What is the best way to characterize the evolutionary changes that occur in a finch population over time?
Scientists have long believed that the 14 species of finches on the Galapagos Islands evolved from a single species of finch that migrated to the islands one to five million years ago (Lack, 1940). Recent research (Burns, et al. 2002) suggests that the original finches came from the Caribbean Islands. Different species live on different islands. For example, the medium ground finch and the cactus finch live on one island. The large cactus finch occupies another island. Among the major differences in finch species are their beak sizes and shapes as shown in Figure 1. Evolutionary changes occur by many processes, one of which is natural selection.
That's good, but I'd go into HOW and WHY the beaks differ (which really is the major difference). Consider the different diets, i.e. is the food underground?, on a tree? How would a difference in beak shape aid such feeding behaviours?
Good luck

Taking the 7 day caribbean carnival cruise. What off shore excursions are best?
I'm going to:San Juan, St. Thomas, Dominica, Barbados, St. Lucia, & st. kitts.
I was basically wondering, what off shore excursions were best for these islands, what was best to see at each place, and if its better to book "excursions" through the cruise ship or is it better to find things to do on my own? Please help!
Wow telling you how much your cruise will suck isn't very helpful is it? I personally love Carnival cruises. We need to know a little bit about you before we can know which one might interest you most. I read over all of them and then go to cruise critic to get reviews.
For me personally, I'm young (in 20s) and enjoy more athletic ones. The only ones that are truly horrible and should be avoided are Beach Breaks and Shopping Tours. Those are a complete waste of money. I really enjoy kayaking ones, and snuba, and snorkeling. Things like that.
San Juan- get out of the city. The city itself is super boring and not that easy to walk around. Take something like a kayaking tour or horseback riding on the beach. I stayed in the city for our last cruise (we left out of PR) and hated every second. The only thing worthwhile was Senor Frogs. But the island itself is gorgeous once you leave San Juan.
St Thomas- Best shopping. A great port to just wander around. Many things to do. I like to wander in and out of all the shops, buy some Tortuga Rum Cakes, and they have a chair ride up to the top or take a cab over to Meagan's Bay. My sister is getting married here next month.
Dominica- I hated this port and I thought Carnival had taken it off its itinerary. Personally I'd stay on the ship for this one and enjoy a cheaper rate at the spa.
Barbados- Honestly I could go there several times. So many of the shore excursions caught my interests. We did a rum tour there and that was a lot of fun but they also had some kayaking tours that sounded great. Gorgeous beaches.
St Lucia- No help here. I've never been there.
St Kitts is very natural, unspoiled and very few shore excursions. You might want to just wander around that day or even stay on the ship. I've done that at several ports and it was wonderful. It was like having your own private waiter and you are nearly the only one at the pool. Plus the spa is cheaper at days at port. Freeport, Costa Maya, and Half Moon Cay are ones that I usually book the spa at.
Many of the islands have stingray tours and that's definitely worth doing once. We swam with them, got a massage and even fed them. It was amazing though it took me a while to calm down and be ok with how close and strong they were. They are solid muscle.
The cruise ship excursions have their pros and cons. For example, at some not-so-safe ports (honduras, belize, etc) the actual port is not a place to just wander around. I've loved Belize--it's one of my favorite ports of call of any island. However, I've done some amazing shore excursions there. I went to Xunantunich and cave tubing. If you just wander around all you'd see is poverty. Many ports are like this. You want to plan something there. Look over all the ports and see if there is just one shore excursion that just DAMN catches your eye. Make that a definite and then go by your budget after that.
Pros of doing a cruise ship excursion- Carnival has guaranteed that these people are respectable and give a good tour. Getting off the dock and just picking someone is what leads to the horror stories where people fall off cliffs or get told the trip is one way and they must pay $50 to get back to the ship. It's rare but it happens. If something happens and for some reason you are late, the cruise ship will not leave you.
Cons- However it is really overpriced. Most islands, people on cruise critic have great suggestions. In Cozumel, I took a shore excursion to Chankanaab Park. Since then I've just taken a cab to the park and saved about $50. That was definitely the best snorkeling on the island. In Belize, I did the Xunantunich it could not have been more worth it. It was a 2hr bus ride in an air conditioned bus. There is no way I could have gotten there in a cab. The next time however I did my own through cavetubing.com. I did the same tour that Carnival did, an extra cave and half the price.
So it really depends on which things interest you. Most of the kayaking tours are worth it. Even if you knew where to go, you really can't cab and rent the kayak for much cheaper. However snorkeling tours you can usually save a ton of money. Buy your own gear for about $20 before you go and take a $10 cab to the beach of choice (or ask the cabbie for a suggestion). That will save you close to $70. Personally I can't believe you have a 7 day cruise to that many ports. Most only do 4.
Hope this helps you a little. Like I said, avoid any city tours, beach breaks, or shopping tours. Many of the rainforest hikes are amazing and you definitely would want a good guide to take you.
I want to know a good island (caribbean) to go on a vacation on.
I want a beautiful island that isnt to populated
with the pretty turquoise water
and nice diving and snorkeling.
A family vacation
(2 kids 15 and 17)

please help!
You should check out Culebra Island. This is a small island that is part of Puerto Rico. Flamenco beach in Culebra was rated as 1 of the top 10 beaches in the world by the travel channel. Its beautiful with powder white sand & crystal water. The island is not crowded at all. In fact there is no major development here. No chain hotels only guest houses & villas. There is great snorkelling & its not too close to the beach. You actually have to take a kayak out to get to te snorkel area. To get to this island you can take a ferry or small plane from Puerto Rico. No passprt for US citizens & USD currency as well. Check out some links I will provide for you below & you decide. GOODLK!
Oh & also on your way there you will probably stop in Fajardo (where the ferry leaves) & there you can visit 'El Yunque' rainforest & hike down to La Mina waterfalls & swim in it. Its so pure & beautiful. Also They have a bioluminescent bay in Fajardo where the water glows in the dark when you touch it. You can take a kayak tour out & swim in the amazing water!
