caribbean islands crime

Your vacation to Aruba is only two months away and you're busy planning for your trip. While you are really looking forward to your trip there are some nagging questions for which you wish you had answers. Here are the most common questions we get based on feedback from our readers;

1. Can I use my cell phone in Aruba? In almost all cases the answer is yes. Aruba has good cell phone service across the island and your phone will work in most locations. Keep in mind that you may need to have your cell phone carrier in your home country enable your phone for international use. Here are a couple of key things to remember - using your cell phone in ANY country outside of your home country is normally very expensive and Aruba is no different. If you have a data plan for your phone and want to check your e-mail this is even more true. Be VERY careful when you use your phone for calling while in Aruba. We suggest turning your data service OFF while you are in Aruba. You can check your e-mail from your computer in your room or in one of the Internet Cafes in Aruba. It will be significantly cheaper!

2. Will my electrical appliances work in Aruba? If you are from North America the answer is yes - Aruba uses US-standard 110vac 60Hz electric service and outlets. Travelers from Europe will need the appropriate adapters for their appliances, computers, etc.

3. Is it easy to get around in Aruba? This certainly depends where you will be on the island but the answer in most cases is yes - very easy. Aruba's taxi service is very good - the Taxi drivers are courteous and they keep their cars in very good shape. If you are staying in the high-rise or low-rise hotel areas you will find a bus route that runs from the California Lighthouse to Oranjestad. The cost is very reasonable and the service is punctual. You'll feel comfortable taking the bus once you've experienced it your fist time.

4. Is there crime in Aruba? There are several Caribbean islands that have a difficult time with crime, fortunately crime in Aruba is minimal in comparison. Aruba's crime rate is low thanks in-part to the efforts of the government there to provide basic services to all citizens. This does not mean that you do not have to be careful however - always use caution and common sense when traveling on the island. In the evening, stay out of neighborhoods that are outside the normal tourist areas. Don't leave valuables alone on the beach while you are there - the beaches are open to all on the island and unattended valuables may not be safe.

5. What is the immigration and customs process when visiting Aruba? With the exception of key travel days getting into Aruba and out of Aruba is a very easy process. The airport has been expanded and resources provided by the government to keep delays at a minimum. When you get to Aruba you'll first need to go through Immigration. There is a form you must fill-out before entering the country. You will be given part of the form back to keep and present when you leave the country. After Immigration you'll pick-up your baggage if you've checked bags then go through Customs. In most cases you are welcomed and waved through with a smile.

Now you have some basic knowledge to prepare you for your trip to Aruba. It's a great country to visit and we're sure you'll have a wonderful time!

There are few more enjoyable ways to spend a vacation than by going on an ocean cruise to the islands of the Caribbean. There, you will be able to lose yourself in a sultry tropical paradise, where adventure awaits you in various scuba diving and snorkeling excursions, and relaxation abounds on luxurious white beaches and clear crystal waters.

Let us explore in words a few of the wonderful places you can visit in the Caribbean on an ocean cruise:

Jamaica is an amazing and fun place, not surprising as it is the birthplace of Bob Marley and the music known as reggae. You can visit the resorts of Montego Bay, famous for its clear waters and lovely beaches. It is a beautiful place, but do be careful--this city is also known for its high crime rate.

The Cayman Islands, near Jamaica, are a very popular cruise destination. There is great scuba diving to be experienced here, including dives at shipwrecks, and there is a famous snorkeling location--Stingray City--where tourists can go snorkeling with wild stingrays that have gotten so used to humans that they pose no threat. If you just want to while away time at a beach resort, then you can stay at the Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman.

The Dutch Antilles include the islands of Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao. Aruba is a great place to spend a winter vacation, as it has dry, sunny weather throughout the year. Bonaire is a great place to go scuba diving, being one of the top-rated locations for the sport. The island is surrounded by well-preserved coral reefs, and in fact the entire coastline has been designated a marine sanctuary, so that the ocean life remains very rich and diverse. Another popular tourist activity on Bonaire is flamingo watching.

The independent island nation of Barbados boasts one of the highest standards of living in the developing world. It is a place with many great resorts and tourist attractions, such as the unique Atlantis Submarine diving trip. There are also snorkeling expeditions that feature visits to shipwrecks and swimming with turtles. If you really love turtles, you can see more at the Barbados Wildlife Reserve, where you will see many large specimens, as well as many other types of animal and plant life.

