route then the ports of call would include Aruba, Curacao, Barbados, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, St. Johns (Antigua), St. Thomas, St. Maarten, Martinique, Caracas (Venezuela), Dominica, Guadeloupe, Catalina Island (Dominican Republic), Grenada, St. Croix, St. Barts, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda.

Is it always really expensive to go to the Caribbean?

I would like to go to Barbados/ The Bahamas for my holiday next year. Which of the two would you recommend, i am looking for family activities, 2 adults and a 14 year old boy. We would like a nice place to stay, thats not particularly expensive, for two weeks. Things to do would be surfing, sailing, diving...and also some gorgeous beaches. Can anyone help? Thankyou

I find that trips to the Caribbean cost no more and sometimes less that a week in Florida. Do your homework and use a Internet travel companys like CheapCaribbean.com, Apple, Funjet, Travelocity, expedia ect. Last March I spent $1350.00 for 6 nights at the 4 star Del Mar Resort in Puerto Rico for 2 including Air from Kansas City. $1600.00 for 2 to Grand Cayman in July. Not pocket change but compare it too trips at a nice resort in the states.

There is something for everyone on a cruise, with hardly any possibility of getting bored during your stay. There is also the added advantage of not having to take the headache of planning how and when to travel, that one has to take when going for a conventional holiday. Everything is taken care of by the cruise company and you can have a relaxing and peaceful holiday full of fun that is sure to leave you refreshed and rejuvenated once you return home.

There are many important factors to consider while choosing the kind of cruise ship in which you want to book seats. The pricing of different companies offering cruise holidays can vary depending upon the facilities available on board. Luxury cruises can be quite highly priced while cruises offering basic bunkers and limited entertainment can be in an affordable price range. So, before making a booking, the following guidelines must be kept in mind so that you choose the cruise that is best suitable for you and your family.

Destination: The first and most important step while booking a cruise is choosing the destination. There are many cruises that stop at a number of destinations on their course. A combination of places that are to the liking of every member of the family must be chosen to keep everyone happy. The destination should be chosen keeping in mind the weather prevailing over the waters of a particular ocean where the cruise ship's route is mapped out. One can surf the internet and thoroughly research all the possible places that different cruise ship companies offer to take the travellers. Detailed and extensive pictures can also be examined online before deciding where you want to go.

Duration: The duration of the cruise that you are booking is also of extreme importance. First, you need to determine how much time you are willing to devote to a holiday. According to this, you can either travel on cruises that last for a few days to those lasting a few months. Your budget can also be the deciding factor in this case, as longer cruises cost more than cruises of a shorter duration.

Cost: The pricing of different cruise ship companies must be found out and compared to ensure that you are getting the best deal. The quality of the features and facilities on board should be considered in order to determine whether it is worth the money you are paying for it. In order to bring down the costs of tickets, one can forego the participation in a few activities and choose only a few according to preferences. This can considerably lower the cost of your tickets enabling you to travel on a luxury cruise without having to spend all that much.

Requisite Information: The cruise companies or travel agents should be contacted depending on how you are planning to make the booking. Information about the rules, regulations and terms and conditions regarding the sale of your tickets and your stay on board must be obtained. There must be clarity and transparency during this step so that there are no complications later on.

Final Booking: When you have taken a decision regarding all the above mentioned factors, it is time to make the actual booking. Bookings can be made either through travel agents or directly with the company online depending upon your convenience.

What can we use for spending money in Europe?

Hello all, in three days my family and I will be leaving for Venice, Italy. Then we will be heading out for a 7 night Royal Caribbean cruise on the Eastern Mediterranean. Our stops include Dubrovnik, Croatia; Kusadasi (Ephesus), Turkey; Corfu, Greece; and Santorini, Greece.
We've been told that American money is of no value in Europe, so what can we use as spending money over there, and is it possible to do currency exchange in any of these places?

You can do currency exchanges pretty much everywhere in Europe, just go to a local bank :-) All the big airports should also have currency exchange booths :-) The Euro is the currency you'll use for spending money :-)
I hope this helps a little! :-)

I've visited Grand Cayman twice. Today is the fourth day of my second visit and I have yet to meet anyone actually from this small Caribbean country. The woman who gave me a pedicure this morning is from northern England; the hairdresser, from Georgia (I admit to a fair amount of pampering); our hired driver, from Jamaica; waiters from Tunisia and other distant lands, but none from Cayman, most not even from the Caribbean.

I live in Barbados, where Barbadians hold the majority of jobs at all levels of society. I've always felt that locals give a country a sense of place. If not for locals, I figure I may as well be in an airport, easily the most place-less places on earth.

However, after snorkeling the pristine Caribbean waters of Cayman, I really couldn't hold this place-less-ness against Grand Cayman. Each Caribbean island holds a certain magic, including Grand Cayman.

After two visits spent snorkeling, dining on delicious seafood, and walking the gorgeous and famed Seven Mile Beach, I take away the following knowledge and impressions of this small, English-speaking island:

About Grand Cayman

1. Grand Cayman offers some of the world's premier snorkeling and SCUBA locations. The draw? The graceful stingrays, sunken ships from its pirate days, and beautiful coral. The beaches are pristine and the Caribbean Sea are a pretty light blue, warm, very gentle, and as clear as a glass of water.

2. Grand Cayman is a fantastic place to do absolutely nothing. Hotels line the soft white sand of Seven Mile Beach. Five minutes on this beach and I enter lazy mode; on one day of my holiday, my greatest exertion was holding my hand out to take my next iced beverage from the waiter.

3. Grand Cayman is about 22 miles long and 4 to 8 miles wide and at sea level; like Barbados it is a coral island, not volcanic. My first impression was that it's a sandbar, so different from the varied geography of my home country of Barbados. The highest point on the island is the landfill.

4. Grand Cayman is the largest of the three islands comprising the Cayman Islands. The other two are Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

5. Cayman is located in the Western Caribbean Sea, about 400 miles south of Miami.  (In contrast, Barbados is in the Eastern Caribbean, about 1600 miles south and east of Miami.)

6. Cayman was first sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1503. He named the three islands Las Tortugas after the sea turtles. The name of Cayman, a Carib Indian word, came later, after a local species of crocodile.

7. Cayman never had slaves (unlike Barbados, which after 1650, imported thousands of African slaves to work the sugar cane fields).

8. Cayman and Jamaica were governed as a single British colony until 1962 when Cayman became designated a "British overseas territory," one of 14 territories under the sovereignty of the UK but not part of the UK and Jamaica became independent.  (Barbados, also once a British colony, is one of the 53 member states belonging to the British Commonwealth.)

9. The Cayman Islands have more registered businesses than people (population is around 60,000). The government's primary source of income is indirect taxation: there is no income tax or capital gains tax or corporation tax. Based on income, the Caymanians enjoy the highest standard of living in the Caribbean. Locals complain there's not much to do on the island; they tell me it's a more enjoyable place for tourists (and corporations!) than people who live there.

10. The Cayman Islands have the dubious honor of having experienced the most hurricane strikes in history. Hurricane Ivan almost completely destroyed the unprotected island in 2004; within two years, the Caymanians had rebuilt their country.

Going on a cruise is a wonderful vacation experience that you will never forget. One of the great things about most cruises is that nearly everything is taken care of; there is no need to worry about anything. Still, cruise travel can be quite different from normal travel and certain things need to be taken into consideration. One common cruise question is, "Do you need passports for cruises?"

The best indicator of the necessity of passports for a cruise is whether or not the cruise is international. In short, passports are needed for international travel and are not needed for domestic travel. Passports are never mandatory for domestic travel, but passport laws can vary for different types of international travel.

First, it is important to stay up to date on passport law. As of June 1st, 2009, passports are required for all border countries. This is applicable to air, land and sea travel. However, there are different laws that relate specifically to cruise ships.

Obviously, passports are required for any cruise that has an international final destination. This also applies to all border countries. For example, a passport would be necessary for a one-way cruise from Miami to Cancun, although round-trip cruises have different laws.

Additionally, any cruise that starts in another country would require the use of a passport. This should be pretty obvious because a cruise starting in another country often requires international air travel. There are never exceptions for the need of a passport when it comes to air travel. Passports are also now required for all border crossings, so a passport is necessary for any cruise departing from an international port.

Currently, many cruise lines offer what are called "closed loop voyages." Usually, a closed loop voyage refers to a cruise that starts and ends in the same port. However, in terms of the legal implications, a closed loop voyage can refer to any cruise that starts and ends in the same country. Closed loop voyages have a unique set of passport laws.

Passports are generally not required for closed loop cruises. In place of passports for cruises deemed closed loop, adult passengers are only required to bring a valid driver's license and birth certificate. Closed loop voyage passport and document exemption laws only pertain to travel from a U.S port to ports in Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, and select Caribbean Islands. Anyone unsure of the passport requirements for closed loop cruises to certain Caribbean Islands should consult with the cruise company, their travel agency or the State Department website. Anyone that has a passport would be wise to bring it along just in case.