There are a lot more great destinations to explore in the Caribbean. We have not even considered Bermuda, Cuba, or the Virgin Islands, among many, many others.

What is the best Caribbean Island to live on 6 mo. a year?

So, my husband and I just got back from our Honeymoon Cruise to the Caribbean and now we can't wait to go back!

We are in the food industry and would like to open a biz for tourists and travelers either food-cart, juice-cart or hand-made chocolate related. Does anyone have any ideas as to what island might be the nicest to set up shop? And the easiest to do biz on? Oh, and fairly affordable for housing?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just a note -
We visited on our Cruise....
San Juan, Puerto Rico (not a favorite of ours, kinda trashy)
St. Thomas (almost too commercialized but still nice)
St. Maarten/St. Martin (a fav of ours and Orient Beach is fun too!)
Labadee, Haiti (owned by Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines - not much there but absolutely beautiful)

Thanks!

Well Barbados is nice, try coming heree b4 u set up shop and see if you like us.

The Caribbean is known for its golden beaches and is certainly the main attraction for going on a holiday there. There are many islands to choose from; however, Barbados is the one that comes to most people's minds when you mention the Caribbean.

There is 70 square miles of beach to enjoy along a 21 mile stretch so it's never far to venture to get to the seaside. If it is beach you are after (there are many other things to do in Barbados or on the other islands) then it is all at your disposal. For such a luxury place there are NO private beaches, every metre is available to the public despite hotels placing themselves right next to the beach in order to give that perception. Therefore you can swim or sunbathe on any place you see fit.

With the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea both surrounding Barbados you have the choice of the calmer clear blue seas and white sands that are found featured on the typical postcards or if you want a more adrenaline filled adventure head to the east of the island where the crashing waves are filled with surfers.

However you came to the island, via plane or the increasing popular Caribbean cruise and stay holidays, you will find a holiday type to suit your nature. Diving is well catered for in the Caribbean with it being possible to obtain the PADI divers' qualification at all levels. Even if you don't go for the qualification, diving is something definitely worth experiencing with the beautiful coral reefs to take in and for the more experienced there are around 20 sites to explore.

There is plenty of seeing in the Caribbean so if you go with the Caribbean cruise and stay option ensure you give yourself enough time to fully enjoy the island.

What is the best caribbean destination for a young couple looking for snorkeling & a great beach?

We are looking for a great resort on a great island in the caribbean, all inclusive or not, for GREAT snorkeling, a great beach and relaxation. We are a young couple in our late 20's early 30's.

I've been to Bavaro Beach (Dominican Republic). It was pretty cool. Endless beaches and good snorkeling.
They also have a disco and fun things to do with your couple (contests and such).

It is said that the pineapple originated in the Caribbean Islands from a shipwreck. The pineapple carried by an ill-fated Spanish ship was washed ashore. It was carried onboard, because the Spanish explorers ate it to prevent scurvy - a disease that causes Vitamin C deficiency.

The pineapple upside down cake was first recognized in 1924, in a fund-raising cookbook and again in 1925 in a Gold Medal Flour ad. In 1936, Sears Roebuck added it to its catalog; making is a familiar staple of American culture.

A pineapple upside down cake begins with a layer of sweet pineapple that is syrupy and glazed in butter at the bottom of a heavy skillet. This is topped with a cake batter and baked. After baking, the creation is flipped over, producing a beautiful upside down pineapple cake.

The most popular batter used in a pineapple upside down cake is a buttermilk mixture. It can be baked in a skillet or a square cake pan. The cake pan tends to hold more fruit if it is square, and it is easier to flip the cake in a square pan.

Basic ingredients include pineapple rings, butter, maple syrup, and light brown sugar, pitted cherries. The cake is made with butter, sugar, eggs, buttermilk, maple syrup, vanilla extract, flour, salt, baking power, baking soda and cinnamon.

Believe it or not, the pineapple upside down cake is a favorite of many to serve on April Fools Day. Some serve this tasty treat with ice ream and/or whipped cream. Keep in mind that although pineapples are a favorite, the upside down cake can also be made with other fruits including pears, cherries, applies, etc. The cake is best enjoyed when it is served warm.

Have you considered taking a cruise vacation but just aren't sure if it would be right for you? With all the cruise lines available, all the cruise destinations, the range of prices, there is a cruise for just about everyone.

Do you commute to work every day, sitting in traffic for perhaps hours? Think about it, on a cruise you don't drive anywhere for 7, 10, 14 days or more. Now, even if you were on a bus tour with no driving yourself, you haul your luggage or at least pack and unpack it at each stop. On a cruise, you check your luggage when you check in and it magically appears in your cabin, stateroom, or suite. You unpack once, feeling at home for the duration of the cruise. The cruise staff will tell you when to place your bags outside your accommodations at the end of the cruise and, just a magically, your luggage will be waiting for you on shore at a designated pick-up point. Taking a cruise vacation frees you from some of the hassles of traveling.

If you take a driving vacation, there's always the question of where to stop to eat. All meals are included in the price of your cruise and great food is one of the main attractions of taking a cruise. Most contemporary cruises take into account the modern casual lifestyle and provide a variety of restaurants and snack bars on board. Typically, there is a varied and plentiful breakfast and lunch buffet similar to what you find in Las Vegas. Or you can eat breakfast or lunch in one of the ship's restaurants, ordering exactly what you want from the ample menu, prepared fresh for you. Restaurants are usually open for meals for extended hours and buffets are generally open all day and into the night. Have you heard of the midnight buffet available on some cruises?

Dinner is an important event on a cruise ship, a tradition dating back to the late 1800's when cruises were for royalty and the wealthy who expected elegant formal dinners. Again, in today's lifestyle the elegant dinner is optional, and for those who prefer to dine casually, the dinner buffet is available usually until 9 pm. Most cruise ships offer excellent cuisine, especially at dinner, in the main dining room or rooms plus offer meals at upscale specialty restaurants at additional cost. Cruise lines base much of their reputation on their food service, and terms such as "world class cuisine" and "gourmet meals" are combined with "impeccable service" to insure that the onboard dining experience is truly memorable. Many cruises still offer one or more optional formal dinners where ladies where long formal gowns or other evening dresses and gentlemen wear tuxedos or dark suits.

Once onboard your cruise vessel, there are activities 24 hours a day. Modern cruise ships boast state-of-the-art 700 plus seat theatres for quality shows and entertainment, all included in the cruise price. There is unique entertainment in the theatre every evening of the cruise. Most ships also have a number of themed bars, lounges, and discos with live entertainment that are open into the early morning hours. Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks are seldom included in the cruise price. Most ships also provide a casino that is open while the ship is in international waters.

If night life isn't your style, you can enjoy the onboard pool, spa, library, fitness center, and other amenities. Many cruises now offer instructional classes on a variety of topics during the day. If you have children on the cruise, there are usually play areas and programs geared to different age groups.

Did we forget about the cruise destination itself? Cruises typically stop at a different port of call each day or every other day, depending upon distances and sailing time between points of interest. You may stay aboard the ship all day or disembark at any stop. You are free to explore each destination on your own as long as you return to the ship by the designated time.

Also cruise lines offer a variety of shore excursions at additional cost. These adventures are geared toward the unique features of the destination. For example, Caribbean cruises offer snorkeling, diving or beach excursions while Alaskan cruises offer helicopter tours or dogsled trips. For the less adventuresome, normally there are bus tours or supervised shopping excursions in the local port. Everything, including meal stops, is prearranged. All you need to do is find the correct line onshore and an experienced guide handles the rest of your tour.

With all these great services available at a reasonable cost, why not take a cruise vacation?

I am traveling from Europe to Caribbean on a cruise soon. Shall i carry my professional flippers with me?

I have a big experience in snorkeling and i was told in the sea excursions they provide snorkeling equipment. What do you advise me as i don't like carrying extra weight.
If it was short travell i would'nt mind carrying my fins. But travelling from Europe to Miami using two plains i think is a bit of a fuss.

I believe if they're professional, they're called fins ;-)

I always take my own mask and snorkel and sometimes my fins. You can snorkel pretty well without fins if they provide only crummy ones, not so with a crummy mask or snorkel.

Enjoy your cruise!

Adventure Antigua - Xtreme

There are adventurous travelers and there are travelers who really enjoy being pampered more than a great adventure. I have vacationed the complete spectrum, I have pinched pennies while vacationing in Gatlinburg Tennessee and stayed in a very expensive vacation home with a private maid in Saint Jean de Luz, France. I will admit that the vacation home with a private maid was a nice way to experience France.

But, I am an adventurer at heart probably born from my days as a kid where I grabbed a fishing pole or net and waded creeks and ponds to see what was there. My favorite type of travel is where you see things up close and personal with exposure to the people, culture and wildlife. This might require you to hop on a rubber landing raft and land on a beach where no one lives or it might require you to reach down and pet a whale. Adventurers run between 8 and 98 years old generally.