You can go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards", then go to the "Roll Call" section. You will need to join CC to access that board, but it's free. People mostly go there to arrange a "meet & greet" on board [although I don't think RCCL does an official m&g] or to try and arrange a group to go on an independent tour.

Haiti, claimed by many to be the most beautiful of the Caribbean islands, is famous for its culture, its superstition, and its music. Superstition, or voodoo, plays a profound role in the lives of many Haitians. The country is also famous for its paintings and its ruins. Perhaps a lesser-known fact is the popularity of sport in Haiti. Football, or soccer, is the most popular sport of the country.

It became so in the 20th century. The national pastime is certainly the sport of soccer. It was in 1974 that Haiti qualified for the soccer world cup. Emmanuel Sanon was one of Haiti's most popular players, and played in the 1974 world cup He became famous for having played in more world cup qualifiers than any other Haitian, and is still revered by his fans. Another rich talent was Joseph Eduard, who started his career playing for the United States. He represented Haiti in 1953.

The golden age of Haitian football was from the mid 1960s to the early 1980s. Haiti emerged as one of the strongest teams, and developed sufficiently to the reach the final round for qualifying for 1970. They repeated the feat in 1974, and this time qualified for the 1974 world cup. Haiti reached the final rounds of the 1978 and 1982 qualifiers but failed to make the cut.

The years since then have marked the rapid decline of Haitian football. The unstable political situation in the country has caused a number of players to defect from the national team. In recent times, Haiti had once again been rising as a strong soccer power. But the earthquake in Haiti earlier this month has struck yet another blow to soccer in the country. The entire Haitian soccer federation, which had been in a meeting when the quake hit, has been killed.

the best caribbean island to live on

Of all the ways to retire early living aboard a sailboat is probably not on your radar.

Some think a sailboat is a pleasure craft you take out on Saturday. The rest of the time the boat sits at the dock...right?

Wrong...a cruising sailboat is a floating home, one my wife and I lived on for 8 years in the Caribbean. We cruised from Venezuela to the Virgin Islands, making stops at virtually every island in between. No we didn't get off at night and stay at motels. The cruising sailboat is fully equipped for "liveaboards".

Of all the ways to retire early, this was the most fun for us. What did we know about sailing?...close to zero. We were fascinated by the lifestyle, so doesn't let lack of knowledge stop you from trying this great way of living.

We spent less than $1,000 a month when we were on the boat. It actually seems like a lot when we think about it now.

We anchored off shore (20 to 100 yards is offshore), which is free. We usually went ashore daily by dinghy. We used public transportation (cost $0.07 to $1.00 max) or walked, we all need regular exercise, to go to the store, have lunch, etc.

Why is this one of the cheapest ways to retire early? Think about how little you need when your home floats. No heating AC, the sea breeze takes care of that. No clothing costs, we wore swimsuits and T shirts and cover-ups. No temptations to spend money unless the fishermen have fish or lobster to sell. We ate 90% of our meals on board, exception of Venezuela; a nice meal for 2 there with drinks cost less than $10, so we ate ashore more there.

I am not talking skimping either. Thanksgiving meant turkey or chicken with all the trimmings, cooked aboard, and usually shared with other cruisers.

It was also safe for us, we and the friends we made never had a problem with crime...we never felt uncomfortable on any island. Just use common sense like you would in the USA.

If you have never considered living aboard a sailboat to be one of the cheapest ways to retire early...think again. It was safe wonderful frugal fun for us...it can be for you as well.

Caribbean honeymoon advice?

My husband and I are trying to find a great honeymoon spot that won't break the bank. We'd really like a nice beach scene, whether in the states or Caribbean. We saw a resort called Sandals, but the cost is too high and with the reviews I've read spending that much money isn't something I want to risk with the possibility of a bad honeymoon. I saw another place called the breezes that has several places. For 4 days and 3 nights it would cost us $2000 and seems like an ok place. Anyone been to those places and could tell me about them? What building you stayed in, what did you have to pay for, etc. Can anyone recommend a place for about $2000, airfare included, and a mostly inclusive resort? Is there any place that's really nice in the states with the kind of scene the Caribbean can offer?
I would be flying from Houston, Texas.

You can get a great cruise for that money and you do not have to pay for anything that you do not need to. You did not say where you were coming from.