Today's adventure takes you to The Sea Of Cortez in Mexico along the Baha Peninsula. Jacques Cousteau said that the Sea of Cortez was the "world's aquarium" and "Galapagos Of North America". Why would an explorer like Jacques Cousteau think so highly of The Sea Of Cortez?

It starts with a beautiful crystal blue sea which can show more than a dozen shades of color in one vista. The waters also support 900 species of beautiful fish which you can see snorkeling or with a glass bottom boat. There are 900 islands in this area, some are uncharted and require a rubber raft to land and explore.

You might consider it even more exciting that you could have the opportunity to swim face to face with wild sea lion pups who are very curious about you. Or, the highlight of this trip might be seeing Gray Whales which have migrated 6000 miles from Alaska to give birth to their young in the sheltered bays. This is where you could have the opportunity to pet a whale if you are lucky. This area is also the winter home of several other whales such as Humpbacks, Fins, Blues.

How do you reach this amazing area? There is a small cruise ship called The Spirit of Yorktown which holds 138 adventurers that visits these waters from late December through early March. This ship is manned by friendly and well trained experts in marine and mammal life in the area.

Here is what your itinerary could look like.

Day 1: Board the ship in Cabo San Lucas and cruise past El Arco and finisterra (land's end) in the sunset.

Day 2: Explore Isla Espiritu Santo near La Paz which has several plants and animals found nowhere else in the world including the blacktailed jack rabbit and antelope squirrel. You can take a land walk or swim, snorkel and kayak the beautiful waters.

Day 3: This day is spent viewing marine life up close. Gray Whales are predominate along the Baja's Pacific shore especially in early February through mid March. When they are available you will be transported to the shallow bays in hopes of seeing baby and parent Gray Whales very close. Remember, you could be lucky enough to pet one. You can also see Humpback whales, minke, fin, blue whales and bottlenose dolphin this day.

Day 4: Visit one of the most beautiful islands of the Sea of Cortes. You can enjoy nature walks, kayaking and snorkeling in a beautiful, unspoiled place.

Day 5: Stroll the streets of Loreto, a beautiful seaside village. There will be a reception with musical entertainment at the Nuesta Senora de Loreto Mission.

Day 6: Today you will enjoy views of rare blue footed boobies on the cliffs of Los Islotes. If the weather is good you will be able to swim and snorkel face to face with sea lions. Later in the day you will go to Isla Partida where you can explore the shore, enjoy the beach or kayaking.

Day 7: The ship will be docked at LaPaz which was founded in the 1530s. Enjoy the shops and long waterfront. You can enjoy an exclusive fiesta with dancers, music and pinatas. Optional Scuba diving is also available here in one of the 10 best spots in the world.

Day 8: After breakfast you will disembark in Cabo San Lucas and head to the Los Cabos Airport. There is also an optional trip to the incredible Copper Canyon.

When you are visiting the Caribbean on one of your next vacations, you may start to wonder whether or not you should plan something perhaps a little more extravagant. Maybe you were first exposed to the Caribbean on one of your all inclusive family vacations when you were younger. Regardless, after witnessing all that the Caribbean islands have to offer, such as the beautiful beaches and fantastic weather, why not look into what other type of life events you may be able to plan outside of the traditional vacation. Maybe look into booking one of the top quality hotels for your most important business events, or take the opportunity to plan something even more significant - your wedding!

Caribbean vacations are just too good to take once and only to forget about and never to return. Planning an event such as your future wedding would be a terrific reason to return to the region and explore the landscape and lifestyles even more. And with a major event such as a wedding, not only will you and your loved one be able to return, but you can bring along your family and all of your closest friends! It is a great opportunity for all of your loved ones to bond and have fun, all while exploring the local activities and landmarks. It will be an event that no one will soon forget.

where to take vacation in souther caribbean that offers all inclusive hotels?

want to go around march. a friend suggested going to southern caribbean...i dont even know what places are there!

Then you need to do some research. Only you can decide what's right for you out of all the options. Your library or bookstore has books on vacationing in the Caribbean. There are websites for vacationing in the Caribbean in general or for each island. Get out a map [Google Earth is great - it even has street-level views for some locations!]

A source that I use anytime I'm planning a vacation is TripAdvisor.com. It has destination guides as well as a list of hotels and resorts, along with comments from past guests, so that you can weigh the different factors according to how important they are to you.

The Southern Caribbean is more-remote than the Eastern or Western, so it will be a bit more complicated to get there and probably more expensive. Barbados, St. Lucia, etc. are common destinations and they do have AI's.

You might consider a Caribbean cruise, but that, too, involves some research, as there are many, many options that you would need to choose from before you talk with a travel agent.

A travel agent will be able to help you book a vacation, once you know what you're looking for, either on land or at sea.

Better hurry, though. March is a big travel time for school breaks, Easter, etc.

This island was once the home for notorious pirates and buccaneers many years ago. This is where the treasure beach in Jamaica got its name. Today it is one of the popular destinations for visitors to the Caribbean and lies just a little over five hundred miles from the South of Florida.

With its unique scenic places with rugged mountainside, spectacular white sand beaches flanked by the blue green waters of the Caribbean Sea. This is an unmatched beauty that is always filled with visitors during the tourist season.

More and more, visitors are enticed to these magical shores from all over the globe to enjoy some of its world class conveniences. There is ease of entry to Jamaica as visitors can either come through the two major airports with international facilities, from the smaller airports, cruise ships, private yachts or arrange transportation for transfers from resorts or hotels. There is no hindrance to travel to Jamaica and you are welcome to stay for long periods.

There is time in the tourism sector when it is referred to as high season when most if not all the hotels are fully booked. This is the period from January to mid April and some persons will book rooms at the popular hotels from even a year in advance to secure there spot. It is very difficult to get rooms during this period, but remember that accommodation facilities are numerous on the island; you might not get what you plan for originally but you will find suitable lodgings.

During this time it is not only the rooms that will be in high demand, rental vehicles and sporting activities might be a little harder to get. However, there are lots of advantages to travel to the island at this time and that is why a lot of persons gravitate here. During the high season many persons welcome the change of weather from their homeland and get to enjoy some of the holiday offerings on the island.

This high demand also happens when it is the holiday period, with the numerous festivals and concerts the rooms are also fully booked. People always welcome the chance to experience the many festivals and celebrations that takes place this time of the year. There are numerous festivities to keep you entertained, such as the Carnival in the Easter week, jazz and blues festival and numerous yacht events. There are so much other activities in Treasure beach Jamaica.

There is more than enough for you to look forward to and very quickly you forget the drawbacks such as lack of hotel space, waiting list for sporting activities and overcrowded pools and beaches.

There is also the low season that is from the middle of April to December, also referred to as the summer season. This is the time when you miss most of the tropical climate or as some persons say, the sun is missing from the summer travel. This is not only reflected in Jamaica but throughout the other Caribbean islands as well.

During this time there are fewer crowds. If you travel during this season you will notice the changes in the hotel, both in the amount of visitors and the services. You might not feel the same vibe as you would in the high season, the features and services might not be in abundance and some places even close for short period of time.

It is advisable when making your reservation during this period to find out about renovations on property, as most places utilize this time to do some sprucing up.

Notwithstanding all that, this is still a popular tourist destination and you will be given the best of treatment. This is the time when most persons on budget will travel too as there is not the high demand and you might get discounts on a lot of services.

They even use this opportunity to enjoy some of the activities that you have to pay for such as diving, fishing, snorkeling, tours and any other fun activities that would be available. You might just indulge in some good shopping and get to take home more souvenirs for your friends and family.

Whatever the season, you will not regret a vacation in treasure beach in Jamaica, this tropical paradise where you will feel the welcomed, both from the people and nature's offerings.

What kind of boats are generally used for snorkeling trips in the Caribbean?

You know when you are on vacation in the Caribbean and different companies offer snorkeling trips? What types of boats are generally used to take people out on these trips? Are there public companies that run these businesses or are they small private companies that own just one boat?

They vary in size from Yacht size to small 18 footers,or Catamarans which are very fairly new in terms of boating luxury even though the techno, has been a round for some time, many of these operations are base in PR Virgin islands and a few other place were tours are offered like Cayman islands and Belize, all because of the abundance of reefs and its natural aquatic environ.
Many of these { boating } businesses are privately owned and operated if not by one person are a group of individuals in in the tourist trade through third parties who act behalf of a particular hotel chain.
None to my knowledge are indeed publicly owned either by stock exchange are Gov.
Even Cruise ships offer tours as for them am not sure if they are owned by share holder { which is highly possible}.

Just to give you an example take a look at these sites and see the variety of excursions, and also you'll notice that there boat varies.
